This short story was previously in the anthology Chicks Kick Butt
It’s been more than four years since Abby Wade survived capture and torture by a quartet of rogue shifters. Back then she was a scared kid, just trying to survive.
Now Abby is all grown up, and if she’s learned anything from training with Faythe Sanders, the world’s first female Alpha, it’s that she can take care of herself—and anyone else who comes along. So when her college roommate is abducted from a campsite deep in the Appalachian woods, Abby knows exactly how to get her back…
The rules of the hunt are simple. Kill or be killed.

A resident of Oklahoma, Rachel Vincent has a BA in English and an overactive imagination, and consistently finds the latter to be more practical. She shares her workspace with two black cats (Kaci and Nyx) and her # 1 fan. Rachel is older than she looks-seriously-and younger than she feels, but remains convinced that for every day she spends writing, one more day will be added to her lifespan.
Anyone familiar with the.Price series by this author will recognise Abby from that series. Abby is a price alpha daughter one of the extremely rare natural both female cat shifters. While a teenager Abby was abducted and held in a cage, she was abused terribly during this time and was eventually rescued by Faythe Sanders. Abby has recovered from her ordeal for the.most part and managed to resume a normal life, she is attending college and making friends. Abby is invited by some.of.these new friends on a camping trip which she is pleased to accept (as it means she can let her cat out to run) unfortunately she is not the.only predator in these woods and the Hunter is about to become the hunted........................ Very short preview for the upcoming book Lions Share which deals with Abby and Jace but if you're like me and have to know everything it is a necessary part of the story as the events in this book are referenced in the next book.

I absolutely adore Rachel Vincet's Shifters series, I read it way back in 2010 and I still miss the world so as you can imagine I was incredibly excited when I heard that she was writing a new spin off paranormal romance series featuring some of the characters we've already met. The first book in the new Wildcats series, Lion's Share, is going to be published in February and features Abby and Jace as the main characters. I realised that I never read Abby's novella though so I thought this would be a great way to jump back into the world and get me even more excited for the new series. Hunt is actually a perfect crossover between the two series so I'd highly recommend picking it up if you haven't already.
Hunt is a short story set sometime after the ending of Alpha, I can't quite remember the timeline now but it's four years after we initially met Abby's character. Abby is living away from the rest of her pack while she studies at college and she's spending the weekend camping with her college friends when things go terribly wrong and her group is attacked by a bunch of humans. Abby knows fear, she was captured and tortured by rogue shifters as a young teen and there is no way she's going to sit back and let her friend's be terrorised by mere humans.
This may be short but Rachel Vincent packs a lot in and it was great to see how much Abby has grown since we first met her. She is able to put her fear to one side so that she can fight for her friends and it was great to see her kicking butt and taking names. We get a glimpse of her current alpha who just happens to be the lovely Jace and I really enjoyed the interactions between them, I have a feeling Abby is going to cause quite a bit of stress for Jace before she's finished!
I loved diving back into this world and Hunt has made me even more desperate to get my hands on Lion's Share. It's also made me really tempted to go back and reread the whole Shifters series.
I was psyched to be back in the SHIFTERS universe after such a prolonged break. I didn't remember much about Abby's character, but the Faythe & Jace bits were like getting a hug from an old friend. The protagonist's emotion fueled responses to a threatening situation led to some rash decisions which left me screaming at my eReader. Yes, Rachel Vincent managed to get that kind of reaction out of me in only 30-ish pages! I kept expecting Wade to be like Miss Sanders; however it took Faythe five books to become the beloved heroine that she is today, so I'm more than willing to keep an open mind with regards to her potential as the lead in the first installment of this author's WILDCATS spin-off series. This short was nearly perfect, and for a novella that's saying something! 4.5 stars
Rachel Vincent is a truly gifted author! Her writing has pulled me into the story EVERY SINGLE TIME I've read a book from her.
I've read the Shifter series years ago, yet when I started Hunt, it felt like it was only yesterday. The story felt familiar, it felt like home and I welcomed every single detail.
I LOVED this novella and I also LOVE the fact that there will be a spin-off series set into the Shifters world. I can't wait!!!
Abby thought it would be a chance to stretch her legs in her shifted form but when she takes off for a hike only to hear her friends being attacked she knows it’s not going to be what she expected. Returning to camp in her panther form Abby is surprised to see her friends being gutted open by a guy she knows from school. Abby has to act fast if she plans on saving any of them heading into battle in her panther form. While the fight stirs up only memories hopfully her training with Faythe will keep her alive.
