Anni and Lexi are both orphans who know nothing of their true origins, having grown up together as wards of the joint owners of a very special boarding school they’ve faced their fair level of distain and judgement by some of the other people residing at the boarding school. Both, Anni and Lexi have secrets, secrets they are even keeping from one another, bound by their guardians to never tell a soul. But as those they rely on vanish with no trace, and they find themselves facing more than one mystery/adventure, will they reveal their secrets and unravel the secrets hidden from them.

Overall this was an enjoyable enough one time read, interlaced with fantasy, adventure, mystery and some intrigue. That being said, the book didn’t weave an intricate spell encasing me tightly in the story as I would have liked.

*NetGalley book review*

I enjoyed this book so much, I decided to read it to my son in the evenings before bed. He very much enjoyed it. I loved the characters, such imaginative details and the world they live in. We laughed and had a great time getting lost in this. Such a great book.

An enchanting tale. Recommended for readers 8+.

Anni Moon is the story of two orphan girls. They're the best of friends, Anni and Lexi, who live together at a private girl’s school, Waterstone Academy, which has been owned and run by a family for many years. In fact, it's the very same family who are their guardians.

Their whole life is turned upside down within a short period of time when both of their guardians mysteriously disappear and the girls learn that the school is to be sold to the mean old Mr Orge Murdrock. With no guardians around to look out for them, they are told that they can no longer live at the school. They have nowhere else to go, and the girls hope that things couldn't get any worse. That's where the plot thickens and their hopes are dashed.

Lexi suddenly disappears, and without hesitation Anni begins to search for her. That's where readers are led on two separate journeys that are intricately weaved together. One follows Lexi and the other follows Anni. As the plots unfold, Melanie Abed gradually reveals details of another world that lays hidden behind the everyday. And it seems that one of the girls knows more about such a place than she had ever revealed. This secret life of Lexi is an underlying mystery that Anni learns of and tries to solve, while desperately trying to track her down.

As Anni's search begins, she unwittingly enters into a contract with a mysterious hidden force that both guides and confuses her along the way. She moves from one challenge to the next and proves that she is a very strong willed girl. She never waivers in her determination to find her missing friend and I feel that Anni is a great role model in perseverance for young readers.

Being the first book of the series there was a lot of building in the first half, and I found that the storyline noticeably ramped up in the second. Once Anni had found her feet, made new friends and had set her goal, I found the journey was easier to follow. I think that came with becoming familiar with the characters and being able to focus more on the story rather than learning what's what and who's who in the zoo.

Some parts of this book reminded me of an Alice in Wonderland type adventure. It was full of unexpected transitions and journeys from one odd setting to another, and there was a host of weird and wonderful characters to get to know. One thing I found was that I had absolutely no idea who to trust. The writing was easy to follow and plenty of clever twists kept me guessing and changing my mind from page to page. I was definitely hooked to find the answers about Lexi’s disappearance and of the magical hidden world in which Anni found herself.

I loved the cover of this one too, it grabbed me as soon as I saw it. The cover and other great illustrations inside were expertly crafted by Melanie's husband, Hisham Abed.

In a nutshell: An enchanting tale, Anni Moon's adventures should appeal to young girls that dream of magical places. Her strength of character should also teach some valuable lessons.

Recommended for readers 8+.

Note: I don't claim to be a pro-reviewer, I am a reader. My reviews are based on my personal thoughts around the story that the book is trying to tell. I try to focus on the story (which is the reason I read) rather than dissect the book and pass comment on typos, writing style or structure.

Anni is an orphan but when her guardians disappear and her best friend is kidnapped, Annis life changes forever. She is dragged into a world she never knew existed and has no idea what is going on. Never the less Anni plows through and knows she has to rescue her friend before it's too late.

This was a pleasant surprise and I really enjoyed it though at the start I was a little lost, kind of like Anni! Once it all came together though and I was caught up, I really liked it.

