Decades ago, a brave whaler met a mysterious end and ever since Eli has "lived" in an old cottage by the sea.
"It was late, the sun just about to dip into the horizon, but this was too great a prize to ignore."
The previous tenant was a painter, depicting thrilling stories and scenes from Eli's memories.
But the new tenets? They are something else entirely.
Remy and her daughter, Olivia. (shudders)
"Now not only did he have one female, but she brought another. Beastly child."
They are determined to find a new start and Eli is determined to help them....find a new start somewhere far, far away from his once-peaceful cottage life.
And yet, despite himself, Eli is beginning to recall...things...things that he'd rather leave forgotten.
"You know, you are not making good choices."
"Good choices?"
"You're asking for a time-out," Olivia said as she climbed back into her frilly bed.
This is definitely one of my favorites from Cash!
I absolutely adored the dynamic between Eli and Olivia (and Remy). There's just something about a grumpy old man and a sassy little girl that really makes me love a story.
I thought the Remy-ex-husband thing was a little over-the-top but it ended up being balanced by the end of the book.
I really loved watching Eli come to himself and realize what he was missing - it was so sweet and heartwarming.
One thing that really disappointed me was the page length. I really fell for this story...and when it ended, I was so sad!
It was so good and I really wanted more of a plot and scenes with Eli just so I could spend more time within these pages.
Ahh well. That's a good problem to have.

Normally I feel a bit of remorse when I give a book a 1 Star rating, but this time????
Here’s why . . . First, look at that cover. How can something sooooooo pretty be filled with something sooooooooo bad. Second, the blurb that made me request the dang thing in the first place:
“Remy Galway and her daughter Olivia are rebuilding their life after a failed marriage in a 300 year old cottage in historic Cold Spring Harbor, Long Island. Little do they know, another occupant is lurking in the haven of their own home. Will the After House be their shelter or their tomb?”
Sounds awesome, right? I was stoked to begin The After House and bumped it ahead of a bunch of stuff I should have already finished a loooooong time ago but have not (because I’m a slacker). I was expecting a scary horror story and a ghost like this . . .
What I got instead? A ghost like this . . .
Buuuuuuuuuut, there were additional ghosts to be had. Once again, I thought the bonus duo might be something along these lines . . .

It was something more like this . . .
There was also a super-hard-to-solve mystery where someone was trying to kill the MC. There are like SIX adult characters in the entire book. One is the MC, two of them are the MC’s parents, one is her new/very pregnant friend, one is her new love interest, and the last is her abusive ex-husband who not only beat the crap out of her before she wised up and got a restraining order, but was living a dual life with a new wife and baby. Hrrrrmmmmm, wonder who it could be? Better call in the experts to solve this one . . .
And finally, speaking of the love interest. Grown-up books SHOULD NOT have “instalove.” Not even if you call it “finding your soulmate” instead. Dude and dudette get set up by the buttinsky mother for coffee and after a few days “it feels like I’ve come home” and “don’t want to live if you’re not here.”
The After House had no idea what it wanted to be. A romance, a horror story, a thriller? The combo of all of the above just made for one big mess. All that being said, this book has received a lot of high ratings, so there’s a good chance that everyone but me will like it.

1. Pretty covers with little substance are a huge pet peeve to me;
2. The synopsis claimed the book would be scary, but it wasn't (hence the "Casper" .gif);
3. There was an extra ghost/wannabe angel apprentice attempting to get her wings and her superior which muddied the already muddied waters of a bad story even further (hence the "It's a Wonderful Life" .gif);
4. There was a VERY OBVIOUS mystery to solve (hence the "Scooby Doo" .gif);
5. And finally there was a crapton of instalove which made me puke (hence the barfing mayo bottle .gif).
I've also been accused of getting my jollies from bashing books. To that I say looky here I write crappy .gif-filled 5-Star reviews too.

