Until the Ink Dries

Rate this book
In the world of tattoos, once the ink dries, there’s no going back.

Returning to her hometown for a class reunion was supposed to be a brief escape for Willow. A chance to breathe between the cracks of her carefully constructed life and the relationship she left hanging in limbo.

Benjamin Davis knows permanence. It’s in every line he draws at his tattoo studio and in the promises he keeps to his daughter. His life is structured, stable, and predictably imperfect.

When they cross paths at a local bar, neither expects the immediate pull between them—or the impossible choice it presents. Some marks fade with time, while others become part of who you are. The question which kind will they leave on each other?

So, uh, Until the Ink Dries. Lets talk about it. I hate to say it but, I didn’t like this book and I really wanted to. But, it just didn’t give what everyone said it gave.

Willow is unhappy in her relationship because, she feels like she’s lost herself. Her boyfriend’s mama has managed to make her feel insecure about her natural hair so, to make him happy, she starts wearing it straight. When Ellis does the unthinkable, Willow has finally had enough of him and his disrespectful azz mama and puts a pin in their relationship. She packs her bags and catches the first thing smokin’ to her hometown to try to get back to the Willow she know and loves.

Benny made the mistake of goin’ half on a baby with someone who refuses to believe he’s just not that into her. Five years later, he’s a single dad to a precocious five year old little girl and he’s still tryin’ to convince Tierra he’s just not that into her. After having a bad day of dealing with his erratic baby mama, Benny’s best friend convinces him to go to their 10-year high school class reunion. When he and Willow run into each other, sparks don’t immediately fly oh but when they do, things get heated expeditiously in Rose Haven.

I had some serious issues with these characters. I wouldn’t say I disliked them but, they made some questionable choices that had me givin’ them a stern side eye. 😒😒😒😒 Lets start with Willow. The entire crux of her problem with Ellis was that, she felt like she couldn’t be her true self in their relationship. By that, she meant not wearing her natural hair without being criticize and shamed by his mama. Which was the whole reason she started straitening it. But, when Willow goes home to Rose Haven, she continued to wear her silk press. Color me confused but, the whole point of her goin’ home was so she could be her true authentic self right?!!! So, why was she still rockin’ the silk press?!!! She started wearin’ her natural curls only after her hair got wet during the picnic. By then, she had already been home a couple of weeks or longer. Okay Ms. I Don’t Know Who I Am Anymore. 🙄

And, Benny just pissed me off. Why was he tryin’ to force a relationship with Tierra and Charlie when she didn’t even want Charlie to begin with?!!! When she realized a baby wasn’t going to make Benny love her, Tierra handed Charlie over and dipped without looking back. He allowed her to come in and out of that child’s life for five years disrupting her peace and mental health. Even after everyone told him he need to cut Tierra out of Charlie’s life, he refused to listen. This mofo had the audacity to fix his lips and say, “His heart and his head weren’t on the same accord.” Ninja! On top of her erratic and violent behavior, Tierra was a drug addict and an alcoholic. This is who you want around your kid?!!! Benny’s willful ignorance pissed me off to the highest of pisstivity. 🤬🤬🤬🤬 There were other issues at play with this book as well. I thought it was lowkey boring and poorly written (I have my thoughts on that). If I’m keepin’ it a buck, the only thing I liked about this book was Lil Miss Charlie. She was the saving grace for me and the only reason I didn’t DNF it. I think this will be my last collaborative read. I’ll stick with books that are written by just one author.

I really enjoyed Benjamin & Willow’s story! They were experiencing some relatable & real life situations that many of us can see ourselves in. Although I definitely would’ve handled my situation’s better than they did lol. One highlight for me was both Willow and Benjamin’s relationship with their parents. I love seeing healthy relationships, and longevity in black families even when their adult kids don’t fully have it together. The narration in the audiobook was amazing, Winston James can simply do no wrong and Alyx Monroe did a great job as well. Overall I enjoyed the story and audiobook experience. Thank you NetGalley & Dreamscape Media for a listening copy.