Character wise - Anni is such a likable character. She has no clue about the magical world, until a talking rat thing comes to her with a message. Even though she doesn't understand everything, she plows through and does all she can to find her friend. She is nice, brave and extremely loyal. I really liked her and know that most people will. There is also a whole host of characters in the book and all of them are well written and developed.

Plot wise - The plot is very fast paced and enjoyable. There's a lot of secrets revealed slowly but this adds to the mystery and intrigue of the book.

Overall it's an adventurous and action packed read. You will fall in love with Anni and the fantastical world that the author has created. The story really pulls you in and brings you on the magical journey with Anni! Being the first in the series, we are left with a lot of questions but that just makes you want the next book more. I'm really looking forward to more from Anni Moon and the gang.

Wonderful story about friendship, growing up and lots more. Wrapped in a magical world of colourful creatures.
At first I had trouble with the many different characters, who are introduced in a short time. (Maybe a list of characters at the beginning of the book could solve that?). Combined with a lot of unanswered questions, make it not an easy read at first. But when you keep reading, more and more mysteries get solved and the adventures keep you flowing through the book! You just have to keep reading!
And the illustrations are really beautiful!
Thank you, Melanie Abed, for sharing this!

Imaginative

Imaginative middle grade story. This was a very pleasant surprise. If you like Brandon Mull's Fablehaven, or The Beyonders series, you will enjoy Annie Moon & The Elemental Artifacts.
This story is well crafted however, at times it seems like the "supporting" characters are more important than the main character. I think this is done with purpose as at the end you find out Anni's special importance. It felt like each "friend" will have an important role in future stories. Similar to the Percy Jackson series.
Thank you for reading my review, I hope you found this helpful.

Well, that was quite an adventure! Melanie Abed created a very imaginative and interesting world. As you read through, you learn more about this world full of interesting characters, and some secrets are slowly revealed. But there are still secrets that I suspect will be revealed in later books, and I'm looking forward to the sequel. Very good first book! Hopefully it's only the first!

At the disappearance (and presumed death) of their caretaker, the headmistress of a girls' school, Anni and her best friend Lexi are being evicted from the only home they've ever known. But strange things begin happening. Anni meets a talking bat. She hears a voice in her head. And then Lexi disappears. Desperate to save her, Anni stumbles into the realm of the Elementals. New friends and old secrets. Mirrors and Zephyrs. Prophecies and precious stones.

This story has stunning world-building, and the adventure unfolds like a mystery. Hints and red herrings abound. I loved Anni's discoveries about the Elemental world, and I adored the friends she made there. Especially Squirt. I want more!

Later, Mr. Murdrock (Elementals) announces he is the new owner of Waterstone Academy.

The Voice newspaper headlines read/confirmed Theodore Teddy Ezra Waterstone is dead.
Mabel Moon (Teddy’s sister-in-law) has also disappeared or presumed dead also.

Zelda Scurryfunge (Krizia’s sister-in-law) is missing?
How do the Opus Stone necklaces help?
Who is Queen Naga Yaga?
Fancy having a Funkometer or an Omninavigational device!?

I did not receive any type of compensation for reading & reviewing this book. While I receive free books from publishers & authors, I am under no obligation to write a positive review. Only an honest one.

A very awesome book cover, cool map, great font & writing style. A very well written older MS age children’s mysterious fantasy adventure book. It was very easy for me to read/follow from start/finish & never a dull moment. There were no grammar/typo errors, nor any repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a great set of unique characters to keep track of. This could also make another great older child’s mysterious fantasy adventure movie, animated cartoon, or mini TV series. A very easy rating of 5 stars.

