Αφού έκανα μια εβδομάδα υπομονή για να προμηθευτώ και τον δεύτερο τόμο του "Κάτω από τον Ήλιο του Μεσονυκτίου" -μιας και γενικά είμαι ανυπόμονος και δεν θα μπορούσα να περιμένω τόσες μέρες έχοντας διαβάσει το πρώτο μέρος και αγωνιώντας για τη συνέχεια-, έκατσα σήμερα το απόγευμα και απόλαυσα το κόμικ με την ησυχία μου. Είναι η δεύτερη ιστορία με ήρωα τον Κόρτο Μαλτέζε που διαβάζω, μετά το "Εκουατόρια" των ίδιων δημιουργών. Δεν ξέρω ακόμα πως είναι ο αυθεντικός Κόρτο Μαλτέζε (αν και φαντάζομαι με βάση τα υπόλοιπα κόμικ του Πρατ που έχω διαβάσει), αλλά όπως και να'χει δηλώνω εξαιρετικά ικανοποιημένος, τόσο από το σχέδιο όσο και από την ιστορία του... μη αυθεντικού. Γενικά απολαμβάνω όλες αυτές τις σκληρές περιπέτειες σε μέρη άγρια και απομονωμένα -ειδικά στα τέλη του 19ου αιώνα ή στις αρχές του 20ου (όπως εδώ), και ακόμα πιο ειδικά στις υπέροχες αυτές περιοχές της Βόρειας Αμερικής-, οπότε δύσκολα θα έμενα ανικανοποίητος από αυτό το κόμικ. Η ιστορία με κράτησε από την αρχή μέχρι το τέλος, χάρη στην όλη δράση, την ένταση και τους ενδιαφέροντες χαρακτήρες, ενώ το σχέδιο μου φάνηκε πάρα πολύ καλό, πιστεύω ότι κατάφερε να αποτυπώσει με ρεαλιστικό και φυσικό τρόπο τα άγρια τοπία του Μεγάλου Βορρά, ενώ επίσης κατάφερε να με ταξιδέψει σε τόπους μακρινούς και σε μια εποχή σκληρή αλλά συνάμα συναρπαστική. Τώρα, δεν μένει παρά να διαβάσω και τον αυθεντικό Κόρτο Μαλτέζε, δια χειρός Ούγκο Πρατ!

Corto without Hugo?
No. It was a mistake. 20 years after the Pratt's death, a new album was a bad idea.
First the drawing. Pratt fights with the paper. He crossed stuck. I remember an exhibition of the "salt sea ballad". There was the impression that Pratt played his life on each drawing. Here, it is well, but poetry do not operate.
The story? Jack London is requisitioned for the occasion. And it is oozing of good feelings. The bad guy is German. Corto does not want to seek oil in Alaska. These stereotypes prevented this album to be universal. Only emotion, the presence of Pandora at the end.
It is an error.

Como fan (pero FAN) de Corto Maltés pensé que este comic me iba a romper el corazón. Aunque fuera el guionista de Blacksad y aunque fuera Pellejero, dibujante de otro gran sosías de Corto: Dieter Lumpen. Pero es lindo equivocarse en esto: hay corazón y magia en esta nueva entrega de Corto, fiel a sus orígenes aventureros, haciendo lo que cree justo y conociendo personajes históricos que casi parecen inventados como Matthew Henson.

Corto Maltesen paluu on juuri oikeanlaista lyyristä melankoliaa

Corto Maltese on ehkä yksi tunnetuimpia eurooppalaisen sarjakuvan hahmoja. Corton isä Hugo Pratt kuoli 20 vuotta sitten ja moni uskoi myös Corto Maltesen tarinan päättyneen tähän. Toisin kuitenkin kävi.

Aiempien vastaavien kokemusten perusteella olen taipuvainen ajattelemaan, että moni selvästi kyvykäs sarjakuvataiteilija voisi luoda esimerkiksi omia sankareita ja tarinoita, ja jättää mestareiden luomukset rauhaan. Näillä ajatuksilla ja kriittisin silmälasein tartuin myös uuteen Corto Maltesen seikkailuun. Espanjalaiskaksikon piirtäjä Ruben Pellejeron ja käsikirjoittaja Juan Diaz Canalesin tänä keväänä julkaistu ja suomennettu uusi seikkailu Keskiyön auringon alla ei petä myöskään lukijaansa. Vaikka monista sarjakuvien klassikoista onkin tehty uusia versioita uusilla tekijöillä, lopputulos on harvoin yhtä miellyttävää kuin tässä albumissa. Tämän albumin myötä olen valmis ehkä hieman hellittämään näkemyksestäni, että monien tämänkaltaisten taideteosten soisi antaa levätä haudassaan tekijänsä vierellä.

