Broken for a Purpose will help you see that God is lovingly at work in the ordinary circumstances and heartaches of your life. Why do trials come your way? To mold and transform your heart so that His life can flow through—making you fruitful and useful to him! Drawing from her own walk with the Lord, Gisela Yohannan shares on finding strength in God's presence, overcoming seasons of testing, being real and more.
Originally written for the Asian mission field, the principles in these pages cross cultural boundaries and have a deep relevance for anyone who desires to follow Jesus.
Gisela Yohannan has ministered to thousands of Christian workers in many countries, teaching God’s Word with deep insight and practical life application. Gisela is married to well-known mission leader and author, K.P. Yohannan, who is the founder and international director of Gospel for Asia. She has written 4 books: Broken for a Purpose, Consider Your Call, Dear Sister and Let Me Walk with You.
I chose to read this book after bypassing it for several days. At first, I wasn't quite sure it was a book for me. It talked a lot about church (I stopped going when the rudest congregation made me feel so unworthy of being in their line of sight) and also about spreading the word about GOD (Jehovah's Witnesses immediately came to mind...They come to our door every summer).
I was a little thrown off by her not revealing, just a little would help, what caused her such agony, sleepless nights, and loss of appetite. So many men and women could relate, if only she open up just slightly. When bad things happen to many of us that we don't think we could bear the pain any longer, professionals like to throw out the label "clinically depressed" or "s/he could seriously harm themselves". Like her, we are too afraid of the condemnation of people around us. We feel all alone going through something we think we can't endure. She was big on being honest, and mentioning not saying anything is as good as a lie [maybe taken out of context. I apologize.].
However, this very profound book really opened my eyes to understanding the bible passages and how the passages relate just as much to us today as they did approximately two centuries before us. I've often heard the analogy of being made strong like iron in the blacksmith' s fire then being made into steel (I should have used the U.S. Navy Seals or the Marines).
You have to go through trials and tribulations in order to become stronger. Jesus went through so much in his short life, that we could never match. I really loved how she reminded us that GOD has so much more waiting for us in heaven than any amount of pride, owning material goods, or worshipping false gods ($$$$$$). Also that we should be willing to die for GOD, as true Christians. I wonder what that church congregation would think of those.
Every person who reads this book will all have different experiences and perspectives of their own. However, one thing most of us who have read this could agree on is that we all got something out of reading this book, and that it is very worth the read: if you are religious or not. If you find yourself gravitating toward this read, and you aren't quite sure why (like me), take it as a sign that you are meant to read this. You will NOT be disappointed. *I was given a free copy of this book to read and give my honest review.
While on Facebook today, the Spirit filled kindle had this book listed for free giveaway as of 12-29-14. Since the title spoke to my heart I went to the site and downloaded. Although I'm in the middle of another book, I decided to pause to read this short book of only 148 pages.
I adored the writer's analogy of the Holy Spirit as the teacher with us having our own individual curriculum based on a host of criteria. Such a beautiful breakdown for us to understand. Simple, but direct...no flowery/churchy cliches. Loved this approach to teaching. Very helpful, nicely done. The writer tells us the lessons/trials, etc we go through are to show His workmanship, completed, lacking nothing, truly a part of His body..."This will be the most important precious time ever when my Savior confesses me before His Father and all in heaven. How thankful I will be at that moment for my teacher, the Holy Spirit, and for every lesson in my textbook." A powerful statement. Reminds me of Paul telling the Romans that "the suffering of this time won't compare to the glory that shall be revealed." Kinda wanna thank God for His infinite wisdom. Makes you want to shout G L O R Y! "I will look at my Lord and realize the greatness of His love for me, to allow me to go through painful teaching so I can share the glory of His nature for all eternity."
Although a short book, I spent just as much, if not more, on this as I would a novel of 400 pages. I slowly read each word, highlighted the parts which jumped off the pages, meditated on the words, and absorb all I could in this book. I am thankful, beyond all measures, for this beautifully, inspired word from the heart of God on how our brokenness has a Godly purpose. This book will not disappoint. I believe it will accomplish all that this writer intended. This is one that must be shared with the body of Christ, especially in these times when it seems even the very elect may be deceived. What a blessing to have read such a glorious piece of teaching. Highly recommend this!
I found that God.spoke to my heart through your words and has shown me that I need to evaluate myself. your words speak true and I pray others will be blessed by reading this book. Thank you for sharing of yourself. God bless you.
This book was a real blessing to me, so sensitively written, full of wisdom and encouragement for believers who find themselves in a difficult season of life and trying to understand God's plan and purpose. Very easy to read and understand, I highly recommend this book.
Rich with the suffering, tears, and loving bluntness born of years of service to a faithful God, this little book is well worth the time. Gisela is the wife of K.P. Yohannan, founder of Gospel for Asia, and her life has been both rich and hard; this reality suffuses her beautiful writing.
Yet again I must say I don't believe in coincidences. All things happen for a reason. I just randomly chose to read this book to get back into my groove of reading and yet I was moved beyond my on understanding and comprehension.
The Book addresses the question that we don't want to ask God out of fear, feeling ungrateful, and more importantly who questions God? But I do hurt, I've gone through trials and tribulations. I struggle. But why? Even when I feel I am doing God's will and being faithful to him and his word I get punched in the gut by "life". Why?