Thank you for the free Goodreads; Author; PDF book

Anna Moon & The Elemental Artifact
By: Melanie Abed
I received an advanced reader copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

Story Synopsis
His book is ideal for young people - perhaps 10 and up.
This is a mystery set in an alternate reality in England. The story moves between the viewpoint of two best friends (Anni Moon and Lexi Waterstone). Lexi is kidnapped and Anni must find her. Along the way, Anni finds out about Elementals, the Elemental world that lies within our world, prophecies both fulfilled and unfulfilled, and an intricate mystery that centers around a missing artifact. There is a lot gong on in this story so the reader must really pay attention.

Illustrations
I knew that I was in for a treat with this book as soon as I saw it. The illustrations (done by the author's husband - Hisham Abed) are charming and really do bring the Elemental world to life. I loved the map at the beginning. It gave you a way to visualize their town and also to place it in time. The Chapter One illustration is of Brat the messenger half bat/ half rat who becomes such an important friend in the book. I loved them all.

Plot
The plot is deliciously full of details with brilliant pacing. The story never flags as there are mystery reveals throughout the story. I loved that all the details were remembered. For instance, near the beginning of the book, Anni encountered a strange door in her deceased Aunt's apartment. When she opened it up, a golden arm came through and snatched her Aunt's necklace. Anni's guardian (who now lives in her (Aunt's apartment) denies the existence of the door. Where does the door lead? What about the arm, is it friendly or scary? Why doesn't her guardian know about the door? If he does know, why is he lying? All this and more answered just when you least expect them to be answered.
The plot does have a lot of elements juggling in the air all the time. My only concern was that this could be a bit worrisome to the reader sometimes. In fact, up to the final 100 pages, the author is introducing new characters and mythologies. For instance, chapter 41 (out of 43) introduces us to the Tree of Death, the Guardian of the Jaguar and Cat People, the concept of his soul/ body being split by going into the Tree of Death, the idea of their entire community being physically sick because of the Guardian's condition. There is a lot going on. Pay attention! Follow this amazing author and you will be rewarded by a very satisfying plot with all the bits and pieces securely bound within the story

Conclusion
This author has created an entire world and we get to live in it for a while.. Earlier in the book, when our characters are at the hub (a transport center that seems like an airport terminal) Anni says that she can't wait to explore every bit of this place. I feel the same way about seeing into every nook and cranny of this world. I can't wait to read the next book!

Anni Moon and her best friend Lexi are orphans. They have been raised in an all girls school by their guardians, whose families have always run the school and for Anni especially, it has not always been easy. Anni’s beloved guardian Mabel disappeared and was declared dead three years ago which made things even harder. Now Lexi’s guardian has disappeared and been declared dead too. The school, their only home, is being purchased and everything is changing. Suddenly an impossible creature, a flying rat in clothes, chases Anni down to give her a message: “You must not leave school Anni Moon.” He will not tell her who the message is from but he does mention he had already delivered a message to Lexi.

Things only start to get stranger as the girls are expelled then Lexi is kidnapped and Anni is forced on a plane with a cat by her guardian. Anni is unhappy and takes pity on the cat and lets him out of his carrier, only for him to walk off and have to be chased down. When Anni finds him in the bathroom she tries to pick him up and is suddenly in another place altogether. This is where Anni learns about elementals and the world they live in, which her guardians seem to be a part of and have kept secret from her. As Anni learns more about a world she never could have dreamed up, and her best friend who has her own secrets, she determinedly insists on doing things her way and putting everything she has into finding Lexi.

This is the first book in a series and as such, it tries to lay down a lot of information. At times it can be overwhelming to remember all the characters or understand what is happening. But the author’s writing style kept pulling me along as I fell in love with Anni. She is a strong willed 12 (almost 13) year old girl that is a great example of perseverance. The world created by the author is rich and varied and kept astounding me. She creates words that are silly and fun and make your mouth pucker and twist. My son and I giggled at some of the silliness. The fact that it is intended as a series is good, because this book did leave me with many questions and we cannot wait to delve into book 2.

This book is great for readers 8 and up. While it may be aimed at girls, I think young boys would love it just as much. It could appeal to children who enjoy magical and supernatural stories like Harry Potter and the Bartimaeus Trilogy.

