Christine Dark and Mark Martinez face their greatest challege yet. Captured by the Dominion of the Ukraine, where they face torture and death, they must find a way to outsmart the Iron Tsar, escape, and deliver the world from utter destruction. Meanwhile, other heroes and villains forge alliances or battle each other as the fate of Earth Alpha, an alternate reality where superheroes are only too real, hangs in the balance.
C.J. discovered his obsession with making up crap and writing it down at the age of 6, when he wrote his first short story, back in the days when the Cold War was still on and the only mobile devices were the wrist watch and the walkie-talkie. He's been making up crap and writing it down for fun and profit ever since.
A sweeping conclusion to the trilogy, with a (mostly) satisfying ending... In this book, Christine and Face-Off manage to extract themselves from trouble, get some training, and then deal with the Very Big Trouble that the whole series has been leading up to. There are some major setbacks along the way and a few very big shocks in the course of the book. The very end felt as though we were getting a set-up for a new book (series?) about Ultimate... we'll see, I suppose.
Anyhow. My one quibble with the book was the pacing of it -- it felt uneven, and I had a little trouble during the slower sections with maintaining interest in the plot as a whole. It almost felt as though the huge action-packed beginning should have been a part of the second book, so that we could have begun this book with the gentler-paced training & preparation section that, for this novel, was the front-middle of the book.
Lots of superhero action (in space!), and it's good to see the good guys get their act together and figure out who the real enemy is. Worth reading and an apt conclusion to a very fun superhero sci-fi story!
I can't really decide if this one was as good as the two previous books. Too much angst and self-doubt. And what is it with this love triangle? Although I really like stories like this they are also the reason why authors like TJ Reeder is my favorite, uncomplicated where the hero is the hero, you know who the good guys are and there is no emotional crap going on throughout the story. But having said all that I still enjoyable the story although I don't know if I will buy number 4 at this stage.
I really enjoyed this book. Characters good as always, little too much of a romantic to say I loved the book. It's a little to real in the romance department.
A good read slightly marred by the ridiculous love triangle. Thought this was going to be a trilogy but I see there is a #4 - hopefully all the numerous loose ends will be wrapped up.
Clearly the story has kept me reading, which is a good thing. :) I do have some issues (besides the lack of editing), primarily around Christine being too Mary Sue for my taste, but overall, still reading!
Gonna have to read Carmella's other stuff. This series has been a distinctly enjoyable adult take on the genre. All the troupes you could want tied up in some fun sci-fi concepts.
