Reading this book made all the difference (I’d listened to it on Audible previously and couldn’t make it thru more than half the book).
Sad intricate story re the abuse by parent of her children including promoting sexual abuse of her daughters by offering them up to men for her own gain. Also, theres the broad inequality/racism of the time period.
Yet in a warped way, the story also reveals love of the siblings for each other and even their mother who surely was undeserving.
A good read. Characters and settings were presented very vividly. Made it easy to get absorbed by all.
