When Walter Smith began his football career as a young player for Dundee United he decided he should finish his apprenticeship as an electrician - in case things did not work out. This autobiography follows his career in football up to his record-breaking exploits as Rangers manager. The book covers his struggle to reach the top of Scottish football, the behind-the-scenes deals that brought top English players to Ibrox and his relationship with Graeme Souness. Smith talks about the stars he has worked with, who have brought success to the Glasgow club.
It’s been really interesting reading a lot of these football autobiographies from around 30 years and understanding some of the thoughts and predictions of the time.
This one by Walter Smith feels particularly poignant a year after his sad passing, a monumental loss for Scottish football which is still felt today.
This was written and published in the dying days of 1994 and tells the story (mainly chronologically, although the last couple of chapters drift off into thoughts of the man himself) of Walter’s beginnings and career to date. It’s interesting to see where he came from and what he went on to achieve, all mainly as a result of his strong character and fantastic understanding of the game.
