This review is from: Evangeline: Pilot Episode: Gothic Mistress
Of The Dead (Kindle Edition)
(I do no leave a review until I have read two times.it's just a thing with me to ensure I've read correctly. I read the first for pleasure then re-read with the idea of reviewing)
Star rating = 4.
I can't give it any less than this, it truly does pique the readers interest leaving a feeling to the character of Evangeline and a curiosity as to her further depths. In just a few short pages we learn of her beauty, her style and an unexplored gentle kindness to her personality.
The descriptive portrayal of her 'client' I like.
I also like the simplicity of this scene and the possibilities it portrays.
The fact that stops this from reaching 5 stars is probably unfounded. The 'client' and I'm sorry to consistently refer to her this way but her name escapes me. I can picture her azure eyes and the semblance of a woman whose beauty is still evident despite her advanced years, but for some reason her name escapes me, I do think it's something like Mary but I'm not sure why....
Anyway, she comments on going to meet her vampire nephew. This for me is where I've cut out a star. The whole thing is written well but their are two thoughts that come to mind as a reader. Firstly, and actually least importantly, is the unusualness of stating vampire nephew as opposed to just nephew, it feels a little odd to me. I do however see the point as it hints at what's to come.
The second issue I held was the"No! Not another tru blood" I admit that this thought holds it basis purely on a beautiful medium/psychic and the mention of a vampire but the thought is still there.
For me personally it leaves me at something of a crossroads. I enjoyed the taster of Evangeline's character and would enjoy the development of her, however that nightly doubt I mentioned above is still there demanding refusal at an overplayed plot line.
As the two points fight it out a decision is made to purchase the next book, to hope my fears where unfounded and to give Mr Kelley a chance without me completely disregarding what has the 'bones' of great writing and character development.

I downloaded the Evangeline series because it was free and I like to support independent authors - I understand the struggle.

Although I think this needs some work, it is imaginative and hones in on a popular idea and for those who enjoy this genre would appreciate the beginnings of this story.

I give it three stars because it does need work in several areas but yes, it was an okay read and others may like to give it a chance.

great start

This is a wonderful prelude to a potentially exciting series.just enough to introduce the main character and give you a look at and into her. It's definitely worth the quick read to set up the stories ahead and get your attention so you want to read more. Highly recommended

A lot of grammar errors, and sometimes needless/repetitive description.
Evangeline is a Gothic grief counselor working only by night who is also a medium, she briefly contacts the husband of Mary from the beyond before Halloween.
