The Murder World survivors continue their infiltration of the Masters of Evil! And as Death Locket is forced to choose between killing Captain America or blowing her cover, the spotlight finally swings back around to the Runaways as something terrible happens to Chase, and Nico must deal with her newly resurrected evil ex-boyfriend, Alex! All the character journeys that began in Avengers Academy and Avengers Undercover come to a stunning conclusion here when Hazmat finds herself working for Madame Masque, Mystique and Sabretooth; Justice arrives at Baron Zemo's super-villain city for a showdown with the undercover heroes; and S.H.I.E.L.D. and the Avengers attack as Zemo's true plan is revealed! Whose side will the Murder World survivors pick? Who becomes a Master of Evil? It all ends here!

Unfortunately, the whole "undercover" thing never really happens, doubtless because the comic got cut short, to half its length. So, the kids are "embedded", but there's never a real purpose to it, and that hurts the comic.
With that said, the first three issues of Undercover include the same great writing that was found in Arena and Undercover previously. We get great characterization of multiple people, surprises, and lots of fun. That breaks down when things have to be suddenly be tied up in the last two issues, but they're still an interesting finale to the series that manages not to undercut what's come before.
Now I'd like a new teen heroes in the Marvel Universe series, please. There are just too many great people at this point to not write more about them.
Gotta agree with the A.V. Club's review on the last issue:
A tense exploration of teenage morality and responsibility.
The first four issues in this volume explores the impression of bad influences on teenagers despite the absolute fun it promises. Yes, we may enjoy the forbidden fruit but there is always a limit at which we decide to stop. Just look at the case of Becca as opposed to the other Murder World survivors.
Again, the artwork is great. I hope to read more material involving Nico and Hazmat with their awesome power-ups. The ending was a bit too deus ex machina for me with Cammi suddenly saving everyone and paving the way for the grown-ups to pardon the kids. Cammi. An ordinary human. With an attitude. And a space gun. Plus don't get me started with what happened to Nico! She's awesome, yes, but her sub-plot with her dead-ex-boyfriend-brought-back-from-the-grave could have been handled with a bit more finesse. They just made them look like a hook-up. Anyway, in relation of Cammi's miraculous rescue, EVERYONE ELSE LOOKED LIKE A FREAKIN' EXTRA TO THE OVERALL PLOT. TinTin OUT.
A very satisfying conclusion to the series. Dennis Hopeless somehow pulled off two ridiculous gimmicks flawlessly in Arena and Undercover. The art suffers a bit in this volume for the two issues drawn by Timothy Green II, but Kev Walker and Tigh Walker were great for the rest of it. I wish the series could've ran for its intended 12-15 issues, because we do get some loose ends on the last issue that, as far as I know, never get resolved, but overall it didn't feel rushed or half-assed in any way due to the fast pace of the series since Arena. Really fun couple of series, I might go read Avengers Academy next, since I really liked Hazmat.
Well, that was uneventful. The problem with writing for the trade is that, instead of getting a year's worth of single-issue stories, all we get are two arcs. It took all of the last volume to get to the undercover part, so now we have to skip to the end. There's a time jump, the kids are entrenched in the Masters of Evil and they try to set up a sneak attack by the Avengers, but of course this was Zemo's plan all along.
This was okay. The writer didn't give himself a lot of time to accomplish anything. When there's a classic like Sleeper out there, this would have to do something new and different, but it doesn't.
Reprints Issues #6-10. This started out by engaging me with the character development and interactions (seven young Avengers learning how to fight, be a team, handle romance, etc) and then devolved into less interesting big battles in the last two issues. The team pretends to be part of Zemo's Masters Of Evil to foil his plans, but not before he commandeers a S.H.I.E.L.D. helicarrier. A ton of characters before it's all over. Better than average overall. THREE & ONE-HALF STARS.
The young superheroes get further involved with Zemo. This is a real page turner of a book, the plot runs along, and you care about the characters. I really enjoyed this, with its twists and turns, some were totally unexpected. Such a shame that these characters stories end with this volume. A really good read.
Pretty good conclusion all things considered. It makes you wish it would have had the additional issues, but the ending does not actually feel rushed. At the end, the heads of all the academies come to try to help the students. I thought the teenage issues were handled in a way that was not overly cheesy.
