Once again these ladies deal with a difficult topic, and haven't shied away from the realities of it. The story contains some humour, is both serious and sad, but felt like it tackled the subject of eating disorders truthfully and respectfully. The character of Kenji felt very true and real. He's obviously feeling used, rejected, unheard, and just plain invisible, by his coach. This has obviously had an effect on his mental health, and I found his feelings of denial real and honest.

For me, Shaun is just one of those characters that you can't help but love. He's got his own cross to bear, but everything that he does just adds to his overall charm. The story starts with him trying to reconnect with Kenji, wondering what his relationship with him is, and what it could be. I really felt for both boys, it's sad how they're both bullied by people they trust, constantly being put down.

Fortunately, their friends are there for them, Soren, Felix, Tyler and Jonah (from the previous books in the series), always offering support. I'm really not one for spoilers so I won't say too much more, but I will say that if you enjoy books with a touch of romance, reality, and strong elements of 'coming of age' themes, this series is for you . Also, I liked that at the end of the story nothing is resolved too neatly and too quickly, but Shaun and Kenji are together, surrounded by their friends, living their best lives .

Very sweet ending to this coming of age series.

Shaun and Kenji are very cute, but they're dealing with a lot of stresses while they try to figure themselves out.

Their relationship is very innocent and it was so sweet, but they also had a lot of seriousness with Kenji's eating disorder and abusive coach, and Shaun's abusive dad.

I'd love to revisit the characters from this series in future when they're grown up.

OMG!!!! I love love love love Kenji and Shaun! Clearly, I have a type.

The struggles of dealing with your own stuff while trying to support someone else through their stuff is so realistic and moving. There was just enough angst, but also enough skating to keep it compelling. This is my favorite book of this series. I can’t wait to see the decisions these kids make, and who goes on to what future.

This was so sweet. I know this is a teen series so of course it wouldn't be as heavy as one for adults (especially an angsty one), but I am still in awe that RJ and VL managed to write an eating disorder in a way that feels not that heavy somehow without also making it feel minimized or less than. It has as many serious topics as a book like Blade (also by RJ and VL) yet it doesn't feel as heavy. The light at the end of the tunnel is a lot brighter here.

This duo does have a great track record when it comes to treating sensible topics with respect without minimizing, dramatizing or romanticizing them, so I expected nothing less.

LOVED LOVED LOVED. You touched on something that young adults need to be more aware of. I loved how you handled every bit of it and how Kenji and Shaun handled it together. I love this series. It’s everything I could ever want in a story. Thank you so much.

I have been loving this sweet YA hockey series and Dance on Ice is no exception - from the adorable cover to the best friends to more romance. What I will say is that this one hit me hard in the feels... and deals with more angst, homophobia and an eating disorder. All of the drama is well handled and well researched and the slow and sweet way these two come together is just wonderful.

I'm sad that this is the third and final book in the series, but I hope that this isn't the end of writing sweet YA romance for this duo.

Wow, I'm always in awe when writers can tackle a heavy topic like an eating disorder and just hit the nail on the head. RJ Scott and VL Locey manage this with so much tact and empathy especially in a teen series it's mind blowing.
I really enjoyed reading this, it had me going through a range of emotions but left a massive smile on my face at the end.
The characters are so endearing and lovely and really pull you into their story.
Great addition to this series.

Without a doubt my favourite book in the series, as well as one of my fave reads in general. "Dance on Ice" follows Chesterford Coyotes' captain Shaun Stanton, who's having a bit of a rough time knowing whether what he wants for himself aligns with what his father expects from him. After all, it has already cost him a lot to keep his dad happy, hasn't it? Sacrificing the bond with his best friend, Kenji Kelly, was hard on Shaun the first time, but now that they seem to be slowly warming up to each other and his father demands that he stop hanging out with Kenji immediately, he isn't sure that he can walk away from Kenji a second time... Let alone that he even wants to. Meanwhile Kenji has been struggling to meet coach Ilya's expectations, but he's doing okay. No, really. Food is not a problem for him anymore, alright? Weight is important if he wants to make any big championship, but that's all there is to it, really. Same with Shaun Stanton, whose sudden reappearance in Kenji's life is not at all exciting. Or fun. Or, like, meaningful in any way.