This was an enjoyable and quite a fun read. I love the front cover, and the story itself was interesting and easy to follow.
I would describe this story as a ghostly romance with a little bit of humour thrown in from time to time.
I think this story is suitable for teenagers and adults. I wouldn’t say it is scary at all. Although, it is a little dark with regards to the whaling, so probably not the best book for a strict vegetarian.
The characters were very likeable, even the dead ones.
My only criticism is that I would probably have preferred it to be slightly longer, so I could have got to know the characters a little more, and perhaps built up more suspense in places. I did find myself feeling for Eli though, as his story was very sad.
I received this book through Netgalley in exchange for an honest review, and I’d happily read more by this author.

Once again, I saw the words “By Michael Phillip Cash” and I had to read it! I am so glad I did because I was taken across genres, from suspense to the paranormal to romance and even into humor! The After House has it all, including a rather fascinating ghost with a few childish tendencies and a child who knows how to deal with things that go bump in the night!
When an emotionally defeated young divorcee comes to an old whaling town on Long Island with her young daughter, they discover their historic home holds more than the memories and charm of an era long gone. The resident ghost goes about “frightening” them with all the zeal of a child having a tantrum, which indicates he never read “Ghosting: 101,” but could probably use a good anger management class.
As if that’s not enough, her meddling mother sets her up with a charming suitor who she literally bumps heads with. But wait, Remy appears to be the object of some unknown evil who is after more than merely scaring her and our swarthy Sea Captain isn’t too pleased.
What can I say, the wheels of imagination and storytelling are running full out for Michael Phillip Cash, once again! Mr. Cash has created another hit with his “hauntingly” creative style, which is pure “Cash.” His characters come off the pages and jump right into your mind and heart. Villains are villains, the good guys may not wear white hats, but they are perfectly delightful. And Remy’s daughter? Priceless, simply priceless, I see a future ghost tamer in the making!
Looking for a ghost story for all ages that won’t have you cowering under the sheets or give you nightmares about walking the plank? The After House is it!

Having never read, or heard of, Michael Phillip Cash before I was not sure what to expect from The After House, but as I love horror and ghost stories I was eager to start reading and I wasn’t let down.
Remy Galway and her young daughter Olivia are putting their lives back to together after her failed marriage. She decides she wants to go her own way and not live in her parent’s house so rents a 300 year old house in the small town of Cold Spring Harbour, Long Island.
The house used to belong to the captain of a whaling ship in 1840 and there is a full wall mural of the 19th century Captain Eli Gaspar in the house.
Olivia doesn’t like the house and feels she is being watched but little do they know that they are sharing the house with Eli and 2 other mysterious beings that cannot be seen.
Eli doesn’t like the interruptions and changes they have brought with them and wants to scare them off but when someone or something starts threatening the life of Remy he soon becomes her protector.
Overall, I loved The After House. It is a ghost story that spans 174 years with great characters from the past and present. It is also a love story filled with danger and tragedy.
Each short chapter builds the tension until the final events are revealed, but will Remy survive, will Eli get his way and what is the purpose of the 2 mysterious figures? You will just have to read it to find out.
At 200 pages it is a great read that I read in one sitting as it was addictive and absorbing with excellent, strong characters. While I wouldn’t say it is very scary, it is a good ghost story that would suit teenagers and adults.
Highly recommended. I will definitely be looking out for other books by Michael Phillip Cash.

Cash opens his epic in 1840 aboard a whaling boat captained by one Eli Gaspar who grapples wit his own huge whale that destroys his ship, his cabin boy to whom he has grown very close, his promise to his wife and child, and himself in drowning, Jump to the present where in Cold Springs Harbor we meet Remy, her abusive and lothario husband Scott and their daughter Olivia. Remy and Scott separate (Scott has a new woman pregnant with his child) and Remy and Olivia move into an old cottage left empty by the passing of an recluse artist named Pat who has painted a mural of a whaling vessel on the wall inside the home. The character in the painting is Eli who cohabitated the house as a spirit and remains in the house with other spirits while Remy and Olivia cope with the changes in their lives. The book is enriched by the flashbacks to Eli's life and the contact he has with Remy and Olivia as a ghost in the present and it is this ingenious interplay that drives the story of this novel of a strangely `haunted house' to its satisfying end.
Creative ideas coupled with well-sculpted characters make this new work a leap forward for the author. Michael Phillip Cash continues to rapidly ascend the ladder toward being a top American writer and with this novel he proves there is little he cannot accomplish in his passion for ghost stories. Highly Recommended.