I love the Shifters series it’s one of my all-time favorite shapshifter series because it’s not wolves. I knew I had to read Hunt because it’s more of the world I love plus the end of the novella has a teaser for her new series. While the novella is a quick story it’s action packed I completed it within a few short minutes before heading to bed for the night. While the story is short it gives us to see how Abby has grown since we last saw her and gives us just enough to be super excited for the new series and I can’t wait to read the new book. I’ve not read any of Rachel Vincent’s other books yet but I do hope to in the near future.
Hunt is a prequel to Rachel Vincent's upcoming new Shifters spinoff series, Wildcats. Yay! I loved Shifters and I'm thrilled she's decided to continue writing stories in that world, especially since Jace will be a main character.
Hunt reintroduces us to Faythe's cousin, Abby. It tells the story of how a camp trip with college friends goes wrong and sets up the scene for Lion's Share, the first book in Wildcats.
I'll pretty much read anything by Rachel Vincent, and this was no exception. It's a short story written in the world of the Shifter series, set four years after the incidents in Stray. Abby has become tougher, learning from her cousin Faythe and it pays off. It's a satisfying short story and the addition of a Lions Share snippet was enough to have me wiggling my toes with excitement for the first book in the Shifters spin off. I am so excited, I can't even put it into words!
I liked Abby when we first were introduced to her in Stray, but this Abby is even better than the one we’ve met before. Important side note: Yes, you really do need to read the entire series to be able to read this novella without spoilers for the conclusion.
Several years after her cruel caging, Abby is older and trekking through the forest with her human friends on a camping trip. When she decides to shift - privately of course - her friends are ambushed by human men, who make quick work of them but seem to actually be after Abby; it’s not entirely clear why, until the end.
I really enjoyed this slant on things - we haven’t really seen much interference from humans in the shifter world, so to finish it off with a novella which opens a new door ready for a potential new problem in Wildcats (the next series) was really fun. I often find novellas a bit pointless, more of a money oriented exercise for publishers, but actually this felt like a really nice link from Abby into a more formal role in a pride.
It’s made me excited for Wildcats in any case, and it was great to see what happened a bit later for Abby after the series concluded, along with a cameo from a beloved Shifter alongside her.
With Hunt, Rachel Vincent introduces fans to her new self-published project: a Shifters spin-off series. The Shifters books were about a young woman named Faythe, a strong and tenacious enforcer for her Pride. While Faythe’s story has concluded, there were other characters in the series that fans wanted to hear from – and so Vincent’s idea for the Wildcats series was born.
Hunt re-introduces us to Abby Wade, college sophomore, political science major, and wild cat Shifter. Abby is unwinding from a stressful term at school on a camping trip with friends when the unthinkable happens: their campsite is attacked and her friends are brutalized while Abby is out hunting in her wild cat form. Desperate to save her best friend Robyn from the same fate she suffered as a teen, Abby hunts her captors through the wilderness of the Appalachians. But what she finds when she catches up to them will change her world forever…
So, full disclosure: I have only read the first book in the Shifters series. I liked it, but it was pretty obvious to me where the love triangle was going to end up and I never got around to finishing the series. But Hunt breathes new life into the Shifter universe, re-introducing characters who may be familiar to long-time Vincent fans but who will also appeal to newbies. Based on what I saw in Hunt, this new series will be completely accessible to newcomers to the Shifters world. In the author’s note accompanying Hunt, Vincent describes the Wildcats series as follows:
The Wildcats books are paranormal romance novels set in the Shifters world. Each will be narrated by a new couple, beginning with Jace and Abby’s book, LION’S SHARE, which introduces a new concept – a Pride made up entirely of strays.
Let’s break that down. A new series of PNR books, each featuring a new couple…meaning no drawn-out romantic angst and no getting tired of one couple’s drama. If you read the Shifters series and felt that it wasn’t for you, I think the Wildcats books will change your tune. It’s been eight years since those books debuted, and Vincent has clearly come into her own as a writer. Tightly written action scenes coupled with a seamless introduction of complex world builing makes for a tantalizing glimpse of Vincent’s honed skills. And since this new Pride is going to be made up entirely of strays, the Wildcats series will undoubtedly further develop the Shifter world and introduce unique political problems over territory and status. The perfect challenge for a poli-sci major like Abby!
I can already tell there’s a lot to love about Abby a protagonist. While she’s still haunted by her own abduction and assault as a teen, Abby has grown into a capable young woman who will stop at nothing to mete out justice. Seeing Abby take her power back and fight for her friends was thrilling and I couldn’t get enough. She’s smart and tenacious, and she’s been trained by one of the best Alphas in the country – who also happens to be a badass lady. The events of Hunt will clearly drive her forward in Lion’s Share, and I for one cannot wait to see her bring the pain on the evil people who’ve been hurting innocents and hunting Shifters.