A cute story full of fun and adventure. This story follows Anni Moon and her best friend, Lexi Waterstone. The two girls knew very little about themselves, are both orphans, and have each lost the one person that they looked at like family. And as the story begins, they are about to lose the only place they have ever called home, Waterstone Academy for Girls.

There are changes in the girls lives that they can’t control, so the first chance that they get to have a little say in their lives, they take it, and it leads them to quite the adventure. Anni is a determined, brave little girl (who is often in trouble). Lexi is her opposite, and her balance. And Lexi carries a secret that she wishes she could share with Anni. And then, Lexi disappears. Anni is determined to find her! Her reactions and thoughts are so genuine to that of a young girl, it’s more than a pleasure to read. As the world around Anni unfolds, and new characters come out, you find yourself a little overwhelmed with trying to keep track of who is who and what is going on, but in a way this is good, because Anni too is confused. All the while, fighting a “Funk” she had no idea even existed. But the further Anni goes and the more you learn, the faster you will read through this. The only real pity is when you come to the end, and you just want to keep going.

And I really liked the illustrations too, very cute. Except when they’re not (chapters 26 and 42, I’m looking at you!).

This is an easy read, but not something just for young readers. Readers of all ages should be able to jump right into Anni’s story and follow along with her adventures. I got this book through Story Cartel, and upon finishing this, I cannot wait to both read it again with my niece (6) and to get more of Anni’s adventures in the books to come. My niece is learning to read, and while I know I will have to help her with any words, I think she will really enjoy this. But I wouldn’t stop at just reading this to girls. It should be read to boys too, so they can see the kind of adventures that a cool, smart girl like Anni can have.

Anni is an orphan who is going through some difficult times. Her guardians have mysteriously disappeared, and are presumed dead. Even worse, the school where she has been living, Waterstone Academy for Girls, is being sold and she might have to move. When her best friend and fellow orphan Lexi also disappears, Anni knows she has to do everything she can to save her.

While writing the first book in what is destined to become a fantasy series, the author must devote some time developing the parameters of her new world while still moving the plot forward. Abed does this deftly through Anni’s adventures. At first the reader is as confused and naive as Anni, but as Anni barrels forward, more and more is revealed.

There are “elements” in the last few chapters that some readers might find disappointing. Without giving away the ending, Anni performs an important task, but then credit is given, out of necessity, to another person. This is a wonderful opportunity for a reading group or class to discuss how it might feel to have someone else receive credit for work you did or an idea you had. What does this say about Anni’s character? It could also be a jumping off point for a discussion of plagiarism.

Anni Moon and The Elemental Artifact is a fast-paced adventure, a mystery, and a fantasy world all rolled into one. A winner for fans of middle grade fantasy.

My immediate response upon finishing Anni Moon was to rush to the author's website to sign up for a newsletter - I have to know when the next book will be released.

This is a darling fantastical read that is bound to appeal to all ages. The contemporary realm blends beautiful with a whimsical realm full of its own words, foods, and creatures. Anni and Lexi are orphans - twice over, actually, as their guardians have gone missing. They still have each other though...even if they may be getting booted by the academy. Strange things start happening, including Anni being visited by...a talking bat? (yes, of sorts) who tells her not to leave grounds. Then she gets the strange order not to leave Lexi's side. Before she knows it, she's in another realm...and Lexi is missing. Can she solve the mystery their guardians were working on? Can she find Lexi?

Full of mystery, adventure, and plain ol' fun, this is an exciting joyful read - probably geared towards middle-grade, but I can see it appealing to fans of Harry Potter and Percy Jackson in general.

What I loved most was the very subtle discussions on intention and positive energy - while I'm not sure it was intended that way, I can see this book as a great entryway to discussions on intention, energy work, and the law of attraction of sorts. I completely gobbled this book up, enjoying the characters, the vivid imagery, and the adorable illustrations.