After divorcing her husband, Remy and her daughter
move to an old cottage right near the water.
The house is a little big for just two people.
The house is drafty and lets the chill inside.
On top of all that, The house has a ghost.
A somewhat noisy one.
Remy's mother introduces her to a new fellow.
His name is Hugh. He seems to be just perfect for Remy.
They connect like soul-mates from the start.
Remy begins to have bad luck.
Her yoga studio is targeted by vandals.
She's chased in her car which causes her to have an accident.
Then things finally turn around for the better.
The ghost is still noisy, but not causing problems for her anymore.
Things are looking promising for her and Hugh.
Then someone breaks in her house...
- My Review -
For me, this was somewhat of a surprise.
I expected it to be eerie, but it wasn't.
It was kind of sweet, sweet in terms of angels.
There are two angels watching over everything.
I hate to pop the romance bubble but I really wasn't feeling the chemistry between Remy and Hugh.
It is a ghost story, but a different one. It had a bit of mystery too.
I REALLY liked the ending. =)

MY THOUGHTS
I've read several of Mr. Cash's books and they never disappoint. This book is entertaining and a fairly fast read. Haunted tales seem to be Mr. Cash's specialty and they couldn't be better. He will take several stories and twist and turn them until they are one fantastic read. He gives a little bit of everything so readers of all genres can find this book a good read. You get the wonderful haunting tale, some romance, a little history and more. If you read his book "THE FLIP" you will recognize a few characters from that book in this one. We have a setting from the 1840's to present day on Long Island. You can picture the old cottage that Remy Galway has rented. She is newly divorced with a six year old daughter. As time passes, Remy realizes she and her daughter are not the only occupants of this old historic cottage. But these don't appear to be friendly spirits. Strange things begin to happen and these spirits want her OUT! This cottage is over 300 years old and there are probably a lot of spirits roaming the halls, that is, if it's spirits. Could it be someone or something else? The previous occupant and owner was a whaling captain and he's been in the house ever since his death. Now remember, you have to use your imagination, let it go and put the characters in play. Remy finds romance but will the Captain Eli allow her peace or will he chase her away? The book isn't the kind that you end up scared but it is light reading with a ghost you might grow to like. On top of that you get a bit of Long Island history and characters you can like and get to know. I had hope it would be a bit scarier but it's a quick read and enjoyable. The author is known for his vivid details of the settings and the characters. Once again, Mr. Cash didn't disappoint.

I have said it before and I will say it again, Michael Phillip Cash has written his way into my list of favorite authors. He is able to weave a tale in a succinct way while drawing the reader in to the storyline and has us invested in the characters just pages into his novel.
After suffering through a failed marriage, Remy Galway and her daughter Olivia have set out on a new journey to rebuild their lives. They move into a 300 year old cottage in historic Cold Spring Harbor, Long Island. Little do they know, the home is already occupied and the inhabitant does not like to share space!
Right away I felt connected to Remy as we share a number of personal qualities and personality traits. After falling in love with and marrying a man that her parents did not like mind you, their relationship fails in epic proportions after the birth of their daughter. I love that Michael depicts Remy’s place in live in a realistic manner as she works her way through a multitude of feelings and fears. Suddenly finding oneself alone, as a single parent, can be overwhelming to say the least and sometimes an uphill battle; this is evident in Remy’s life. I love that she is down to earth, spunky in her own way, and stronger than she knows.
I was drawn to Captain Eli and found myself captivated by the life that he lives, the adventures that he took, and how lost he feels at present time. Though he comes across as Mr. Rough and Tough, I couldn’t help but finding myself wanting to hug him. It is more than fair to say that his life takes twists and turns that I certainly never expected and as we peel back the layers of Eli’s life, my heart ached for him.
For one reason or another, I found myself easily invested and often befriending all of the characters that we meet. I also oddly found myself extremely intrigued, and perhaps romanticizing the life of a whale hunter. This is odd to me because I have never, ever thought about whale hunting. In fact, it is possible this is the first time I have even read about this occupation. That speaks volumes about Michael and his amazing ability to captivate his reader.
From the small town atmosphere of the novel to the flashbacks that help build the storyline and develop his characters, and finally the relationship that develops between Remy and a new gentleman that she meets, Hugh, Michael has absolutely nailed it with this novel and once again did not disappoint.
I would not and do not classify this book as a horror story or even a scary read. I wasn’t scared of any of the characters that we meet and blood, guts, and feathers have no place in this book. This is a thrilling read that welcomes paranormal and suspense and I was simply unable to put it down. One sitting reads normally aren’t my thing but Michael has been able to woo me with his words.
As a side note, I love that Michael breathed life into two characters that we met in “The Flip” and I hope to become reacquainted with friends from the past in his coming novels.