This was a really good three-star read. I loved the realistic portrayal of masculinity in Benny, he was both soft and strong, which we don’t get enough of, so tea. That alone made the story feel grounded and sincere. Other than that, it wasn’t particularly groundbreaking or doing anything radically new, but it didn’t need to. It was emotionally honest, well paced, and definitely worth reading if you’re in the mood for something thoughtful and tender rather than flashy.

Oh and of course the narrators were just perfect👏🏽

The first book I read by Kimberly Brown was Fever: Love in Scrubs. Loved it. There are many parallels to this book and that one (single father with primary custody of his child + single understanding woman + harmful biological mother of the child). Kimberly, I hope this is fiction and that you are okay. (I also read Stat: Love in Scrubs by Iesha Bree. Until the Ink Dries was written by both authors, but I'm comparing the story to Fever because that's what came to mind while reading this.)

*spoilers*

The reason I liked this book less than Fever was because the MMC wasn't in love with the woman he accidentally got pregnant--more specifically, he made her have his child even though she stated clearly that she didn't want to have a baby, and he tried to force her to have a relationship with the child that she clearly didn't want, therefore endangering his child and fucking with his child's feelings. The only reason the birth mother went through with it was bc she thought giving him a baby would keep him, when he wanted nothing to do with her. Wtf Benny? He said she had major postpartum after giving birth but that led to alcoholism and drugs. Things could've been prevented at least by adoption or just not forcing a relationship between mother and unwanted daughter. And then the birth mother still wants to be with Benny and the drugs have gotten stronger, so it's a clusterfuck. Naturally, the FMC is the opposite of the child's mother as she loves children, consoles the child over the relationship with the birth mom, and becomes the missing piece to their family to make it whole. It was the same story as Fever but a slightly different circumstance with the father's relationship to the birth mother.

Overall, I'd give this book 3.25 stars. The writing was good, the story progressed nicely, and the relationship between Willow and Benny developed naturally and sweetly. I really loved the relationships that Willow and Benny had with their parents, they both saw what healthy marriages look like and what good parents look like. However, I had a lot of issues with Benny. He was supposed to be Charlie's biggest advocate and supporter, but he felt CPS at times, giving the mother every chance at reunification even when she does nothing but hurt Charlie. I understand wanting to have a mother in your daughter's life, but goodness dude, she was SOOOO TOXIC, why would you even give her the chance to be around Charlie? UGH.

Willow met Charlie pretty on in the book and they developed a sweet relationship right off the bat. There's not a "right" way to introduce a significant other to your child, but I liked that Willow and Charlie's relationship felt organic and not forced. This also helped Benny with not having to worry about if whatever woman he brought home to meet Charlie would've gotten along with her.

*Friends to lovers
*Single dad

Format: audiobook (narrated by Alyx Monroe and Winston James)

Family is what you make it!

This book left me feeling conflicted because while I enjoyed the romance between Willow and Benny, I didn't understand Benny at all in regard to the situation with his child's mother. Willow comes back to her hometown to find herself again after telling her boyfriend she wants a break, and Benny is a local tattoo artist raising his small daughter Charlie. The found family aspect of this book warmed my heart. I love the grumpy/sunshine dynamic, and Benny was definitely grumpy or, at the very least, very stoic. Willow definitely brought some joy into his and Charlie's lives, especially with that horrible mama of hers still lurking around. Now this is where the book loses some of its steam for me because Benny and his logic made no sense to me. He loved Charlie so much but decided to keep traumatizing her with her addicted mother's presence despite everyone telling him he should cut her out of the picture. Now I understand wanting Charlie to have a mother, but he could clearly see that it was doing more harm than good, and as a result Charlie was almost really harmed; this could have all been avoided and really pissed me off.

"I guess I locked you in before the ink dried huh?"

Thank you so much to Libro.fm for this ALC! UGhhhh Winston and Alyx gone do it for me everytimeeeee YES MAAM!!!

Yall I loved this audio. Willow and Ben??? The CHEMISTRY????? WOWWWWWWWWWWW omg. Kimberly knows how to write two people in love I'll tell you that!! This honestly was so good. I loved the premise of Willow deciding that she had had enough, and putting her foot down to find out what she wanted out of romance. I love the way her and Ben came together, and how Charlie and Willow interacted.

