Best book of series so far! This one was crazy intense, as well as 2 new characters introduced, and they are great additions. Plus a new twist in the zombies, some mutations evolving. Really helps keeping the story intriguing, exciting and scary!
I found the emptying of the ship to be just a tad too easy. I am curious about the new emerging zombie strains emerging from this outbreak. I will have to hunt up the rest of the books in this series if I wish to continue with it.
I snagged reading this one as it was part of audible for another month for free. Not that I wouldn’t have read it anyway. I wasn’t going to read it until I was ready to write my fourth zombie novel. I enjoyed the first two books. I thought it was a different and good zombie novel series. I did feel like we didn’t get to finish the end of book 2 but that will pick up in book four. We still follow some of the main characters we met before. It works a standalone zombie novel which is also nice. I will keep reading. 3.5 stars
The book is set in a post apocalyptic setting, where zombies are taking over. Angie, the main protagonist and her 3 companions are in search of Angie's husband and daughter. The main part of the book follows the husband and daughter as they try to survive the apocalypse and try to find Angie. The book is very good and catches your attention, it makes you nervous about what is going to happen.
In Drifters, the third book in the Omega Days Series, John L. Campbell shows us that there is more to fear than the walking dead. In this continuation, we are shown that sometimes the living are the real monsters. Drifters takes us on a rescue mission and a battle of wits with some of the original Omega Days survivors. Campbell is a master when it comes to describing and setting the scene for urban warfare. The battle scenes, the nail biting situations, and the character developments are done so well you'd be hard pressed to believe you are reading a work of fiction. Drifters is the novel in the Omega Days Series that we have been waiting for. It addresses many of the original predicaments faced by our survivors. It also introduces some new and not so friendly faces. Campbell does a fantastic job showcasing the zombies and making sure you realize this is still an apocalyptic zombie novel. He also introduces the idea that the dead are not the only monsters we should be afraid of. Drifters is a story of fierce survival and the power of love and the lengths we will go to for our loved ones. We see some of our favorite characters take on this new world and are given the revenge we have been seeking. This book will certainly bring fans back for more and will leave everyone on the edge of their seat. The heartbreaking moments, the nonstop action, and the promise of more adventures will keep readers coming back for more of the Omega Days Series.
I meant to read a romance on Valentine's Day, but once I picked this up, I couldn't put it down. This works fairly well as a jump on point for the series if you don't want to go back and read the first two books in the series. I think the action flowed better, and we finally get to find out what happened to Angie's family. Some of it is devastating, because the real monsters in zombie fiction are usually the surviving humans.
Once again, the fighting is fierce, the zombies are relentless, and the bad humans are BAD HUMANS! Lots of new characters to wish death upon, as well as a few to cheer for their survival. I think that's why I enjoy the series so much; I get so caught up in the characters and their struggles (both good and bad) to survive, and the tension is so great that it's hard to disengage from the story. I save these for the weekend, so I don't have to go anywhere and can just sit like a lump and read them to the end.
There's a scary new type of zombie, and I can hardly wait for Sept, when Crossbones hits store shelves to find out more about them. If you are a chicken sh!t like me, read this on an ereader at night, turn off the lights, and prepare to be FREAKED out! Fun, fun read.
The third entry in John Campbell's "Omega Days" series sustains the high quality Campbell established at the outset. Here the plot focuses on a rescue mission undertaken by one of the main characters, television gun show host Angie West, to locate her husband and young daughter, from who she has been separated since the zombie apocalypse broke out several months earlier. Aided by three other main characters from the series, Angie and her friends venture almost 200 miles north from San Francisco to Chico in a Black Hawk helicopter from their safe haven aboard the USS Nimitz, only to find that the rest of Angie's family has been attacked by a gang of vicious marauders led by a megalomaniacal and sadistic kingpin. Much of the novel retraces the story of Angie's husband and daughter during the months they were separated, while also covering the activities of the marauders as they establish a compound within Chico and terrorize the rest of the living population in cruel and deadly fashion. With its smaller scale and intensive focus on its main characters, "Drifters" is another winner in one of the best series of zombie novels now available. Looking forward to book 4, scheduled for release later in 2015!
