Some monsters are more wicked than men…

Veteran detective Russell Andrews knows the danger of big-city life.

Rape, murder, gangs… It’s not a place he wants to raise his teenage daughter. So after his divorce, Russell moves with her to serve as the sheriff of a sleepy New Mexican town.

But the desert has dangers of its own—deadly secrets that eat men alive.

Secrets growing in power...

Soon the father and daughter will come face-to-face with a monster out of myth, a force without a name in the modern world. The Navajo, however, have a name for such a beast...

“Scott M. Baker builds tension and explores characters like a seasoned pro, all before offering them up as dinner for some of the creepiest crawlies you'll experience on the page. Literary creature feature

Verified Purchase

This review is from: Yeitso (Kindle Edition)

Other reviews have already compared this book to the 1950's monster movies. So. Expect giant monsters and human prey. You can also expect good writing and a good story. The origin of the monster is just believable enough to allow suspension of disbelief. The interaction of the characters is well done and there is a satisfying end to the book.

Now this is a creature feature you can sink your teeth into! I'm mad at myself for having this book over a year before I finally got to it. When I started reading, I was 100 pages through it in no time, that's how fast paced and engrossing it is. It's got a little bit of Navajo mythology to it, which I found fascinating and ended up Googling Yeitso to read about it. Highly recommend this book!

This review of Yeitso by Scott M. Baker is the result of a copy sent to Ginger Nuts of Horror in exchange for an honest review.

Scott M. Baker is one of those authors I have seen a lot of but never read any of his stuff. It was the cover initially that drew me to this one and after reading the blurb, I requested it and got it. I’m bloody glad I did!

Los Alamos has a new Chief of Police. His name is Russell Andrews. He has recently moved here from New York with his daughter, Kiera, to get away from a nasty city and a nasty divorce. Little did he know the nasty little surprise that was coming his way instead of the quiet life he wanted.

One boy is dead and a girl is missing. It looks like they already have a suspect until it emerges that the boy was burned by an organic liquid sprayed over his body. This liquid could only have come from one thing. An insect. Problem is, the amount of liquid suggests this insect is absolutely huge. Where is it hiding? Is it alone? Russell has a race against time to find out.
If you are around the same age as me then you would have sat as a child in the 70’s possibly watching creature features on a Saturday afternoon. You know the ones? Rubber monsters, screaming women running for their lives and a Sherriff trying to solve something he knows nothing about? Brilliant weren’t they? Although there is a line in Yeitso that states “this isn’t a film from the 1950’s”, that’s exactly what it is, and it’s rather well executed.

Characters wise in this romp, you have them all. The police Chief Russell is a decent fella. He has all the good intentions needed for his role and an attitude to match. His daughter is the 17 year old kid taken from familiar surroundings and forced to set up a new home and new friends. Although not happy about this she adapts well. Bring into her life Josh who takes her under his wings to show her the ropes and much more. The Chief has Molly, his sergeant. She soon becomes more than just his sergeant. Add into the story a mixture of smaller characters like the disgruntled town drunk whose boy dies, the slightly racist policeman and a Native American police Chief. You also get the local mayor and governor demanding things get resolved quickly to save the economic welfare of the region and the scientist who pulls out all the answers when they are needed.

Plot wise it’s all been done before. If you have watched the films I mentioned earlier you will know very well that it can be done badly. It can be a story that just drags along with nothing to keep your interest going so you switch off. Yeitso is much more than just a creature story. You get an in depth look at the characters and their lives both past and present. You can’t help but like them from the very beginning.

On the horror side, I would have liked a lot more. When we come to these scenes they are extremely well written. Mr Baker has a definite talent for building tension and giving you the creep’s big style when something bad is going to happen. You know when bad stuff is coming but can’t help but be scared because he makes you scared. It’s just a pity there wasn’t a lot lot more in this book. The closing scenes as its builds to the climax are fantastic. Horror and gore and tension and raised pulses and cheers for the heroes and boos for the monsters. If this story had have been like that the whole way through this would have been one of the easiest top marks I’ve given for a book in years.

To summarise: yeah, very enjoyable read. Great characters. A very easy to read story that flows extremely well across the page. Perfect pacing and great at giving you a visual impression of the scenes in your head. The horror in this book was very very effective. There just wasn’t enough of it for me. This will in no way stop me picking up something else by Mr Baker. He writes good stuff that I would slot into my “to be read” pile when I want something I know will flow well and be fun.

So close to a 5 star but the need for more horror in it brings me down to a 4.