I'm glad Charlies mama ended up exactly where she needed to be, because otherwise- TUH! The way my heart broke in two for Charlie and the way she just wanted her mom to love her, but I'm glad she ended up with Willow in her corner for her.

I legit have no notes or anything I would have changed about this. Single Dad romances gone do it for me ERRRRRY time! Also random, but I loved how Ben was in a motorcycle club but it wasnt his entire personality. He was very well rounded and honestly such a good dad to Charlie. 10/10!!!

Highly recommend if you need something romantic, feet kicking and giggle worthy.

Tender and emotional, the chemistry was immediate. Willow coming back home trying to breathe through the chaos of her life, and Benjamin being a tattoo artist and a devoted father just made him even better (I love a good single father trope).

Didn't WOW Me

Separately, I like both of these authors so I was expecting their combined work to have me complete sucked in. Unfortunately, it did not. Unpopular opinion, the way Willow handled Ellis seemed over the top harsh. We get it, you don't like him anymore, cool. Break up and be done. The back and forth banter felt unnecessary. Then Benny putting up with all of Tierra's shenanigans for as long as he did while literally just crying about it, started to irk my nerves. That man had a friend who was a literal millionaire, for as much as he professed his love for Charlie, he could have hired security, an attorney, heck even a hit man to handle this situation before chapter 2 even started. To drag it out for 20+ chapters was overkill. While my heart broke for the way Charlie was left feeling because of the poor decisions adults around her made, that was about the only thing that invoked real emotions about these characters. Willow and Benny were just lukewarm MC's to me. I was much more interested in what Shy and Jordyn were doing. Overall, these characters nor their storyline wow'd me.

Umm.. where is the next book?!

I ate this story up! Small town, single dad, drama from both exes.. I loved it. I was cackling when Willow started reading the peasants she allowed in her life for filth. Benny needs no words because we stan a single girl dad over here.. he’s a man baby! Shira and Jordan — where’s the book? This was an easy read with a lot of short chapters but it gave me the feels for sure. Main characters and side characters, everyone felt significant and added their own thing to the story. I loved it!

This audiobook? Absolutely everything. I went in expecting a solid romance, but what I got was layered, emotional, and unforgettable.

✨ What I Loved:
- Seeing a Black masculine man (Benjamin Davis) openly cry and be vulnerable without ridicule? Groundbreaking. His friends and his girlfriend (Willow) embraced it, and it felt so affirming. More of this in romance, please.
- Willow’s journey was so relatable. She started off with a man who wanted her to erase herself to fit his mold (ugh, the audacity). She stuck it out too long, but when she finally walked away, I was cheering. Her “meet-cute” with Benjamin wasn’t cute at all it was messy, awkward, and real. And that’s why it worked.
- The family dynamics hit hard. Benjamin’s daughter’s mother struggled with addiction, and the book didn’t shy away from the truth that healing has to be self-driven. Instead of idealizing motherhood, the story flipped the script Benjamin stepped up as the caretaker, loving his daughter fiercely and consistently. That reversal was powerful and refreshing.
- Found family, friendship, and support systems shine throughout. Whether it’s friends, partners, or chosen family, the book reminds us that the people who show up for you in the hard times are the ones who matter.

🎧 Audiobook Vibes:
The narration? Spot-on. The pacing? Perfect. The emotional beats? Delivered. Honestly, this is one of those listens you’ll want to replay because it’s layered, heartfelt, and just plain good.

💬 Final Word:
This isn’t just a romance it’s a story about love, resilience, and community. It’s messy, it’s real, and it’s beautifully done. Five out of five stars, no hesitation.

I received this audiobook from Netgalley for free in exchange for an honest review. All opinions stated are my own and left voluntarily.

First let me just say little Charlie was the star of this book. While she was a little spoiled she was still cute and definitely somewhat of a matchmaker when it came to Benny and Willow. Now these two had a connection that they couldn't see at first and Willow wasn't trying to get into anything serious after coming back home for a reset but the more time they crossed each others paths and the more time they spent together it was undeniable. I liked watching the romance with this two; however, I felt it took too long to get there. I don't mind slow burns but there were way too many details that I found rather unnecessary that didn't add to the story but rather took away from what was building between Benny and Willow.