Ta kráva tam neměla vůbec co dělat (ON ostatně taky ne) a děsně trapně všechno zachrání?
A desátej sešit budu ignorovat.
This was pretty disappointing. Idk if production got cut short, or if it was just a rush finish, but this was a pretty unimpressive conclusion.
And what the frick is up with Death Locket? I mentioned this in my review of vol 1, but this volume makes her look like shes easily in her twenties, when AA (which took place 3-6 months prior) portrays her as like 12, at the oldest.
Whatever. Reading this is like living your whole life trying to do the right thing, trying to be the hero, only to realize that you've been the villain the whole time.
This book wasn't all bad, it just could have been a lot better.
I have been disappointed with this series, as well as Avengers Arena before it. It took characters that I cared a great deal about and proceeded to kill or majorly alter them. That continues here, with a volume that compresses what must have been intended as a couple further volumes. Since I didn't enjoy the story but care about the characters, that at least spares me from having to read more of what felt to me like pulling teeth. While there are some interesting ideas about how young people are influenced by their surroundings, I really didn't find many of the characters reactions particularly believable. So, despite not enjoying the read, I guess some of the characters I care about (mostly Runaways, though I also like the Young Avengers characters) have changed, and for my part, at least it is over.
The conclusion of Avengers Undercover lacks the depth that it set itself up with. It's hard to blame the team for this; it turns out the series was cancelled much earlier than planned and they were forced to wrap things up as fast as possible. With this in mind I think they did an excellent job of touching on all the bases and giving the ending they had planned. It's not anywhere near as intricate or detailed as you would hope, leaving many of the more interesting plotlines and character development arcs to get shelved and never quite touched on again, but the elements are there at least. The team did a good job considering everything, but the series will most likely leave you wanting more than they could give.
An odd graphic novel that follows Avengers Arena. Avengers Arena was written in a style similar to Battle Royale or Hunger Games. In this sequel, the characters who survived track down the evil genius who forced them into a deadly game and murder him. They then need to earn their forgivness, and decide to go undercover in a conspiracy of supervillains, hoping to bring it down from inside. The plot doesn’t hold together, and it wraps up too conveniently. There are some great comics out there, so why read this one?
Unlike other reviewers I don't feel like it felt too rushed-sometimes it's nice to have a series wrap up in a few volumes. Avengers Arena did the same thing. At the same time, it couldn't exactly bring closure to all the characters and some of them deserve to be followed around a little bit more. Also, Death Locket-why the rapid aging and changing skin color? Hopefully she shows up again somewhere.
Cool story, plot twists galore. Lots of cameos from Avengers, other members of Young Avengers, Runaways, etc. And more B-list and C-list villains than you can shake a stick at. (Btw, when did Daimon Hellstrom become a full-on bad guy?) My only two complaints are that 1) this was way too short. And 2) Tigh Walker's art on issues 8 and 10. So bad, so rough and unfinished. Gives Mike Allred some competition for "worst artist working for Marvel ".
I ended up enjoying Avengers Arena, but wasn't satisfied until I finished Undercover. The covers are atrocious and the artist changes each issue... But I still really enjoyed reading it and love these characters. The plot is obviously rushed, but in this case I won't begrudge because I think the story could have easily stalled out otherwise.
A solid but disappointing run to an otherwise stellar series. Hopeless manages to scramble together a good climax and conclusion, but you can imagine how great this could have been with more room to breathe.
Started off well, but got worse and worse as it went on, from the art to the story, which ends very quickly and in such a way as to make very little sense (almost like a television show that gets unexpectedly canceled and then tries to sum up years' worth of stuff in a single episode).
The whole thing is dissatisfying in ways that are partly intentional and partly unintentional. I was kind of troubled by some of the (accidental?) identity politics here and in Avengers Arena.
As the survivors of Murderworld try to infiltrate the Masters of Evil and take down their leader, Baron Zemo, they come face-to-face with Captain America and the rest of The Avengers. It's a decent, albeit, a little rushed, conclusion to this follow-up series to Avengers Arena.
Descent, but a let down of an ending coming off of Avengers Arena and the first vol. of Underground. Reeks of editorial influence and early cancelation.