If you've read this author's STILLWELL and THE FLIP, you know what he can do in the context of hauntings and ghosts. THE AFTER HOUSE opens with a stunning but sad 19th century whale hunt, ending in disaster. In the present day, more disaster looms: single parent Remy Galway and daughter Olivia (who has the Sight) move into a 19th century cottage in Cold Spring Harbor, on Long Island. The home, in poor repair, is haunted by the ghost of the whaler captain.
This is actually a romantic ghostly suspense story, but yes there is danger, conflict, and confrontation. It's well written and I quite enjoyed reading. My thanks to the author for gifting me THE AFTER HOUSE via Kindle.

What can I say. Michael has hit it out of the park yet again.
Meet Remy and her daughter Olivia. They have been through some very bad things in their lives. But will living in a 300 year old house with a resident ghost help or drive them crazy
I have to say, I have fallen in love with Michael Cash. He is now my top guy to go to when I want to read a good ghost story that isn't really gory or far fetched. He likes to take his readers on a journey that will open your heart to what could be and what was.
All his stories have a ghost that needs help and a couple that will eventually help them out and find love in the process.
Michael writes such interesting characters. There isn't your gory evil haunting book. He writes with such love for his characters they all have some flaws but in the end they all work everything out
Case in point Remy Galaway she is a divorcee and very scared to be by herself. She thinks that she wasn't good enough for her two timing husband. Captain Eli doesn't like that Remy and Olivia have moved into his house and tries to haunt them.
Michael delivers an award winning book that is a haunting tale of love and loss and redemption. This book will grab your attention and keep you reading well into the night. This is a haunting and loving book. If you like the FLIP AND STILLWELL you will love this book. So if you want a great read for Halloween , with out all the gore and blood. Please check this book out you will not be disappointed

This was one of those books you can't put down.
It starts out with Captain Eli on his whaling boat chasing after a huge whale back in 1840. Then the book shifts to the present with Remy Galway and her daughter moving into a small white house near the sea. She has just gotten divorced and is starting life all over. But something is not quite right with the house. You see, the house is haunted by Captain Eli and Olivia (Remy's daughter) knows about the sailor.
Things happen to Remy at home and around town. She finds love again with Hugh (I laughed about the who? and Hugh jokes). Remy seems to think that someone is after her but doesn't know who. With the help of Hugh and Eli, she finally is able to put the past behind her as well as what's been happening to her.
I love the setting of the book, and of course the sea and the old sailing ships. Hugh and Remy are so life-like but I think my favorite has to be Captain Eli--he is such a ghost. This is a book worth reading.