Also, I felt Benny was way too lenient with his baby mama. The first time she showed up and acted out she would have been out but he gave her too many chances and tried to force a relationship she didn't want which she shouldn't have had anyway given her current situation. The fact that she kept coming around and nothing was happening to stop her was a little annoying.

The ending of the book was a little predictable to me and the last line was a tad bit corny. Overall, the book was okay but didn't fully deliver the way I hoped it would.

oh this was too good. two people who needed love found it within each other. Charlie was the star of the show, and the side characters funny as hell! loved this one.

Now I didn’t like Benny tryna force that woman to be a mother, like let it goooo but on the other hand i guess I get it but I digress.

Willow and Ben

This was the collaboration I didn’t know I needed.
Willow and Ben had always known of each other, but had never connected on a deeper level. Once they did, the chemistry was undeniable. Their bond felt authentic, magnetic, and perfectly timed. The relationship wasn’t just romantic, it was healing. They became exactly what the other was missing. I loved every moment of their journey and how it unfolded in Rose Haven. I’m hoping this is just the beginning because I definitely want more stories from this world.

When I say, I love a good small town romance, this is what I mean. give me small town and then make it all black. This was the sweetest most beautifully written slow burn that burns so good. First off. Charlie stole. The show stole the show in every scene that little girl was so sweet spoiled rotten but so sweet Benjamin what a man I mean he was a loving father. He was so open and honest his communication skills were top-tier and I like how easily he was able to express his emotions. Willow coming off of the absolutely worse relationship she could’ve been in found her way back to herself. The way that their love story unfolded was so natural.

Ellis and his ugly ass mama can catch these hands. Tierra could catch these hands because she was just delusional and for why. Like you have a daughter who wants nothing but love from you and you can’t even find it in you to love the one person who came from you I don’t even understand it. She ended up where she exactly needed to end up. There is literally nothing missing from this book Kimberly Brown and Iesha Bree are just two of the most amazing writers in the game… I stand 10 toes down that their pens are always golden blessed by the heavens.

Until the Ink Dries is a quick, easy to read book that certainly had its beautiful moments and offered comfortable lightheartedness, even amidst more serious topics. It comes with very wholesome and strong characters, conflicts that worked so well because of how real they are and a lot of fun moments to balance it. I very much enjoyed this book particularly for its strong characters.

PLOT
The story offered a great insight into various aspects of lived realities that I am a stranger to and, although a romance, focused the conflicts on outside factors rather than fabricating arcs for character or relationship development.

While I like the feeling of being seen by a book, reading wouldn’t be half as valuable in my opinion if it didn’t let me experience what I never have in reality. The strong family ties, the focus on a child, even the incredible, unapologetic sense of self worth - the book allowed me to fall into this life and find parallels I didn’t expect.

These themes also made for a great composition as they all influenced one another and remained relevant throughout the entire story.

I also am aware that I haven’t done enough to ensure authentic representation of POC and Black stories in my own reading. Until the Ink Dries felt like an amazing read in this regard as it is set around Black characters within a Black community and lived experience, another reality I have never and will never live.

It allowed for a glimpse and invited in other perspectives
while keeping the focus where it belongs: on specific themes and conflicts with unique nuances. And without catering to anyone else’s needs.

CHARACTERS
It was refreshing to read about characters, particularly the FMC, that have such a healthy grasp on their own worth and know how to stand for it, but also how to extend their grace towards others.

I firmly believe that it is books like this that paint a picture of what a healthy relationship with oneself can look like, helping reshape learned patterns without demanding it. This is true for both the FMC’s and MMC’s story, by the way.

One thing I personally had a bit of an issue with was the MMC’s stance towards the baby mama’s decision during pregnancy.

It is something I don’t personally agree with but it was a small enough mention that I have enough freedom of interpretation to assume it was only a glimpse of a nuanced character. Especially since the situation this referred to happened off page and before the story takes place.

An aspect I have to give major plus points for is the daughter. So often I see kids in books written as nothing but props, their only objective to add a layer of cuteness or offer the framework for conflict.