This has proven to be a truly above average zompoc series. I have enjoyed following the the characters and their adventures. With DRIFTERS, Campbell changes the game somewhat and makes the zombies that much more interesting. A fine pager turner with plenty of action and adventure and plausibility (well, as plausible as anything could be in a "zombie apocalypse"). I heartily recommend this installment of the OMEGA DAYS series. I recommend them all.
John L. Campbell is three for three! So far, I have not read one terrible book in this zombie series. "Drifters," like the other two books, is propulsive, exciting, brutal, human, thrilling, gross, shocking, and a whole hell of a lot of fun to read. There are great twists, turns, cliffhangers, and surprises. Campbell is not afraid to put our favorite characters in massive peril and/or kill off those same characters. Hell, the guy isn't even afraid to kill a child in what is a gut-wrenching death. That's why I love this series and desperately want to read book #4.
This book is well constructed with two separate timelines that slowly converge in incredibly surprising ways. Each timeline is well written with one set in the present and the other set in the past. The present day story finds Angie, Skye, Vlad, and Carney (all from part 2) arriving in Chico in a desperate attempt to find Angie's husband, daughter, and parents. During this timeline, we also meet the wretched group of bikers, army deserters, and criminals ruling over the city with absolute power and terror. This group once again proves that it is often the survivors who are the most dangerous rather than the walking dead. In this mix is Halsey, a loner who has managed to survive on his own, but soon finds himself crossing paths with Angie and her group. In the timeline set in the past, we find out what happened to to Dean West and Leah West, Angie's husband and daughter.
Both timelines are never boring. I was always expecting the worst which I sometimes got from Campbell, but he also often surprised me with joy and happiness. But, that was few and far between. LOL!
This has been my favoriye book out of the first three in this series. I loved it, it had me burning through the pages so fast, I had to pace myself otherwise I would not have gotten any sleep till I finished. The Hobglobin scared the crap out of me and I loved every minute of it. Skye is one of my favorites out of all the heartache she has endure she still finds the strenght to keep fighting. She went from the teenage freshman college student to badass zombie apocalypse survivalist, I would like to know if ever anything like that happened I would be like Skye, but i would most likely end up being like a Garfield only surving by chance and fear haha. Book three was action pact I loved it, and would deinitely recommend it to anyone looking for a good scare and tons of action.
the pattern of campbell’s writing shows drastically here, faux tension and extensive sequences of repetitive action make this the weakest entry by far. most zombie stories have a point where they reach the “humans are the true monster” thesis, and they all have a sort of similar approach in doing so. it’s the walking dead. 28 weeks later. mountain man. any zombie story wherein the survivors form a harsh militia.
i’d be more inclined to enjoy this if it wasn’t clear that the author really only wants to tell half the story — any & all of your favourite characters are not going to be covered here, in favor of a classic rescue mission tale through the lens of a character that’s not very interesting.
Vladimir flies Angie and two others to try and find Angie's husband and daughter.
Excellent zombie series! The last book focused on claustrophobic fear and this one opened back up to trying to survive without shelter. Campbell does a great job with zombie grossness while also making you really care about the characters - you feel like you have skin in the game. There's a new mutation with intelligent, cherry-red zombies in this one that promises to make our characters be under even more threat. I'll definitely read the next book in the series.
I'll give this 5 stars. I read the first Omega Days Novel a year or so ago and was so disappointed when I couldn't find d the second book. Now I'm past the third and they are just as Good as the first. Action and drama and great characters make a really good story then the bad guys are bad and the zombies keep coming. Now we have a new type of zombie and survivors who developed immunity so on with number 4.
This was a amazing book. I picked it up at a bookstore and it blew me away. It honestly got me back into reading again. I read almost the entire series after finishing this book. I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to read horror and apocalypse stories.
So, happy to pick up this series again. I enjoy the continued search to reunite friends and family in the midst of zombies and hellish biker gangs gone rogue. I’ve become invested in these characters. I’m ready for the next book!
Good action and continues the stories of some of the original characters. There is one element that feels a little too much like Resident Evil but won't say more to avoid spoilers.
Can't wait to find out more, especially with the new type of zombie. And finding out there is another person out there like skye who is immune to the virus now.