The After House by Michael Phillip Cash is a wonderful novel. It has romance, mystery, and ghosts which are all the elements of a great book (at least, I think so!). The book starts out in the mid-1800’s with Captain Eli on his whaling ship (it is horrible how the whaling trade decimated whales, but it was very necessary at that time). Eli owned a house in Cold Creek Harbor, Long Island with his wife, Sarah and their children, Charlotte and Thomas. During their trip home, the ship came across the biggest whale they had ever seen and they attempted to capture it. Things go horribly awry for the captain and his crew.
Remy Galway and her daughter, Olivia, are starting over and they happen to rent the Captain’s 300 year old house. Remy is just getting out of a horrible marriage. Scott, ex-husband, cheated on her with another woman, stole money from her and her parents, and then hit her in a fit of anger.
Remy and Olivia feel something in the house. They feel like someone is watching them. As they come to find out, it is Captain Eli. Captain Eli has not been able to move on. Captain Eli is not happy with the new occupants of the house. He was very happy with the last gentleman, Pat, who was quiet and had no television, no phone, and no internet. Captain Eli decides to do something about his unwanted renters who play loud music, have painted the walls pink, and they keep wanting to change things in his house. He attempts to scare them by destroying a picture that Olivia received from her grandmother (it has kittens on it). Captain Eli’s temper got the better of him and he ended up making a bigger mess. He feels bad about what he did when he sees how much it upsets Remy. What Remy does not know it that Olivia can see Captain Eli (and boy does she get even with him for upsetting her mother).
Someone then starts attacking Remy. A bomb (Molotov cocktail) thrown into her yoga studio, running her car off the road, she gets poisoned (she writes it off to the flu), and then attacked in her home. Remy also meets Hugh, who is the mayor and runs a local museum. Remy, Hugh, and Olivia find out who is attacking Remy and help Captain Eli cross over to be with his family. This is a delightful book. I enjoyed reading it and look forward to more books by this author.

This is an out and out ghost story. Perfect for October. Eli Gaspar is an old fishing captain with a tragic past that has been left in relative peace for the past few hundred years, occupying his 300 year old fishing cottage on the coast. He doesn't remember much of his past and that's ok with him. Until Remy and Olivia move into his abode.
Remy is going through a difficult divorce with a crazy ex. She wants to live on her own with her child, Olivia, and show the world that she is strong and independent, especially her parents. But things are getting weird in this big old house and her ex is acting erratically.
The After House is a good ghost story but it also has some wonderfully modern elements to it. A woman is being stalked and the ghost is being protective. The one aspect that I didn't really like were the guardian angels. I think the plot could have stood on its own without them. It would have made Eli a stronger character since he would have been making positive developmental changes on his own, without outside forces. That being said, it really was a fantastic book.

To say I love this author is an understatement. I have read and reviewed every single one of his novels-they are all unbelievably good. You can see all his books by going to his blog or website.
Just like in The Flip there are ghosts a plenty in this novel. The main ghost who haunts the cottage that Olivia and her daughter move into after her divorce is a cantankerous old sailor who knows he is looking for something--but can't quite remember what. It takes him a while but he finally gets used to the new inhabitants of his house. The two angels who are watching over him--well two different personalities with a common goal--and one is determined to win her full wings! While all this is going on a very real person is trying to murder Olivia. Will she and her new human "friend" be able to keep this fiend from causing irreparable damage? Will our cantankerous ghost be able to help them? Will the ghost find closure? Will the angel get her wings?
I found myself chuckling at times while reading this--that old ghost was TROUBLE and really tried to get them to leave--until he decided he liked them--poor confused ghost! Given To Me For An Honest Review
Michael Phillip Cash's book The After House is not a must read. It's a HAVE to read. It is that good. Once you sit down to begin reading it will grab you and not let you go. It's about Remy and her daughter, Olivia. After a failed marriage Remy and Olivia move to being a new life together. They find a three hundred year old cottage to move into. Little do they know there is already an occupant living there and he doesn't like to share. There are many twists and turns and those pages will keep turning and turning and will turn some more for you. You will not put it down until the end. It is haunting and suspenseful. Does the occupant find his way home or does he stay to help Remy begin a new life? I love reading this book. It now has a place on my bookshelf and I am sure it will on yours. I gave it 5 stars but clearly it deserves more. I highly recommend it to everyone. I look for more from Michael Phillip Cash.