While this character still contributed to the plot development and certain conflicts, it was not what made her. The daughter was such a well written character with a distinguishable personality that felt age appropriate. She was endearing without being dehumanized or reduced to childish/childlike stereotypes.

WRITING
Overall, I enjoyed the writing and it matched the story very well. It met the tone and found the balance between easily enjoyable/approachable and still developed without overdoing anything.

Occasionally, there were moments that had me stumble a bit, though. Some sentences felt a tad clumsy, using the same word two or three times and in a way that seemed a bit unfortunate.

I feel like these could easily have been rephrased to make the reading experience a bit smoother.

There was also at least one situation where we saw one character’s POV of things, only to then experience the entire thing again from the other character’s perspective. This is something, while valid depending on the situation, I personally struggle with in books.

As for the audio version: I really enjoyed the narrators and think they did an amazing job! At times, the scenes didn’t seem correctly cut but I assume that this might be due to me listening to the ALC, not the final version, so it doesn’t affect my rating.

3.75 - Thank you, NetGalley, Dreamscape Media, and the authors for my gifted copy. The audiobook will be released on December 16, 2025.

Let’s start with the narrators. Winston James and Alyx Monroe did an incredible job. My only concern was that Winston’s narration sounded clearer and crisper than Alyx’s. I had to adjust the volume of her parts slightly.

Now, let’s talk about the story. I absolutely love Willow and Benny together. She brought immense joy and happiness into his life. For her, she finally experienced what it means to have a man who accepts her completely. Willow’s ex-boyfriend manipulated her, and it was time for her to rediscover herself. There’s nothing quite like the comfort of home.

There were several moments that made me smile, tugged at my heartstrings, and even yelled, “You better tell ‘em!” Here are a few examples:

- Miss Charlie’s unapologetic love for her snacks.
-The “get your act together” conversation Willow’s mother had with her.
- Willow’s outburst at Tierra and her ex-boyfriend’s mother.
- The heartwarming movie scene in the park.

However, there were a few instances where the story could have been improved. For instance, Willow talks about her hair, and you would expect her to want to change it as soon as she gets home. But instead, she snaps when her current hairstyle is mentioned. It only changes after she gets caught in the rain and returns to its natural curl. At that moment, I couldn’t help but raise an eyebrow. It seemed strange because she had been home for some time. It would have been more believable if it had been a comforting change.

Now, let’s talk about Benny. If the roles were reversed, Tierra would have had his head. I understand the desire for a child to have a strong bond with their mother. However, when the mother is Tierra, why? She has consistently shown and expressed that Charlie has never and will never be loved by her. Allowing Tierra to exploit their emotions for so long almost resulted in the loss of that baby and good people. It would have been more realistic to have read a backstory that showed Benny already dealing with Tierra’s manipulative behavior.

Lastly, their chemistry was electrifying. Benny was talking that talk, baby. They shared a beautiful and comfortable connection, a type of love where it’s easy to be yourself. It’s a solid book, but it had the potential to be even better.

Okay but listen. Until the Ink Dries was such a solid win for me.

This was my first Iesha Bree read and I was immediately locked in — she and Kimberly Brown together have gained a fan! Single dads and step daddies have been absolutely carrying romance lately and Benjamin just slid right into that hall of fame. Watching him show up for his daughter Charlie, protect her heart, and navigate the pain of a mother who chooses absence hit harder than I expected. His love for his child felt real, intentional, and deeply rooted and that alone made me care about everything else that unfolded.

Willow choosing herself though? Whew. That spoke VOLUMES. There is nothing more powerful than realizing you are not meant to be someone’s accessory or image booster. Her journey of reclaiming her worth and stepping away from what no longer served her felt grounding and honest. When her path collided with Benjamin’s, it was unexpected but exactly what both of them needed. Their connection grew naturally, with tenderness, healing, and emotional maturity that made every interaction feel earned.

This story is heartfelt, romantic, and full of quiet strength. It is about love, family, choosing yourself, and finding something beautiful where you least expect it. If you love emotionally rich romance with strong parental themes and characters who feel human, this one deserves a spot on your list. I absolutely recommend it.