Recommended for fans of PNR, tightly-written suspense, and badass ladies. Keep your eyes peeled for Lion’s Share, releasing later this month!
So I did read Rachel Vincent's Hunt when it was first in the Chicks Kick Butt anthology, but this one was supposed to have a little extra fodder for the new series that will expand the Shifters world!! Though, I must admit, I could not bring myself to read the sneak peek into Lion's Share. I have this thing about samplers or sneak peeks, I can't stand them! While in theory, they are very kind and generous and awesome...I'm just one of those readers who wants to read the whole thing! In the past when I read said samplers and sneak peeks I was left reeling and drooling for more...with like a year's wait until the next one! Yeah, I've learned my lesson there!
Anyway, this little story takes place over four years since Stray and Abby is all grown up now. Though still haunted at times by what happened to her as a young teen. When she and her friends decide to go on a camping trip, the typical "nothing can go wrong" comes into play and the also typical, "everything goes wrong" happens! Abby's friends are attacked by a group of guys, but the thing is they are all human!
Now Abby has to find the remaining kidnappers and rescue her best friend, before Robyn meets the same fate as the others...or just as worse, meeting the fate Abby met when she was kidnapped.
Jace is there too as the Alpha and I have to say that I always liked Jace, just not for Faythe. I was a total Team Marc fan! I could see Abby and Jace being happy together...you know, once things get rolling after this.
It's possible the extra "fodder" I sensed was more connections between Abby and Jace. Though they don't have a lot of page time together, the time they were on the same pages there were these little hints, little instigators that are likely a precursor for Lion's Pride! Let's just hope that puppy--or should I be weird and say kitty?--gets released this month! Though, I am totally prepared to wait longer! I've waited this long for more Shifters books, I can wait some more too!
I have always been a fan of this series! Rachel Vincent is a breath of fresh air and her stories are magnificent! "Hunt" is everything a short storty should be and more! Action, adventure, strong back story, and a tough female protagonist.
Abby Wade has been through a lot in the last four years, since we've last seen her in Stray. She is out camping with her fellow collegians when shit hits the fan, and she is tossed back to her troubled past. She races against the clock to stop her friends from meeting the same fate as she did so many years before. With the help of her new, not to mention sexy, alpha Jace, she has to hurry to figure out what's going on in the woods and how to get get over her fears! I recommend this book to all paranormal romance readers!! It is an exellent read and kept me interested and on the edge of my seat until the end! ~5 stars~
Update: In the back of "Hunt" us readers discovered a new and exciting announcement!! Mrs. Vincent will be writing a New Adult Romance Series, a spin-off of the ever popular "Shifters" series!!!
(hold for applause)
That's right ladies and gentleman a New Adult Romance series called Wildcats! It takes place in the Shifters world and our old friends will be there as well. This novel revolves around the two main characters Abby Wade (Faythe's cousin from "Stray") and Jace ( from Shifters series, who is now an Alpha). Abby is off at college and lives on Jace's territory. The first chapter of the new Wildats Novel "Lion's Share" is in the back of "Hunt". So if you haven't ran out to purchase it yet jump on the band wagon and get to it people!! Also, for those of you who have read "Hunt" in the Chick Kick Butt anthology, it has been changed up a little and there is more to the story (about 2000 words). So read it already and get ready for the excitment!
Review Abby been through a lot in the last four years, both emotionally, mentally and physically. She was beaten, scarred and also raped against Rouge Strays that were after females tabbies including herself, her tabby friend Sara and cousin Faythe Sanders.
But now four years later, Abby have gain back her strength and is ready to face anything that comes her way but when the attack is too close to her past and way to inhumane she need to fight.
Either Kill or BE Killed . . .
Can Abby face the darkness against humans killers?
Here's a peek of what I had to say. "Are humans hunting more than just deers, bears, and turkeys or are they hunting for a much greater game of Hunters Vs Cat?"<?b>
This makes me very excited to return to the Shifter world that introduced me to Rachel Vincent years ago. This novella reintroduces us to Abby, one of the very few female tabbies in the world and her place in Jace's territory. She's in college now and still fights the demons from her past. Jace, now an alpha of his own territory, is Abby's alpha and while we don't get much about his personally in this novella since it's told from Abby's POV, I'm beyond excited to return to this world and get more about Jace. I admit, I wasn't a huge fan of Jace's in the previous books, only because I was shipping Faythe and Marc so hard, but I still wanted Jace to be happy - and now we get to see it unfold on page!!
This novella is a nice way to reconnect to a couple of characters we got to know years ago and it makes me excited to see what Vincent will bring to this spin off series. I can't wait to get back into this world with Lion's Share - out soon!!
I was so excited to hear that Rachel Vincent has decided to do a spin off series from her Shifter novels. I really loved that series and eagerly await more !!
