This must-read book is your guide to sensual self-awareness and deep-rooted sexual confidence. Young adult or senior citizen, male or female, it will leave you in awe of the power of human sexuality in our lives.
The twists and turns of human sexuality in this enjoyable read are a unique mix of cutting-edge science and memoir-like tales of personal and professional development.
“This is a must read for EVERYONE who loves SEX. As an ancient sexologist who has taught so many women about orgasms, this book is very special written by an "expert" who includes her own sexual history which makes it far more real for me.” - Betty Dodson, PhD, Celebrated Sexologist and author.
Many of us are hesitant to talk about what is really going on in our sex lives, especially when we feel unsure of ourselves or out of sync with our lover. That is not the case with author and reproductive physiologist Dr. Joanna Ellington, who uses brutal honesty, humor, and intelligence to share her own intimate story of sex from puberty to menopause in a way that ties research to real life experiences.
This valuable book takes on many of the controversial sex topics of today, often through the unique lens of andrology (the study of men). It candidly discusses teens and sex, solo masturbation within marriage, and how to find out why we just don’t feel like “doing it” anymore.
Part kitchen table talk with a trusted aunt, part fascinating lecture into the newest research on creating great sex. This book is easy to understand and will open your eyes to the latest medicine that even many physicians haven’t caught up on yet.
Dr. Joanna Ellington is a scientist, mother of 5 boys, and inventor with a PhD in reproductive physiology. She has appeared in National Geographic documentaries, been featured in national news, and has authored over 75 academic publications. She has been internationally recognized and received numerous awards for her research in sexual medicine and sperm physiology.
Joanna’s writing has been praised by Dr. Betty Dodson for its ability to make the science of sex real by tying research to real life experiences.
While she can talk about sex on national television, she is embarrassed to buy “personal items” at the store. Recognizing how we all feel empowered at times and ridiculous at others helps her share the science of sex through accessible, human stories. Her scientific work and personal life fuel one another. She has followed her passion to understand and share our human sexuality throughout her life, from the process of inventing a fertility-friendly personal lubricant to the study of her own Fallopian Tubes after surgery.
She lives on a ranch in Washington with her family, making her way through life, sex and intimacy. Her website is sexscienceandnature.com.
Excellent book, although the author is rather shameless in never missing an opportunity to promote Pre-Seed fertility friendly personal lube. But that does not subtract from the overall quality of the book in my opinion.
Ellington has a unique format for the book. She starts off each chapter with a look at her own life, at times with an honesty that is brutal, then she ties the rest of the chapter to the science of sex which will be in some way relevant to her personal narrative. The result is a book that is interesting and easy to read. In most cases she is telling you about a piece of road that she herself has walked along. She has a very interesting perspective on how sex enables love in long term monogamous relationships.
She has performed research and is an expert on the interaction of sperm and the fallopian tube which I found very interesting. She also gave me a fresh look at HRT. My opinion of HRT has been that it is best to be avoided, but Ellington provides some good arguments and interesting data to counter that opinion. It is certainly worth a second look. Ellington explains the mysteries of sex and across all ages with an emphasis on those trying to conceive and for menopausal women. I learned a few things, which is good for an old dog like me.
This book takes you through a fascinating journey of sexuality and science explained. I highly recommend it for anyone trying to improve their sex lives.
