October 8, 2014Thomas P. Culle wrote "Rock Springs: Growing up in a Coal Mining Town" in 2005. It was published by the Sweetwater County Museum Historical Foundation. Cullen said he wrote the book for his nephews to understand what his grandparents and his life was like. while he does a good job intertwining the details and facts of Rock Springs, he muddies his own memories with the people of the town.
Cullen opens his book with a history on the town of Rock Springs. After this brief history he turns the focus to his family history and his own memories.
The opening of the book contains many facts and details that are interesting about the town. Cullen keep the theme throughout the book. In his own a memory he gives many facts and details about the people and places he described. His memories easily paint a picture for the reader of the town and people that live therein.
On the other side his facts are great but not footnoted bringing in a questioning to their being actual facts. Along with this he struggles to separate his own memories from the people that live in the town. He also fails to add a connection with his people he brings into the book.
Overall his book bring the fascinating history to the city of Rock Springs. While his facts might not be exactly right they are an interesting read. I think Cullen succeeded in creating a book that will help his nephews create a connection with their family.