Simply put - this is a book I've already grabbed from Amazon and I'll be keeping it around to read to my (currently in belly) child. That good.

Anni and Lexi live at Waterstone Academy, which seems like a normal school for children. But things have been happening. Both have lost their caregivers under mysterious events. And now the school is going to be purchased and things are getting worse. When the current headmistress disappears like the last one, things start getting exciting.

Anni and Lexi get separated and Anni gets thrust into a new world of Elementals. But Lexi has some knowledge and is stuck in a far worse adventure. Between the two girls they have to fight the funk that is affecting everyone. But that is just the tip of the iceberg for what the girls are about to face.

Anni is a human that just plugs along in school. She is supposed to help out in the kitchen and seems to always be in trouble. Lexi has more knowledge of what is really going on but was told to keep it secret from Anni. I love the connection between the girl and the loyalty. Anni is very single minded in finding and protecting Lexi. And although she is thrown into a strange new world she just keeps plugging along.

This is a great children’s adventure that I think everyone will like. Make sure to add it to your list.

I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review.

This story had so many elements and characters and scenes that were really fun. That's why I give it 4 stars even though it has some huge issues that prevented it from being awesome.

First, I had no idea it was set in Chicago, let alone the real world, until part way through. The very first chapter starts with a girl named Anni Moon at a boarding school of some kind, and she is approached by a flying bat/rat (named Brat!). Flying bat/rats—sure. No problem. But Anni goes bonkers, and laughs it off to her friend later that she 'imagined' this talking creature.
Huh?

Basically, there is no precedent. As a reader I did not get to see 'normal' in Anni's life—normal day, normal school life, normal interaction between her and her friend Lexi—so when the supposedly abnormal happened, I couldn't understand why Anni was being so stupid.

And the whole book we are told 'Lexi is family' and Anni only thinks or cares about Lexi. That's cute, but we see maybe a dozen lines between the two girls, and no actual indication that they are such good friends.

This book is a fun magical adventure story that is entertaining despite its flaws.

Secrets Great And Small

This series must be read in order. This is the first book.

Anni and Lexi are both orphans who know nothing of their true origins. They have grown up together as wards of the joint owners of a very special boarding school. Each has secrets from the other they were bound by their guardians to never tell a soul... But if you can't trust family then who can you trust? Both girls' guardians are missing and presumed dead so now truly they only have each other to rely on. Will they unravel the mysteries surrounding the sudden disappearances? Will they ever figure out who they can and can't trust? Who is after them and why?

This was an awesome fantasy adventure with plenty of mystery and intrigue! I really enjoyed the unique twist on the coming of age story as well as the fact that so many mysteries are left to be solved. I truly found my self immersed in this world and cannot wait to read then next book so I can be again!

***This middle grade reader is suitable for all ages and may be read to less advanced readers and younger children

This book is aimed at kids 8-18, but I thoroughly enjoyed it as well! The author takes Harry Potter, Nancy Drew, Tolkien, Narnia and Ramona Quibley and shakes them all together, and comes up with the most wonderful tale of friendship and courage for young girls, I've seen in a long time! If you're getting your child a tablet or ereader for the holidays, make sure this chapter book is on it!

I literally could not put the book down once I started to read it (I previewed it for 8 YR OLD DAUGHTER) and read it in one sitting (it does have 314 pages). The story line never dips in interest, and like the Harry Potter books, your child will be turning pages as fast as they can to see how Lexi and Anni are handling the spots they have gotten in, and who will appear next and confound what they think they know as a reader.

I am hoping this is the beginning of a new series, as I'd love to read further adventures of the girls and their new friends, and family members, in their new home, above London! And I knw

Anni Moon & the Elemental Artifact is an action, adventure story geared towards middle grade readers. The adventure begins with Anni and Lexi who are both orphans. They are growning up together as young wards of the owners of a special boarding school. Anni and Lexi have no idea where they came from or who their birth parents were. Both Anni and Lexi have special secrets that they were bound by their guardians to never tell a soul...even each other.