Brought back my found memories of one of my favorites TV shows from my childhood "The Ghost and Mrs. Muir.
I will definitely be keeping my eye out for more from this very talented writer.

The After House by Michael Phillip Cash is his new ghost story. An after house is the deckhouse nearest the stern of a ship, a place when the men go to stay of the elements and was said to the safest place on the ship. An old house on Long Island holds many secrets as it could a safe haven or a tomb.
The story begins with Captain Eli Gaspar, sailing off the coast of Puerto Rico, 1840, is hunting whales. He’s been at sea for 13 months and he thinks about all he has missed. When a whale they are hunting rams the ship, destroying it. Captain Eli is left adrift. Flash forward to 2014, Cold Springs Harbor, Long Island where Remy Gallway and her daughter, Olivia are settling in to their new house. Olivia feels as if someone is watching them as strange things happen around the house. Rooms left in disarray, the electric goes on and on and a strange orb is seen around the house. The audience learns that Captain Eli is in the house and is trying to get Remy and Olivia to leave. He soon realizes that they don’t scare easily until someone tries to kill Remy on multiple occasions and Eli feels very protective. He tries to warn Remy of the coming danger.
I enjoyed this story as it has a great mystery about what happened to Eli after his ship was destroyed, what happened to Eli’s wife and children and who is trying to kill Remy. The resolutions of all three mysteries were excited and something I did not expect. This book was a fast read as it held my attention and had me eagerly awaiting the next piece of the puzzle. This is not a ghost story that is out to scare or frighten its audience. It is simply a mystery which involves a ghost who is searching for his family as well as protecting the one in his house. I highly recommend it.

It seems whenever I read something from Michael Phillip Cash, I find myself enjoying this author more and more. He is highly talented and impresses me with his wisdom for the supernatural premise of storytelling. I always start his books thinking they will be slightly scary, but then find myself falling in love with the characters and the plot.
The After House was no different. I loved this story! The cover is beautifully crafted and does cause me to believe it will be slightly frightening but I was wrong. It personally didn't scare me at all; but it did make me question the shifting shadows in my own home.
Mr. Cash pushes us to question what we aren't sure about and forces us to contemplate the unknown, such as ghosts and the paranormal.
I loved the interaction between the characters in this book so much! Olivia is adorable and it is hard to imagine her as a "spawn of Satan" as Eli likes to refer to her. It seems everyone in the story is important and ties in to the past as well as the future of the town. I loved the research done to create such a wonderful love story. I really think this is one of my favorite books by Mr. Cash.
I highly encourage anyone to give this book a try. I literally finished it in one day and was hoping for a little more too! I would love to read some more about the other characters beside Remy and Hugh, as I felt they are what added to the story more than anyone else.

The After House was a great story and made a day that started out rough, eventually turn into a wonderful evening! Everyone, please try this book out! You will not be disappointed!

For those looking for a good ghost story, The After House, by Michael Phillip Cash, delivers. Captain Eli Gaspar, a whaler, left his young wife and family to go on a hunt, believing that the need to provide them with material possessions trumped the importance of simply being with them. On the final leg of his last-planned journey, he takes on a mighty bull whale that lobtails, surprising the crew. The hunt leaves him and a young boy who accompanied him on the journey, the sole survivors. The Captain is surprised when he returns home, to learn of events regarding his wife and children. Ridden with guilt, he inhabits his family home, where he remains for over a hundred years, unable to face what awaits him if he moves on. Enter Remy Galway, fairly recently divorced and the new property tenant, her daughter, Olivia, her parents, and Hugh Matthews, her new love interest. When strange goings on occur at the house, readers will wonder: is it the Captain? Or, is there something less ethereal--and more sinister--going on.
The After House offered a refreshing change of pace. Although the ghostly events seemed a bit stretched with respect to the Captain's ability to manipulate physical things, I was willing to believe for the sake of the story. I liked Remy and Hugh. Their ability to forge a relationship, finally allowing Remy to leave her past behind, encouraged me. Olivia was a gutsy child. Finally, the dog that Remy's father gave to her helped create a believable family dynamic. If you like your stories to "haunt" you after you have turned the last page, look no further than The After House.