3.5 ⭐'s rounded up

The pace was good. I did struggle to connect with the characters especially Benny because I just could not understand why he even tried to have Charlie's mother even be a part of her life because she definitely did not deserve to be in her life. She could not even face her child and ran away when she say her. It was so heartbreaking for Charlie.

I did love that both Benny and Willow had amazing parents that showed their children what a healthy relationship looks like and that it is possible to have it. I was really happy when Willow left her relationship in the beginning because you could definitely tell that he was very self-centered and did not think about what Willow wanted at all. I also think that her leaving and going to see her parents helped her to realize that her relationship was not healthy for her.

Benny and Willow's reconnecting was a struggle at first because they were sensitive to what the other one had to say. However once their relationship got moving the right direction, I really enjoyed them as a couple.

Winston James and Alyx Monroe made you feel the emotions that the characters were going through. Thank you NetGalley and Dreamscape Media for the early access to this audiobook. All of my opinions are my own.

* ALC Review *The audiobook for Until the Ink Dries written by Kimberly Brown & Iesha Bree and narrated by Alyx & Winston is a good story with good narration.

An unwanted proposal makes Willow realize that she has the starring role in a life she doesn’t want. She decides that time away in Rose Haven, the small town that made her, will give the break and clarity she needs.

Benjamin Davis is a life long Rose Haven resident and long time Willow admirer. He drinks his water, minds his business and runs the local tattoo shop. His world revolves around his adorable 5yo daughter Charlie.

As Ben & Willow lean into their obvious attraction and begin to trust each other, it becomes harder and harder to see a world without the other in it. And If little Miss Charlie has her way, they will all get their HEA together!

Until the Ink Dries is a beautifully written love story about timing, permanence, and choosing what truly matters. Willow and Benjamin’s connection feels organic and deeply emotional—rooted in longing, responsibility, and the kind of attraction that sneaks up on you and refuses to let go.

Benjamin’s role as a devoted father adds a layer of tenderness and depth that makes him impossible not to love… even if his baby mama tested my patience the entire time 😒. The audiobook narration by Winston James and Alex Monroe brings warmth and authenticity to the story, making the emotions hit just right. Thoughtful, heartfelt, and quietly powerful, this is the kind of romance that lingers long after the final chapter.

⭐️ALC REVIEW⭐️
This audiobook was great! It’s dual narration, and both narrators were awesome. I usually worry about narrators switching voices for opposite parts, but it wasn’t annoying at all. The only part that made me laugh was when the male narrator did his daughter’s voice but honestly, it didn’t take away from the experience one bit.
I’ve been on a fantasy kick for a while and really needed a break, and this was the perfect palate cleanser. This story was so cute. I absolutely love a single dad romance, and Benny and his daughter completely stole the show. I loved the way he is with her it melted my heart. Willow was genuinely the perfect missing piece to their little family. I loved this whole story!

This book was such a fun ride, well written, great pacing, and the main cast? Super likable. I really enjoyed their personalities and all the chaotic, messy, lovable interactions.

Now why is it 4 stars and not 5? Because Willow and Benny Boy let the clowns juggle, ride bikes lmao and pull stunts in their lives for way too long. Willow said she needed a “break” when she really needed to pack her bags and hit eject. And Benny? That man needed 47 jump scares, 12 stress migraines, and a deadly weapon before he got that woman out of his life. Lmao he was more concerned with giving his baby a crackhead… I mean mom that he was allowing anything. He needed to politely grab her up and toss her out him and Charlie’s life lmao like Uncle Phil would do Jazz.

All that said, I still ate this story up. Soft romance, juicy drama, and just enough mess to keep me entertained.

Thank you NetGalley and Dreamscape Media for the ARC of this audiobook.

This book was okay and nothing exciting.

The narrators were okay, but I didn't feel anything for the characters. None of it felt deep or like either of them had depth. I think the book would have been better if it was duet story. The MMC doing his daughter's voice was grating and the FMC doing the sex scenes came off as uncomfortable and way performative

I did like that the MMC was a tattoo artist and was in a biker group that gave back to the community. I don't think I've had a book about tattoo artists. I loved it

"Kissing my teeth" was the repeated statement in this book that drove me nuts.