This book Hunt was short and certainly sweet. Loved the preparation that this author has given us to the next full length book.
Loved the characters, the storyline and even though this was a short read it was worth every penny !!
Cant wait to read Jace's story , I always wanted a happy ending for him.
This is a short story/novella, and a good hint of the next series of Werecat Shifters. I'm liking the characters, because I met them in the previous series but now we are focused on learning about them and how they interact. I am looking forward to learning more about Abby and how she and Jace and their working relationship develop.
Finally! Rachel Vincent has returned to the shifter world! Abby!!! Then there's Jace!!!! He is the best!!! I can't wait to read their story in Lion's Share! This short story was just enough to entice me back into the world I loved so much.
I loved this short mainly because it was absolutely fantastic to catch up with old friends. I loved Jace in the series and I am ecstaticly happy that he is getting his own book. I can not wait! I will be scheduling a re-read of the entire series soon :)
I was very relieved that Abby didn't need to be rescued. At the start I was wondering and I was thinking oh please no! Nice novella to get back into the world. Haven't gotten "Lion's Share" yet, but I plan to.
I'm recycling my original review because I said all that needed to be said. On that note, I'm still so godsdamn excited that Ms. Vincent decided to expand on the Shifers world and give it a spin-off. I don't think I'll ever get enough in this world.
Original review: I loved Hunt, Shifters #6.5. It was great to see Abby come into her own after her tragic past. I felt such pride for her and then that returning lust when Jace walked onto the page. I was and will always be a Faythe and Marc shipper, but I loved Jace and am happy to see him again.
I'm beyond thrilled that Ms. Vincent is returning to the Shifters world with a spin-off series. It's been a long time since I've fangirled as hard as I did when I read the news yesterday. Shifters is one of my all-time favorite series and I can't wait for Lion's Share, the first book in the Wildcats series.
I am stoked that instead of following in the Shifters path and being urban fantasy, that Wildcats will be paranormal romance instead. Squee! With that in mind, I hope that means Kaycee and Manx will also get books! I'd love to read more about them as well. Thank you sooooo much, Rachel, for giving your old fans this gift of pure awesomeness! I'm sure I'll devour every single word of this spin-off series.
I am so happy to get round to reading this short story, the shifters series is one of my favourite series it’s nice to follow up on some characters on what happened after the last book Alpha. I wasn’t expecting the book to be so quick, I have read other short stories but I guess it’s because I am use to longer books lol 😆 either way, I did enjoy this little short story in Abby’s POV and that it’s been 4 years since what happened to her in the first shifter book Stray. I am also glad to see Jace is back! I always loved Jace & Marc but I always ended up picking Marc haha 🤣
The story was a little sad, but you could see the resemblance between Abby and Faythe. For example, Abby going to human school/college and having human friends. But then as you carry on reading to find out what Faythe found out, that even if you want to have a normal human life your pack and shifters will always be involved somehow. But in the book you also find out a little at how Abby has been coping since the book Stray. You also see how much Jace has changed too. I am super excited to get started with The Wildcats series, a sequel to the Shifters series! 😍 and see what everyone has been up to and what troubles that have to face x
Book Summary: It’s a short story that takes place in the Shifter world and it also starts off the Wildcats series. Abby is out camping with her college friends. She decides to shift and go on a “run” by herself when she hears her friends being attacked at the camp site. When she gets back she finds some hunters killing her friends. She attacks one of them but he cuts her front paw. The hunters take her roommate to a cabin in the woods. She shifts back to human form and goes after them armed with just knives. When she enters the cabin she realizes that it was all a trap to get her because they hunt were animals like her. She ends up killing them and freeing her friend. She had gone against her Alpha’s orders when she went after them to rescue her friend. Instead of being mad, her Alpha, Jace, offers her a job as an enforcer when she graduates from college.

Apparently I already read this short story in a collection Chicks Kick Butt! I have no recollection of this? This happened sometime in 2016. if my Goodreads review is to be believed... Anyway I liked this short story and it had me intrigued with introduction to a new series by an author I already love. This has given me a push to finish the Shifters series and maybe even give Lion's Share a try even though the cover is not something I find all that inviting...
really good! I love the character development, having Aby overcome her traumatic past and fight the new monsters life has thrown her way. Her single handed victory just dives in the message that even though she'd been completely helpless once, it doesn't mean she has top be helpless forever. Another great one for Rachel Vincent. So happy to know there is more.
Short bridge read with characters from the Pride/Stray shifter series, moving to different territory. Jace now alpha of his own territory and Abby grown up and finishing up college. Jace and Abby will be the H/H of 1st book. This short read is a little story about how Abby is becoming a potential badass enforcer, and a fitting mate for Jace.