Canales ja Pellejero ovat sisäistäneet Prattin rytmin ja löytäneet herkkyyden hänen kädenjäljelleen. Uusi Corto on uskollinen erityisesti varhaisemmille tarinoille, mikä on sinänsä onni, sillä Prattin myöhemmät Cortot alkoivat olla ainakin omaan makuuni hieman liian happoisia. Itse tarinakin sijoittuu ajallisesti Prattin ensimmäisen Corto Maltese -tarinan jälkeen vuoteen 1915. Lienee Canalesilta ja Pellejerolta myös taktinen ratkaisu lähettää sankari Alaskaan ja Yukoniin, missä alkuperäisten tarinoiden Corto ei ole käynyt. Varmasti helpompaa tehdä uusia polkuja uudelle mantereelle, kuin väistellä vanhojen tarinoiden juuria. Siitä huolimatta ja ehkä sen vuoksi, ratkaisu on hyvä.

Uudessa seikkailussa on joukko mielenkiintoisia sivuhenkilöitä ja aiemmista albumeista tuttu Rasputin näyttäytyy vain alkumetreillä. Henkilögalleriassa on toki oikeitakin henkilöitä mukana, kuten tämän blogin kannalta kiinnostava japanilainen feministipioneeri Waka Yamada (https://fr.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waka_...). Tälläkin tavalla tekijät osoittavat ymmärtäneensä Hugo Prattin maailmanmatkaajan luonteen.

Keskiyön auringon alla on visuaalisesti vakuuttava teos, etenkin luontoaiheet vangitsevat katsojan pitkäksi aikaa katselemaan kuvaa. Tarina on luonteva sekoitus vauhdikasta seikkailua ja Corto Malteseen sopivaa melankoliaa ja haikeita luopumisia. Myös tarinan suomennos on laadukas, mutta sen takana onkin myös aiemmat seikkailut suomentanut Heikki Kaukoranta. En tosin oman rajoittuneen kielitaitoni vuoksi lukenut alkuteosta Bajo el sol de medianoche, mutta vertailin suomennosta ranskan kieliseen Anne-Marie Ruizin ansiokkaaseen ranskannokseen, eikä suomennos jäänyt yhtään tämän toisen varjoon.

Tekijät ovat lupailleet seuraavaakin Corto Maltesen seikkailua lähivuosina. Tämän näytön perusteella saatan jopa hieman jäädä odottamaan sitä.

les fans de Corto seront contents de retrouver leur hero, dans un nouveau pays, le grand nord canadien avec ses aurores boreales et ses inuits, et une intrusion d'explorateur anglais a la recherche d'or noir. le graphisme est plus epure que du temps d'Hugo Pratt, plus lisible mais moins artistique, moins poetique, moins exotique. Corto a garde de sa superbe et son humour a froid, mais a perdu un peu de son air rebel et ses actes de gentleman voyou. On attend la suite ...

Recuerdo cuando se anunció que Corto Maltés sería continuado por otros autores. Estábamos en la Semana Negra de Gijón del 2015 y Juan Díaz Canales era uno de los invitados, justamente hablando de lo mismo que hablábamos todos: el desafío de encarar uno de los personajes más míticos que ha dado la historieta. Y recuerdo que ante un buen número de opiniones que veían tan solo una movida comercial editorial al retomar las aventuras del que quizá sea el mayor aventurero del mundo de la historieta, otros veíamos allí una genuina oportunidad, un interés sincero. Porque si me lo preguntaran a mí, yo no tengo duda. A mi me encantaría escribir una aventura del Corto Maltés, cómo no. ¿Y porqué entonces yo tendría que presuponer que Canales y Ruben Pellejero no compartían ese mismo entusiasmo? ¿Por qué no creer que iban a hacer vivir -y vivir ellos- una gran y nueva aventura al personaje? Y justamente Bajo el sol de medianoche es el álbum con el que ambos artistas recogen el testigo de manos de Hugo Pratt y más de 20 años después, traen de regreso al Corto Maltés. Y justamente, es una gran aventura sin duda alguna.
La acción se ubica sobre 1915. Luego de un pequeño prólogo en Nueva Orleans junto a Rasputín (¿quien, en su sano juicio, no incluiría de alguna manera al viejo Ras?) Corto se traslada al Yukón, Alaska, para cumplir con un favor que le pide su viejo amigo Jack London. Una vez allí, terminará -cómo siempre, nunca parece que del todo por su propia voluntad, siempre dejándose arrastrar por las circunstancias- en una aventura amores de juventud, ambiciosos sin criterio, algunos abnegados guías locales, traiciones, revolucionarios de verdad y de pacotilla y, quizá, incluso un tesoro. No cabe detallar todo porque el gran disfrute del libro está en leerlo e irse sorprendiendo con los numerosos giros que Díaz Canales le imprime a la trama, logrando sin duda alguna una aventura muy digna de Corto Maltés. ¿Acaso se le puede echar en falta que no arriesga demasiado y que entrega justamente eso, una aventura muy de Corto Maltés? Bueno, por lo pronto yo no esperaba otra cosa y salí muy satisfecho de su lectura.
El que se lleva todos los aplausos es, sin duda alguna, Pellejero. El autor de Dieter Lumpen (entre tantos otros) afronta medirse nada menos que con la pluma de Hugo Pratt y logra algo -a mi criterio- asombroso: emula a Pratt, sin duda, pero no deja nunca de ser Ruben Pellejero. Consigue una amalgama de estilo que demuestra claramente (por si hacía falta demostrarlo) que es un profesional capaz de enfrentar cualquier desafío, pero no deja nunca de ser un artista que aporta su impronta personal al arte del relato.
Se puede resumir, entonces, que ambos -guionista y dibujante- supeditan acaso algunas aristas propias en beneficio del personaje del que están contando la historia. Pero no se me ocurre mejor personaje que merezca tal cuidado, tal mimo -cariño a Pratt, a su universo, al Corto- cómo este. Hay varios libros más de la dupla con el personaje, yo me anoto desde ya a buscarlos.