Well this books lays out Why, through the Word of God, through the author's experience and through everyday layman's terms.
Now not only do I know why, I have a sense of resolve about my life, the challenges, and my relationship with God.
Broken for a Purpose has given me hope, renewed my faith, and provided me with a better understanding of the purpose of being broken.
One of my favorite quotes: "If I understand the truth and daily, consciously remember it, I will learn to view my trials, disappointments, persecutions and victories as opportunities for the Holy Spirit to build and mold my life."
I was provided with a free copy of this book so I could give an honest review.
Broken for a Purpose! - I am sure it will be and is a very helpful ebook for our spiritual lives!
I feel that this ebook should be rated as five stars for all the indebted info that this sister in Christ has share of her experiences with us readers! It's more than I ever figured this ebook would include. I am an EMHC in my parish which means I am blessed to give out Jesus or blessings to those who come forward to receive or I had been directed by one of the ushers to one or ones who need Jesus too but have a problem in going forth themselves to come through the line to receive, see? And I hope and are looking forward to being able to take the requisite steps needed to become a lector come next late summer or early fall to then be able to read God's holy word aloud at Mass(-es) that I may be assigned or asked to sub for someone who cannot make it to do their sacred job for God. I recommend this ebook for anyone who is a leader of any kind, or even one perhaps going I to being a servant of God in any public way/service or just to plain grow in Jesus. I received this ebook for free and in exchange I have now given an honest review of this ebook! Very good job Gisela! By Angela
Gisela Yohannan shares some of her personal struggles in her book, Broken for a Purpose. Whether it’s the struggle to forgive others or ask for forgiveness, or self-doubts about shortcomings and failures, she is open and honest about her struggles as a Christian and the good that comes of the struggle itself. For it is in the struggles that we are made more like Jesus.
God doesn’t give us difficulties to make us suffer. He gives us obstacles and challenges to shape us into the image of Christ. Our struggles have a purpose.
Gisela shares how she wrestled with her failures and faults, feeling unworthy to serve the Lord and teach other women. Then the Lord did something special to touch her heart.
I encourage you to read Broken for a Purpose to discover the many reasons God has for allowing us to go through difficult times. We are broken for a purpose.
This review, along with additional book quotes, first appeared on my blog, ChristyBower.com.
True hope is one of the hallmarks of Christianity. It is not the hope it all works out, or I hope John gets better, or even I hope I win the lottery. Those are false hope or wishful thinking. No, true hope is having a firm assurance that all the trials, difficulties and our pain have purpose. We do not suffer pointlessly as other do. We are broken for a purpose. We may not be able to see it when we are in the middle of our pain but we have hope in the middle of our pain. Like the author I can look back on some of the darkest days of my life and see the thread of hope that carried me through. How times when I was at my end and I thought it was too much and then that tiny bit of relief sent from God to carry me on. I found this book to be very reflective helping me see all the threads in my life that have put me here now. Highly recommended!
What a timely book for me to read right after having major surgery. I highly recommend this one for anyone facing major challenges in their life. If you're looking for some answers for renewing a right direction for your life, then this is the one for you. Reflecting on my present circumstances, I found the author's words encouraging, comforting and hopeful on every page. Sometimes when one is facing a very introspective moment or season, it does a soul some good to have a brighter light move us forward with a new perspective and future that is much bigger than our present situation. This makes a great gift and a must for home and church library. I loved it and highly recommend to friends!
The author help refresh your faith in again understanding the reason for the trial the brokenness you experienced and how God has allowed this to strength our faith as well as help others. She cause you to rethink the present journey you are taking as well as look back on how you may have handled past experiences. The verses of scripture and her examples of brokenness was inspiring to say the least. Very good for a Christian to read.
We forget too easily how inadequate we are. We are desperately helpless and totally dependent on God. We may not understand WHY but we can trust the Lord. He does know what is best for all of us. He is holy and trustworthy. The whole earth is full of God's glory. Let us live in a way that praises Him for all His marvelous works.
This is one of the best bible study books I have read. The author's style is very readable and her insights are very understandable and easy to relate to your own life. I found myself highlighting more than a few points that I'd like to go back to again. This book was truly inspired by God and the author's faith and commitment shine throughout.
Such a wonderful book. It felt like God was talking to me in some part of the book. I plan to discuss a few section with my Women Bible study group! I truly enjoyed reading this book and sorry it took me too long to finish... I look forward to the next one by the same author. May God bless you in all you do for HIM!
This is an excellent reminder that God really does work all things together for good to those who love Him and are called according to His purpose. However, this doesn't mean that everything we go through is good. We will face tragedy and heartache and pain and suffering, but God uses all these things to refine our faith and make us stronger.
Suffering is personal for each person, and when you suffer, your faith is tested. Faith has to be. The reason we suffer is for our maturity, so that the unimportant things will be taken away, and God will be all that is left. He is enough.
I enjoyed this book, and I love Gisela's honesty about her failures and struggles. I found her very relatable and was encouraged in my walk with the Lord.
A very helpful book ... Read it for insight into the why's and what for's of the challenges that God is allowing you to go through. You will be enlightened, empowered and encouraged!