Reads like a Great Monster movie!

If you loved the 50's and 60's horror movies, you definitely need to read this book! I thoroughly enjoyed it. It would definitely make for a great flick..A helluva lot better than 99% of what Hollywood puts out now days. The characters are extremely well written, giving enough back story to flesh them out, and the story line is easy to follow. I read this book in 1 complete sitting, I couldn't put it down! Thanks Scott, just like your other books, I really enjoyed this one.

Interesting take on prehistoric insects

A small town in New Mexico is being terrorizd by a mystery person. Or are they? When humans and cows are turning up not just dead, but burnt and torn apart, city detective turned small town Sheriff Russell Andrews must find the killer. I really enjoyed this book. It started it making you think you got it all figured out but then find the twist. I highly Recommend.

Fun, fast read. Many a myth or legend is based on some fact.

*****SPOILER*****

Remember those Mother Nature's revenge/giant mammals, reptiles, and insects invade a small town from the 1950s through the 1970s? This reads just like one of those. SciFi channel can make this one cheap and fast.

I grew up watching 50's monster movies so was looking forward to this story and I definitely was not disappointed. I loved this character driven, emotionally charged tale about huge beetles terrorizing a small New Mexican town. It reminded me of one of my favourite classic movies Them. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves the horror/creature genres.

Reminiscent of creature feature movies of days gone by, this is an excellent read.
Not too much gore, sex or ultra violence, this is just a creepy, crawly good time. Join Chief Andrews in his quest to rid a sleepy New Mexico town of an eons old terror. Thanks to Joe Spagnola, S.C. Mendes and the fine folks at Blood Bound Books for my copy.

A very solid 50’s style sci fi, horror creature feature. A small town with a big problem. A sheriff and his daughter with a compelling story and other well written characters. A plot and creatures very worthy of a great B movie.

First off, I am offering the author of YEITSO, Scott M. Baker (no relation…as far as we know), a public apology. He sent me this book months ago, but I am just now getting to the review. Yes, yes…I know everybody is busy, but even so, I don’t usually make people wait this long. So, Scott…sorry for dragging my feet on this one.

I can also state that YEITSO was definitely worth the wait. I’ve had the honor of reviewing four other titles from Baker’s bibliography, but this one is by far my favorite thus far. With this book, Baker has put himself in the running as an alpha male in the wolf pack of independent horror authors.

I love, love, LOVE creature-features, regardless of the media format in which they are presented. I’m good with books, movies, cartoons, pictographs, pretty much anything. And this one certainly delivers.

YEITSO is written very well, with Baker’s trademark style of succinct, efficient storytelling. This book seems to be the pinnacle of Baker’s writing abilities so far; his earlier works feel more raw, slightly unpolished…but this book showcases the maturity his writing style has attained.

The characters in YEITSO are believable and well fleshed-out. They are all damaged in some way, as are all human beings, which heightens the credibility of each and extends the realism. I particularly like the main character, Andrews; he is the quintessential protagonist for a story like this, but he’s also a likable, down-to-earth guy. He is obviously a caring father, which helps make him the perfect hero for me to read.

The story in YEITSO is riveting and curious, a mystery rife with intrigue and horror. I love the pacing of the book, as it reveals just what the reader needs to know in order to keep the suspense alive and the interest piqued. Baker’s mastery of this aspect is one of the true joys of his writing.

YEITSO is a major win for me, and I highly recommend it. The book is an effective thriller, but it also has a nice dose of gore. You can’t ask for much more out of a horror novel. The book is available now in a variety of formats.

Yeitso is an entertaining monster novel, set in a small town in New Mexico, where a sheriff must deal with discovering what is causing several mysterious deaths. Bodies have been found that appear to almost be boiled alive, though they were never exposed to water. Working with his officers, Sheriff Andrews is shocked to have a run in with an enormous deadly enemy, and that’s just the beginning of his issues.

I really liked this story, it felt a lot like an old school monster movie. The author takes the time to create likable characters that you root for, and really does a great job of creating chaos that kept me guessing about what was causing the deaths. The was a really entertaining story, with great characters and some pretty freaky monster scenes.

This book reminded me of the B Horror movie flicks we watched as kids on Saturday afternoons in the movie theater. Although I enjoyed it I found it predictable all the way through to the end. I would have liked some unexpected twists or turns in the story line some thing to throw the reader off balance.

Super-duper!!

Super story with a hell of a great ending! It is very similar to the sci-fi movies that my brother and I would go to watch in the late '50s. It was very hard to stop reading it. Enjoy