The After House is a captivating story about a newly divorced mom and daughter. Remy is starting fresh after ending an abusive relationship with her ex. This book really hit home for me. Michael nailed the emotions of what it is like to suffer abuse and I think he did an excellent job conveying those emotions in this book.

The After House is the first book by Michael Phillip Cash that I have read and I am so happy that I picked up this book! I absolutely loved the story and Michael's engaging writing style.
The first thing that had attracted me towards the book was the cover and then add the small but very appealing blurb to this and you have a winner.
A haunted house, centuries of history and mystery attached to it, a resident ghost who is still trying to figure out things about his life which have prevented his departure to the next world and the troubled new residents with their own stories to tell had me instantly intrigued. I confess that I love to read stories set in the past. It is so interesting to read about a time gone by and re-live the lifestyles through the characters in the book!
The plot is well planned and executed. The author has the flair for storytelling and he was very successful in fluidly see-sawing from the past to the present in his book. It is evident that the author has researched his story settings well and is able to create a very believable world in his book. I could visualize the 300 year old house with its age-old decor, the dark and mysterious environment inside it and the beautiful surroundings with the sea and the quaint town harboring a long history of whaling.
The characters are well drawn and developed. Eli touched my heart with his yearning for his family and the guilt he carried from so long ago. He is prone of drama and made me laugh as well as cry at his antics. Remy and her daughter, Olivia are such a lovely pair. I could empathize with Remy who has just come out of a relationship that she had felt would be the forever kind and is trying her best to make her a life for her herself and her daughter.
All in all, I really enjoyed spending an evening in The After House amidst all the drama, history and romance. 4.5 out of 5 to it and strongly recommended to everyone. Go read and enjoy some adventurous time in the After House! I loved Michael's writing style and am definitely going to read his other books as well keep a lookout for his future work.

I really related to this book from the very beginning as Remy fell in love with a man, that her parents did not like, but married him anyway, and then to find out her parents were right after her child was born. He turned out to be not only unfaithful, but an abusive husband both physically & mentally, which is the way my first marriage ended. Remy picked herself up and returned to her education skills, and worked two jobs to get her life going for her and her child, and ended up renting an old house that was much to her liking, but little did she know there was an entity already living there, and that liked it too. This story really captured my interest both mysteriously, and humorous at times, which I was surprised that Mr. Cash had a humorous side to him. The intriguing mystical part of the story held me on the end of my seat at times also. I must say the ending did have me a bit surprised, but satisfied. In reading the brief synopsis of this book it was about all the things that I knew would interest me, and keep me awake (reading puts me to sleep). I have been interested in the hereafter all my life, but this book did have a bit of a .... oh, I don't know... a bit of a humorous, but yet a reality about it. I started to really get into Remy's character, and relating myself with her. She was a bit of a loner, and many a times went off into her own world. I'm a bit like that myself since I was young. As I read this story it became more of a place that I could go to, and forget about reality, and hide within the realm of the author's fantasy. The author had a way to pull you in with emotional thoughts, and heartwarming scenes, but yet keep you on the edge of your chair. At times they were a bit complex, but as you read on you were back in a comfort zone smiling and giggling at the author's whimsical way of explaining a scene.
This book was highly entertaining in a sense that you could actually feel like you were watching a movie. The author definitely has a way with words to hold your interest, and I hated to put the book down when I had to stop for a moment for the real world's chores. Many a time I thought oh this might happen next or that was going to happen next, and I was always wrong. They should definitely make a movie out of it.