La historia se cuenta muy rápido, tanto que a veces uno no sabe como llega a la siguiente escena. Las transiciones dejan bastante que desear. Corto Maltés tiene un par de frases con mucha fuerza, pero el resto un poco sin más. Se deja leer, pero si no lo lees tampoco te pierdes nada.

He tardado unos años en decidirme, pero al final les he dado la oportunidad a Canales y a Pellejero para que me convencieran con su versión de Corto. Lo han hecho. El espíritu viajero y aventurero sigue estando, el carácter independiente y burlón del protagonista también, la bipolaridad temible de Rasputín queda asimismo verificada al inicio del volumen y la aparición de personajes históricos interesantes se introduce del mismo modo que en los títulos clásicos de Pratt. Con este repaso lo que quiero es dejar bien claro que estos dos creadores españoles han sido sumamente respetuosos y concienciudos en su trabajo y que han sabido coger el testigo del autor original con fuerza, sin tropiezos.

De la trama prefiero contar poco, tan solo diré que está ambientada en San Francisco y en Alaska durante los sucesos que revolvían el mundo en 1915. Hay una misión romántica de por medio, la entrega de una carta, que sirve de excusa para un nuevo viaje trepidante. Lo que sí he notado viejo o usado son ciertos ecos o guiños al título 'Concierto en do menor para arpa y nitroglicerina' con el asunto de Irlanda y de los fenianos. Esto me ha resultado un poco repetitivo, me ha dejado una ligera sensación de deja vu, pero no llego a considerarlo un error o un punto flaco del cómic, simplemente es un contenido menos original que el resto que se ofrece en estas mismas páginas y ya está.

It took me a few years to decide, but in the end I gave Canales and Pellejero the opportunity to convince me with their version of Corto. They have done it. The traveling and adventurous spirit remains, the independent and mocking character of the protagonist remains, Rasputin's fearsome bipolarity is also verified at the beginning of the volume and the appearance of interesting historical figures is introduced in the same way as in Pratt's classic titles. With this review, what I want is to make it clear that these two Spanish creators have been extremely respectful and conscientious in their work and that they have known how to take the baton of the original author firmly, without setbacks.

I prefer to say little about the plot, I will only say that it is set in San Francisco and Alaska during the events that shook the world in 1915. There is a romantic mission involved, the delivery of a letter, which serves as an excuse for a new exciting trip. What I have noticed old or used are certain echoes or winks to the title 'Concerto in C minor for harp and nitroglycerin' with the matter of Ireland and the Fenians. This seemed a little repetitive to me, it left me with a slight feeling of deja vu, but I don't consider it an error or a weak point of the comic, it is simply less original as a content than the rest offered on these same pages and that's it.

¿Se puede hacer un cómic de Hugo Pratt sin Hugo Pratt? Al parecer si! Canales y Pellejero sí pueden.

Sigue la continuidad de Pratt y da una nueva aventura en ese mismo universo.

El dibujo es igual o incluso mejor que Pratt, sin embargo hay algunas desiciones que no entiendo en la narrativa (detalles sin importancia, la verdad). Pero si me dijeran que lo dibujó Pratt, lo creería.

El guión es algo similar, muy parecido a lo narrado por Hugo pero también con sus fallas y clichés. Cosas que pasan porque sí y momentos asombrosos que se resuelven sin mucha complicación.