After loving books one and two, I couldn't wait to dive into the last installment in the Chesterford Coyotes series. Unlike its two predecessors, "Dance on Ice" does not revolve around Soren and his friend group, so I wasn't sure about what to expect from this book that focuses on the team's captain, who isn't too close with any of the four previous main characters, and a new addition to the cast. But it's safe to say that I was met with the most beautiful romance one could ever ask for!! In this book we hear from two main characters who are a few months away from getting into college, which means that this would fall into the upper age range within YA. It did show in the writing, since it became more introspective and complex, and it also showed in the themes it touched.

Something that I'm always hesitant to read about are eating disorders in teenagers, since there's always the nagging fear that it won't be handled properly and that, as a result, it will feel unrealistic at best and downright offensive at worst. But "Dance on Ice" does an incredible job at depicting what living with an eating disorder means for those who suffer from it, and it tackles the extra-delicate issue of relapsing after you've managed to pull yourself together enough to feel more or less recovered. Although this would be extraordinary enough on its own, the fact that it's a male character who struggles with anorexia nervosa made the rep even more valuable, since EDs are still heavily regarded as female disorders. Boys and men struggle with their body image and eating too, but are still overlooked and forgotten most of the time - so it meant the world to see one as the MC.

The romance was the sweetest thing ever, too!

(…)

Ruthie – ☆☆☆☆
This is the third in the series, and is another great book from the talented duo of V.L. Locey and RJ Scott. This time we get an interesting pairing of two very different ice sports – the oversized, slightly brutish hockey player, Stanton, and the diminutive ice dancer, Kenji.

Both guys are now training on shared ice in the early hours of every morning, their respective coaches bullying them on the ice, using horribly negative slurs to get them to improve. I really hate this style of coaching, so was super angry at both of them and very relieved when things change.

Though they were great friends as youngsters, there was a rift, and it is really touching watching them retrieve the friendship, admit that it might well be much more than just a friendship, and navigate a possible future, all whilst dealing with their coaches hounding them to be better. For Stanton, he has to find the strength to live his own dream, rather than his father's. For Kenji, the road is much more complex as he has a coach who demands his weight stay at a set point, something he feels he can only achieve by starving himself most of the time. It is difficult to read, but the authors have done an amazing job of providing balance and insight.

I definitely recommend this book to you – and for series fans, there are plenty of links to earlier books, which are very satisfying.

DANCE ON ICE is the third installment in the Chesterford Coyotes series. It can be read as a standalone – and the trigger warning for an eating disorder should be taken seriously. If this is a topic you yourself have struggled with or can't read this type of story, please skip this one, as it is a big topic in the plot.

Kenji and Shaun were the closest of friends when they were younger. They played hockey together until Kenji was pulled more toward the figure skating world. Shaun's dad took issue with that and refused to let Shaun remain friends with him. Shaun hated that he was no longer a part of Kenji's world, but he owed his dad for all his sacrifices. Kenji is proudly out as pansexual while Shaun is hiding deep in the bisexual closet even though there are very well known, out hockey players. His dad pushes him hard to be the best and make the NHL at any cost. And Kenji's coach bullies him for his weight – having daily weigh-ins; the stress to be perfect pushes Kenji to an eating disorder. Kenji wants to hate Shaun, but he can't. Shaun wants to protect Kenji and be the one he can lean on. They fight for a regained friendship but they both want more.

The bullying they both experienced was heartbreaking. Seeing Shaun finally stand up against his father was everything, as was Kenji's coach being exposed, unfortunately at the injury of Kenji. There friends stood behind them both and became the support they both needed.

