A Pearl Necklace

Rate this book
A Pearl Necklace is the compelling true story of Mi Xue's struggles and victories strung together throughout life, weaving sorrows and joys, fear and faith to create a beautiful Masterpiece of inspiration that shines like a precious jewel even throughout the darkest times. As a first generation Chinese American, Mi Xue strives to counter alienation with achievement only to discover the inadequacy of her own self-sufficiency to overcome the challenges of her failing marriage. She begins a lifelong search for a purpose and power greater than herself to transform the trials of marriage, three children in three and a half years, an autistic firstborn, job losses, dysfunctional codependency, family-career tug-of-wars, and over twenty relocations in three continents. Mi Xue reaches beyond the depths of her Chinese roots and the heights of the American dream to find her most profound identity and fulfillment beyond herself, connecting you with the lost wanderer yearning to return home in each of us.

Books written by people trying to convert everyone to Christianity are not my jam. (Not to mention the super scattered delivery.)

The author shared her story of how God has walked with her throughout her and her family's life. A top Stanford graduate married a young man from a troubled family. The young man has a habit of gambling and lost all their money during the honeymoon. You can't expect anything good would come out of this marriage. God is indeed a miracle worker. When she turned to God in her despair, God saved her, her husband, her mom, and her siblings. A pearl is made by using a sand or something hard and with God's grace. God made pearls in our lives by using hardship in our lives plus lots of grace to make pearls. It's amazing to read their story how her husband got this wonderful job from Goldman-Sachs in Hongkong but lost the job out of the blue. They had to sell their beautiful house against her will and only see the housing price rise up by five folds afterward. Their story is a good reminder of how fleeting our earthly wealth and success. Under curses from Adam and Eve's sin, life will always be a struggle. Are we willing to rely on God to make beautiful pears out of our struggles?

This is a wonderful book with a compelling testimony from Mi Xue. She shared many stories about her life from her childhood to college, singleness and married, career woman to becoming a stay at home mom, and from an agnostic to a Christian. I learned many life lessons and wisdom from reading this book. Since she and her husband Lee spoke at my church's winter retreat, I was interest in finding out about her faith journey and was delighted when my friend said she bought the book and was willing to let me borrow it. I was surprised at how captivating her stories are. Once I started reading it, I wasn't able to stop until I finished it in 2 weeks! Thankful for her obedience and love to God and her willingness to share so openly about her life in this book. I was surprised to find out that Lee smokes cigars like I was surprised to find out that Stephen Curry also smokes cigar. Highly recommend this book for anyone seeking to hear a very good testimony about God in a book format.

I've been wanting to read more (auto)biographies and this was unexpectedly the first one I got to! gifted to me by the author after I went to her talk and shared with her about my family :) her writing is captivating and makes me want to keep reading, her stories and her heart are so encouraging, and she discusses such a diversity of life issues in the lens of faith yet it didn't feel rushed! really enjoyed it and would recommend :)

She is a rock of faith. There was something to learn on every page in her memoir, about what it is to live as a Christian in this world.