El inicio y el final evocan esa aventura que caracteriza a los comics de Corto Maltés. No puedes creer que deje a Rasputín quemarse vivo o que no quiera entrar a ver a Pandora. Quieres gritar a Corto: ¡Haz esto o aquello!

¿Capta la esencia de Corto Maltés? Claro que sí. Es un digno heredero, ojalá pueda leer pronto el ambientado en México.

Aunque sigue el trabajo de Pratt como uno más de sus álbumes (supongo, que mejor halago no puede haber), prefiero el remake con Bastien Vives que revive la esencia con un Corto en nuestro tiempo.

I view the new albums as a kind of fanfiction. There are many of the ingredients of Pratt's stories, but there is something missing. They don't get it exactly right, but it's close enough to be an enjoyable read.
If Corto Maltese was a historical person, he would be the kind of person people tell rumours about, and it would be hard to tell fact from fiction. And if Hugo Pratt was Corto's biographer, the new albums would retell the kind of stories old sailors might tell you for the price of a drink. Decades after they last met Corto. Stories filtered through a failing memory, artistic licence and lots of alcohol.
There are plenty of unnecessary sequels/prequels today, and continuing the story of Corto Maltese obviously wasn't necessary either. But even though it might be a cash grab (like so many other sequels), considering the kind of character Corto is, it still makes sense to write these stories. You just have to view them as Apocrypha to Hugo Pratt's canonical stories.
I mean, don't you think people not being sure where the line between 'fact' and fiction is, would amuse Corto?

Vuonna 2015, kaksikymmentä vuotta Hugo Prattin kuoleman jälkeen, Corto Maltesen tarina sai jatkoa. Tekijöinä ovat espanjalaiset Juan Díaz Canales (s. 1972) ja Rubén Pellejero (s. 1952). Vuoteen 1915 sijoittuvassa tarinassa Canales ja Pellejero noudattavat uskollisesti Prattin kirjoitus- ja piirrostyyliä. Lopputulos ei siis ole mitenkään mullistava, mutta ei lainkaan huonokaan.

Albumissa Corto Maltese matkustaa Kanadaan ystävänsä Jack Londonin jäljillä. Matkan varrella tavataan tutuista Corto-hahmoista mm. Rasputin ja Kanadan metsistä löytyy mm. feeniläisiä kapinallisia, joita on piileskellyt siellä 1860-luvulta saakka. Muista historiallisista tapahtumista albumissa mainitaan mm. Panaman maailmannäyttely.

Corto Maltese tager til Antartiken og konfronterer sig med magtmisbrug i forskellige former. Han og hans venner skaber retfærdighed. Vinden blæser og han surfer i den. Han ved, selvfølgelig, at det er gunstig at have venner, selvom i helvede.

Jeg har nydt at læse denne her eventyr i en lille time og ser frem til at drømme om Cortos' eventyrer i nat.

Tak til Juan Díaz Canales, Rubén Pellejero for den originale version og til Faraos Cigarer, Christopher Ouzman, Oliver Friis og Thomas Bregnegaard for den danske version, som jeg har lige læst. Jeg takker også Humblebæks bibliotekket for tilbyde tegneserien til rådighed og fri læsning til alle.

Hermosa obra que hace honor a la saga de la que proviene. Díaz Canales conserva muchas de las características que hicieron grande al personaje de Pratt y el arte de Pellejero incluso mejora el original, manteniendo el aire clásico de las historias de Corto pero con más delicadez en los fondos y en los paisajes en general. El diseño de Corto tiene una línea muy bien cuidada que se agradece y se convierte en un verdadero homenaje al maestro Hugo Pratt.

Onhan se vähän pelottava ajatus, että Corto Maltese ilman Hugo Prattia, mutta sitten kun muistaa, millaista perseilyä Prattin viimeset Cortot olivat, niin ei se enää pelotakkaan.
Oli tämä ihan viihdyttävä seikkailu, kaikki seikkailun osa-alueet oikeilla paikoilla ja kohdallaan. Eikä "unenomaista" tai "runollista" typerehtimistä.
Ei täydellinen mutta todella hyvä.

Nice return to Corto, the two authors have taken the best of Corto from Pratt: values, characters, humor, drawings. On the other hand I am too anchored to read Corto through the eyes of Pratt that it's still missing something here. For the big traditional fans of Corto, his last adventure ended up with Pratt!

Doesn't work for me I'm afraid. Really wanted to like it, but Corto and Hugo are inseparable for me, and in this one, Corto just lacks his usual charisma and demeanor. Sadly Corto died when Hugo Pratt passed away, and will stay sorely missed.