Another great story from this duo of authors!

Remarkable story and great finale

Rating: 4.5🌈

Dance on Ice completes R. J. Scott and V. L. Locey’s terrific Chesterford Coyotes trilogy. It’s been a wonderful, warmhearted YA hockey series that’s had its crossovers with some of these authors other LGBTQIA hockey romance series and characters. So it’s fitting that it ends with appearances with some of those characters as well, in impactful roles and memorable scenes.

Shaun Stanton, the hockey player for the Chesterfield Coyotes and Kenji Kelly, who used to play hockey but is now a figure skater, are the last couple who finish out the series. Each has a huge amount of baggage they are carrying into this book as it begins, their storylines have been smaller threads previously written about.

For Shaun, he’s got a bigoted, homophobic, angry bully of a father who’s pushing him on the ice, making him afraid for himself and his mother. And to speak out about his feelings about his own dreams and awakening bisexuality. This includes his long held feelings for Kenji

For Kenji, he’s under the influence of an abusive Russian skating coach who has unrealistic expectations of his skaters, including their ideal weight. And it’s worsening Kenji’s previously diagnosed eating disorder, a situation he’s hiding.

These are serious, sensitive issues and the authors have given them just the right amount of detail and attention here with each character. We see the emotional impact on the characters, their families, and lives. The story and romance beautifully weaves the steps taken to help each character understand what the impact each abuse is having upon them, as well as the journey they take to get the help they require together.

It doesn’t matter if it’s the hardest steps confronting an abusive parent or having others intervene to get them through a bad situation and make sure it doesn’t happen again. It all plays out realistically and with regard to how we think it might work out in real life.

At the end are certain people immediately forgiven or have they found redemption? No, it’s a journey. I appreciate that. Is this a HEA? No, they are kids, so they are looking at dances, and what if’s. And that’s how it should be too.

I think what I really loved about this is the acceptance. Their once rock solid paths at the beginning of the book looked so very different at the end. The boys were different. So much had changed. Shaun and Kenji were still learning about each other and themselves so their dreams for the future were changing too. Kids and adults often forget that paths are meant to change when they do. That a new course can be taken.

What an amazing story and message.

I absolutely recommend this book and series. It’s a gem no matter what age you are.

I said with the other two entries in Chestorford Coyotes and I'll say it again here: with a few exceptions I generally haven't read YA since I was about 14 years old but as this series is part of the Scott/Locey Hockey Universe there was no way I wouldn't give it a go. And boy was I glad I did!

Dance on Ice is an emotionally charged read that will first break the heart but then repair and warm it too. You can't help but feel immense anger towards both Shaun's dad and Kenji's coach, Ilya. Will either be redeemable? For that you'll have to read Dance for yourself but I will say emotions run very high and not always very favorably.

Watching both Shaun and Kenji become the people they are meant to be is hugely gratifying. The bulk of the story is the now timeframe but through the boys' inner thoughts we get a sense of who they were before their friendship went down the crapper so seeing them move past that is as I said, gratifying but also extremely heartwarming.

Scott and Locey do a magnificent job telling Kenji's eating disorder and how it is always there, no matter how you get a hold on it with therapy and time, it will always be lingering, needing to be cared for. What I really loved was they not only tell Kenji's side but also the side of those who care about them, who want to help, who tend to put their foot in their mouth more times than they intend in their quest to help.

It was nice to see Trent from Deep Edge, book 3 in the authors' Harrisburg Railers, the original series that jumpstarted their hockey universe. I had a feeling he would make an appearance with the figure skating connection and the authors didn't disappoint.

Dance on Ice is a lovely story of hurt, comfort, friendship, young love, but above all healing on multiple levels. As far as I know, Dance is the last entry in this series but I for one would love to see a holiday story to see where our young couples are 5 or 10 years down the road. Dance may take you through an emotional wringer but in all the heart-filled amazing ways.