As the story continues, their guardians go missing and it is up to the both of them to trust each other and figure out the mystery, but can they really trust each other even with their secrets? And, when someone is after them, they have to figure out who it is and why they are determined to get the girls!

This is a fun story with intriguing characters. Anni andd Lexi are both likeable. Anni especially shows a maturity and bravery for her age that kept even me interested. This is a great beginning to a series that young readers and fantasy lovers will enjoy.

Anni is just a young girl trying to figure out her place in a world gone topsy turvy. Her guardian went missing years ago but her saving grace was her best friend Lexi. Now even she has gone missing and there are weird creatures and a place in the sky! A strange world filled with voices in her head and something called a rat bat .... and most mysteriously of all .... Elementals.

This book is adorable! It is definitely better for younger readers, probably under the age of 14. It's a cute quick read though for any adult looking for something adorable and fluffy. The action is fairly well paced and the language is descriptive while still being accessible for younger readers!

I really loved the way the author painted pictures with her words. I thought it was interesting and inventive. I am actually kind of hoping that she will come out with something for older readers now!

I read this book upon request of the author. In my opinion, young readers - middle school, junior high - would really enjoy it. Personally, I am open to nearly any kind of book no matter what age the intended audience. This book had all kinds of interesting characters and mysteries to solve. The main character, Annie Moon, was adventurous, strong and clever. I liked that about her. She also cared deeply for her friends and those she regarded as family. She wasn't freaked out - well, not for long anyway - about being in a strange place with really strange creatures. She was focused on finding her friend, Lexi, no matter what. Lexi, on the other hand, appeared meek but her association with Annie strengthened her. This was a very good book with lots of lessons that could be learned. It moved along well and I think any middle school/junior high reader would really enjoy it.

Great story, memorable characters! This book kept me engrossed from the moment I began. The characters were well portrayed, and Anni's developing friendships were revealing of some of her innermost feelings. I really loved that Anni was so open and her thoughts really let us understand her. The voice in her head was a curious phenomenon that added intrigue to the whole of the story. The plot had enough twists and turns and was different enough that I think sequels will not feel like the same ol', same ol' story. I really enjoyed this book, and the only reason it is not a 5 star book for me is that I reserve 5 stars for books that I will never forget or that are life altering. While it is neither of these for me, I think kids will love it and recommend it amongst themselves!

I received all free copy of this book from Story Cartel in exchange for my honest review. The cover and inner illustrations were excellent. Melanie Abed has a phenomenal imagination. The best part about the book is the author's cliff hangers. She changes points of view and then leaves the reader hanging. One has to read through an entire chapter to find out what happens next. I also like the idea of a female heroine. Anni is a strong character, a good model for any young girls who might be reading. Other than some formatting problems, needing page breaks before the start of a new chapter, I couldn't find much wrong with this book. Great writing!

Magic. Danger. Intrigue. And Elementals. It seems that lately, Elemantals are the new go-to for fantasy adventure stories, and I for one am perfectly fine with that. And for some reason, I honestly have no idea why, I love books with adding schools in them. Really, I don't know why! I just do! Anyway, this book is great. It sends a great message topics about loyalty and friendship. And honestly, a few adults could use a lesson in ghat themselves. Anni Moon risked everything and all to save her friend, Lexi. I highly recommend this book. A wonderful, magical adventure with a subtle, yet powerful, moral message.

Wow! Reading books like this makes me wish I was a kid again and could read them without people looking at me funny! It was a wonderful fantasy world, and I'm looking forward to seeing what comes next in later books. To be honest, I don't even care if people look at me funny! If I'm having fun, that's all that counts!

I love watching young girls do their thing and getting into scrapes without having to have someone bail them out immediately. GIRL POWER at its finest. She had to figure her way out without help, and I thought it was AWESOME!
