The Missing Planets

Rate this book
Generations after the great Murian upheaval of the Malfesian War against the Bleikovats, the Accords between planets Terato and Myr are signed. Provisional Outpost Terato is under construction near a farm where Teratoan orphan Eklam a'Qoc lives with his uncle and cousin. Inquisitive strong-minded Eklam, Ek to everyone in the village, is captivated by the off-worlders technology, and becomes an apprentice to the Outpost Terato's Murian commander, Grand Duke Korvo. Uncle a'Qoc disapproves; wants nothing to do with these outlanders, wants their shimmering doorway portals-of-travel banned from Terato. As Outpost Terato becomes operational it seems to become a harbinger stirring ageless secrets of The Old Ones and their frightful weapons, of ancient Teratoan ruins, mysterious glowing lights, unexplained killings, a sacred book in a language no Teratoan can read, a moon that doesn't behave like a moon in its wobbly orbit. From cosmic reaches beyond space and time the ominous secrets of Terato's ancient ruins become more threatening. Ek and Korvo realize both their worlds face extinction with any hope buried somewhere in unknown galaxies far beyond a pastoral Terato or the sophisticated star-empire of the Murians; of missing planets in a star system with its single star in a galaxy far-removed unknown to Terato or Myr. They travel across the universe to a place long forgotten to fight this unknown foe with weapons only dreamed of. Together they face the beast that wishes to consume the entire universe.

In Book 2, “The Missing Planets”, We land inside a planet called Terato. We meet a new young man named Ek to all his friends and family. Though is full name is Eklam.

This story continues a story plot of a different kind of war but one that affects all the planets in the Solaris world. If you recall the first book is called “The Belikovat Events” well, it mentioned and referenced throughout the book. This is when it connects the two books.

Does Terato have a history of invaders of their own in their history of life? This one likes to attack planets and destroy life and create extinction? They seem to want to help make sure that Earth or to them Eorthe. The planet they so want to warn and need the help of is called “Eorthe-Lanartan”.

This story is well written. I enjoyed the way it is different. It a way to connect the first book to the second. Though it mostly takes place on Terato and with the help of Korvo. Though Korvo does not much he seems to help Ek with what going on and also helps with guiding him and his planet, He does not overstep. He lets Ek lead his teams and make decisions.

The Missing Planet
The Cairns of Sainctuarie #2
By Hawk MacKinney

More than 30 generations have passed since The Bleikovat Event and the Murian people and the planet Myr are part of the Confederated League of Allied Star Systems. A League in which the planet Teranto hopes to become a full planet member. But some unexplained deaths among the Teratoan people is being blamed upon the Murians bu those opposed to change.

Eklam a'Qoc, unlike his Uncle a'Qoc, is more than willing to embrace the change and improvements such an alliance will bring. The unexplained deaths are troubling but Ek doesn't blame the Murian people or his mentor Grand Duke Herklo Korvo. Korvo is concerned especially when unexplained attacks start targetting various points throughout the League - attacks that appear capable of destroying a world and its people.

Facing an ancient mystery with ties to Teranto stories of long ago referencing "Old Ones" who would one day return, Ek, Korvo, and other scientists make a journey to discover the truth. But this is a journey from which they might not return. Rift intrusions are threatening the stability of everything they hold dear and the very portals they need to use.

Traveling to the further reaches of space to an unknown planet that an ancient map refers to as Jupiterr in the Solrais system Ek and Korvo are faced with an unwelcome truth their unknown enemy has seemingly found them yet again. With time short and growing shorter, they do the only thing possible, reach out with a warning to the inhabitants of Eorthe about the threat to their very existence.

This book has a good steady, pacing and a lot of technical talk which if you don't understand is nothing to worry about (just pretend that you get it and read on). There is a glossary of terms located at the end of the book to help out with some of the local phrasing but not the technical. This book while the second in the series can totally be a stand-alone title given the great length of time that is between books, the new characters, and the new setting. I have to admit I liked this book better than the first probably just because it was more scientifically driven, but both had the urgency of survival as a driving force behind the action. This is definitely a book for fans of Science or Fantasy Fiction and not someone looking for a Cozy Mystery or a Gentle Read.

I received a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I offer my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

The Missing Planets is the second installment from The Cairns of Sainctuarie series by Hawk MacKinney. I enjoyed the first book, The Bleikovat Event. Even though it is part of a series, I believe it can be read as a stand alone. It does reference a few times about the events from book one, it still was not enough to make a reader feel lost. The author’s writing style is unique and different that does take a little bit getting used to. But once I could did adapted to the style, I find his stories are engaging. This time, readers are taken to a whole new planet. There are, also, new characters introduced. Eklam is one likeable character that I liked from the start. It was fun and entertaining being taken to his world. I felt like I was taken on an adventure. I never knew what was going to happen next. It is full of action that held my attention all of the way to the end.

I am giving The Missing Planets three and half stars. I look forward to the next addition from The Cairns of Sainctuarie series, Inanna Phantom. I wonder what world I will travel to next and curious as to what adventure awaits. I think many readers who enjoy well written and action packed science fiction will not want to miss this one. I, also, recommend it for others to go outside their comfort zone and give this one to try. It is definitely worth a read.

I received this book from the publisher. This review is 100% my own honest opinion.

This book is a wonderful addition to the Cairns of Sainctuarie series. This is hard SF... think Larry Niven.

On an adventure level, we have Terato and the Myr worlds under attack and Eklam and Korvo working desperately to find answers and resolve the issue. On a relationship level, we have the friendship and partnership of Ek and Korvo.

Mr. MacKinney is a fine writer who has his world-building down pat. I'm thankful he included a glossary at the end of the book --while some things I understood based on context, it was nice to be able to verify that. And, there were other things I needed the glossary for.

Because of the science involved, it could be a difficult book to read--it's definitely not a book you can skim through or read while other things are going on. But, if you are a fan of hard science fiction, this is definitely a series you will want to check out. It's not necessary to read the first book in the series; it deals with the historical background of this time, but it does give you a feel for the people. You can definitely pick up the series with this book, though.

Missing planets review

A different viewpoint of the old idea that we here on earth have been at least visited by higher intelligence in our past.

As an independent reviewer for Paranormal Books and Authors that Rock, I enjoyed the storyline of this book and the interactions between characters kept me reading to the very end. The action scenes were very exciting as well. I am more of a sci-fantasy geek so the technical terms and discussions of physics tended to make my eyes glaze a bit, but the characters were engaging enough to keep me reading. Between the high level of technical speak and the occasional feel of reading a script I give this one three fangs.