**4.5**
Another wonderful young adult romance by RJ Scott and VL Locey, though it does hit hard with some difficult content (see trigger warnings).
It's an ex-best friends to boyfriends that starts off with Kenji and Shaun are at odds, sharing the ice in the morning with both of their coaches determined to keep them apart. Shaun's coach is also his dad, a man with very strong opinions about everything to do with what Shaun should be doing with hockey and his life, and it's really starting to get to him. He pulled away from Kenji once because of his dad but he refuses to do it again, especially with his close they become over time and what he discovers Kenji is going through. The sport of ice skating is intense but when your coach has very old school and intense ideas on certain things, it can get to you mentally and physically. I think that the author's wrote this very well throughout the book, both from Kenji and Shaun's POV, as it's difficult for those around that person experiencing abuse of any kind as well.
I enjoyed the slow burn of the relationship, returning to friends and rebuilding that trust before moving into something more. There is also the friendship group from the characters in the previous books who offer a lot of understanding and support to both young men. It's also good to read the after parent for Kenji and how he moves forward.
I received an ARC and am happily giving a review.

Assolutamente no.

I loved Shaun and Kenji's story.

This is book three in the Chesterford Coyotes series and you can probably read it as a standalone. However, I think you’ll enjoy it more if you read the series in order. Note that one of the characters suffers with an eating disorder so proceed with caution if that might be a trigger for you.

All of the books in this series have been so good with little angst and lots of sweet first love and sweet kisses. Shaun and Kenji were close friends when they were younger and then Shaun's father forced him to break off their friendship. His father is pretty awful, spouting homophobic slurs and putting lots of pressure on Shaun to excel at hockey and achieve things that he wasn't able to achieve himself. Kenji's figure skating coach is an abusive a-hole but Kenji doesn't really realize what the man is doing to him by constantly berating him and forcing him to get weighed every day.

As is the norm with books by this writing duo, it touched on all of my emotions and brought on a few tears which is just the kind of book I love to read. I'm a little sad that this trilogy has come to an end but I know that RJ and V.L. have more great books coming and I can't wait to read them all.

An advanced copy of this book was provided to me at my request; my review was voluntary and not influenced by the author.

Dance On Ice is the third book in this series by Scott and Locey, and as with the others, it deals with some serious topics. As always, the issues are described realistically and respectfully and are things young adults face daily. This series may be YA, but it definitely holds my attention and provides hours of fulfillment.

TWs for the subject of an eating disorder and mental abuse at the hands of adults. Both these kids are subjected to overbearing adults in positions of power that bully them; Shaun with his dad and Kenji with his coach. Shaun feels afraid to speak up for himself, but Kenji is affected in a much more harmful manner. In this second-chance romance, Shaun must learn and be strong for them both as Kenji battles his way to a new normal.

I really enjoyed this story, and a lot of ice time was portrayed in the book. We saw the couples from the first two books, and Trent Hansen from Deep Edge, Harrisburg Railers #3, also by this duo, played an important role in the story. I love the cameos, but I also love how the Railers have plowed the way for these kids to be more comfortable in their queer identities. This series is a lot of fun and is a great hockey-themed series for teen and adult readers alike.

Happy Reading!

I absolutely loved this book!
I adore Shaun and Kenji together and they're perfectly matched!
The struggles and they are huge, they go through separately bring them together. They support each other, and care for one another mentally, physically and emotionally.
I wanted to be able to jump into this story and "Momma Bear" protect them.
However, I was very happy in how things were handled by the authors, and can I just say, and those of you who have followed these authors will agree, that they brought in a few amazing characters from past books that completely rocked what had to be done.
I will not spoil anything but know this ...gah!
Any hint I give will give it away. So, you'll have read it and see all who come in and help out. I swear I "Squeeed!' very loudly when I read a name, and my cat looked at me like I lost my mind. I explained my excitement in the appearance, she still doesn't understand. Her loss.
Both subjects Kenji and Shaun had to endure are very real and hard to read about but the loving way they were handled made this a 5 star.