I was given this book by the author for an honest review.
I would give this book 3.5 stars. This was a fun and entertaining book. Definitely not what I was expecting at all. I was expecting some sort of suspense story but what I read instead was a quirky romantic comedy. It's filled with drama, the paranormal, romance and some funny antics and thoughts here and there. Overall, I enjoyed all of the characters, they were likable. The main character, Remy irritated me at times being so naive. I personally thought the plot was predictable but the story overall was entertaining. The writing is easy to read, nothing too complicated.
There were a few things that I didn't like about the story. Remy was frustrating at times because she had to make lots of mistakes to learn any lessons and she gave everyone the benefit of the doubt even if they did any type of harm. The timeline of events in the beginning of the book were not concrete. Remy starts her life back up with doing many things but you really don't find out how long it's been until half way through the book. By the time she starts her life up and has a house, there is no mention of how old her daughter is. There isn't even a hint. It just mentions that she's in school but her grammar suggests she's still young. That was confusing to me since I like to know the age range of the characters in the books I read.
Overall, I would recommend this book if you're looking for a paranormal romantic comedy. The story gave me some laughs :-)

Overview: Remy and Olivia have started a new page in their lives. Mother and daughter respectively, they’ve moved into a charming cottage. However, it seems like they aren’t the only ones living there. Something or someone has to be behind all of these odd occurrences.
Likes: Mr. Cash has braided Remy’s tale of learning to move on, Eli’s tale of loss, and the fact that people have to dear with the consequences of the choices that they make into a rich narrative. Olivia’s interactions with Eli were at times cute, and other times it was hilarious. Poor Eli just wanted things to stay the way they were when his last guest moved out.
Dislikes: I didn’t like Scott at all. What kind of person can tear someone down like that? I’ll tell you one thing, he wasn’t a man.
Conclusion: This is a great ghost story. One part humor, one part spooky, with a dash of family life throughout. I hope you enjoy it as well.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I have never read from this author, but I really am going to look into more books from him. It is well written and I enjoyed these characters. I enjoyed laughing out loud and Olivia is sweet for a child, but takes no crap when she feels her mom threatened. Emy is a single parent and has been divorced a year. She is making her own way after her ex Scott had leaned oh her parents to help make a go of it financially and their marriage. She is sweet and caring and strong. She meets Hugh and things change for her in this new town. She suddenly starts hearing things in her 300 year old cottage and feels crazy! Lol..that gave this book so much life and you did not feel crazy for reading it either. There is some suspense and romance and paranormal in this read. It was a joy for me to read and would do it again! Good fast read!

A cute book about the friendly ghost of an old sea captain named Eli. The book begins with Eli's ship being destroyed by a great whale. Once we get a glimpse of that back story, we are whisked to modern day with Remy and her daughter Olivia trying to get over a very bad break up moving into the 300 year old home which we soon find out is inhabited by the ghost of Eli.
This book, while not very scary was entertaining and well written. I think the audience for this book might be for a younger reader, most likely a teenager; but adults would find this book entertaining as well. Some of the chapters and dialog are in the ghosts POV, which is a different idea, and made for a bit of comic relief at times, as the ghost tried to figure out modern day happenings.

Remy Galway plans to buy the old long island home as a sign of her Independence after a long recovery from her bitter divorce. With her parents support she has slowly rebuilt her life and opened her own business. Now she is ready for her and her daughter to stand on their own. What she doesn’t know is that her home is haunted by a crusty whaling captain who is not amused by two females moving into his house, changing things. It doesn’t help that Olivia seems to be able to see him and isn’t at all frightened. His childish attempts to get them to leave is lost in the mystery of bad luck seemingly following Remy. Her home and business are vandalized and her car is run off the road. She doesn’t see any connection, however she can’t shake the feeling that someone is watching her and when she begins to receive phone calls that don’t show up on her cell phone history she begins to doubt herself. Luckily Hugh, a friend of her mother’s, is there to help see her through the trouble.
This is the second book written by Mr. Cash that I have read and I continue to appreciate his writing style. His characters are larger than life and his story is exceptional. The historical aspect of the tale fit together beautifully with the modern day story. While this story focuses on Remy and her new found life, it is really about Captain Eli. I loved how Hugh, in his role as curator of the local maritime museum, holds the key that may give the Captain a chance to finish his tale.
I would appreciate longer books from this author, but I can honestly say this book was exactly as long as it needed to be and there were no loose ends or rushed storylines.