Shaun and Kenji both have their own issues to fight besides the normal teenager issues. Shaun has a controlling father and Kenji has a controlling trainer. They are also fighting other issues that bring them closer together. While they seem like they don't have that much in common, they actually do. They are also each others rock. After years of not being friends they fall back into the same friendship they had years ago and it feels so natural to them. They are there to support each other through all the good and bad times.

This is a really nice teenage love story with minimal romance. No sex as the MCs haven't decided on that route. They have decided to be there for each other and enjoy the ride. They both have their school friends and family to help them along. Shaun's father and Kenji's trainer issues are dealt with in a reasonable manor. The world and character building are good. I enjoyed seeing the couples from the previous two books. Definitely worth the read, even for teenagers.

Consigliato.

Kenji (a figure skater) and Shaun (a hockey player) have a richly woven story. Despite both dealing with bullies in their life, they both show an inner strength that is to be admired.

Scott and Locey compassionately deal with mental health concerns, but do not shy away from the grittier aspects of certain disorders. This adds to the realism of the book.

As always, the authors excel at creating a found family on the hockey team and the couples from previous books in the series make frequent appearances.

For me, the real strength of this book was how well it showcases a strong and healthy relationship, despite struggles the characters are going through. While perhaps they exhibit a maturity beyond their years, their positive choices are a delight to read and made my little romantic heart sigh. 5 stars.

Trigger warnings for homophobia, eating disorders, etc. Both Shaun & Kenji are 17 and they used to play hockey together until Kenji switched to figure skating. They had been best friends at one point. Both share a love of history.

Some typos/inconsistencies:
“civil war Civil War museum”
“Shaun whom, who she smiled at widely”
“do you understand why Kenji might feel betrayed betrayal?”

Shaun’s dad was a jerk, constantly bugging Shaun to pursue the NHL, says derogatory/bigoted things about queer people especially Kenji. He finally was getting some help and apologized towards the end, but I disliked him for most of the book.

I think this might be my favorite of the series. I liked both Shaun and Kenji, especially Kenji. I would have liked a little more of Kenji’s family and Shaun’s friend group. 4-4.5 out of 5 stars?

Shaun: hockey captain, bisexual
Kenji: figure skater, pansexual

Dance on Ice is a great addition to the Chesterford Coyotes series by R.J. Scott and V. L. Locey.
I just loved Shaun and Kenji together. They are perfect for each other and their connection is amazing.
Kenji and Shaun were the closest of friends when they were younger. Their paths changed when Kenji switched from hockey to figure skating.
Both are dealing with difficult issues and find their way back to each other. I loved seeing them discover how deep their feelings for each other really are.
The road to happiness may not be smooth but it is so worth it for these two!

Best in the series. You will instantly fall in love with Kenji and Shaun. Not only is this book filled with the fast paced hockey games that we are used to but RJ Scott and V.L Locey take it a huge step forward and make the reader invested in having the wrongs come to the surface and the support that is needed to get through them. Connections are made and futures look bright as long as they have the love and support of each other to get through the hurdles in front of them.

This is the third book in the Chesterford Coyotes series. This book dealt with a young adult eating disorder in such a way that the reader knew it was a real problem without overwhelming them with the details. It was done extremely well. The characters and pace were just right. I love this series and this book was a great addition. Though this is third in the series, I feel it can be read as a stand-alone book.

Readers should definitely heed the trigger warning for eating disorder. It figures pretty heavily in the story. The authors treat the topic well, but I can see that it may be troubling for some. This last installment in the series features another young couple figuring out feelings and what to do with them. Shaun was almost perfect boyfriend material being so caring and protective of Kenji. They both had some personal battles to fight and found young love to help them through.
