Omega Force #6

Secret of the Phoenix

Rate this book
Captain Jason Burke has begun to suspect that the random attacks on his ship and crew over the last couple of years may not be so random after all. Evidence is mounting that there is something on the Phoenix ... something that powerful factions will stop at nothing to get their hands on. While Omega Force races to find out what is hidden on their ship that is causing so much trouble they also must figure out why such powerful enemies bent on obtaining it. They'll need to rely on old allies, and a few old adversaries, to unravel the mystery that's been hovering over them since they first stole the gunship from the treacherous Deetz so long ago. The crew is used to fighting long odds, but will they be prepared to sacrifice everything to keep the Phoenix's secret from falling into the wrong hands?

Disclaimer: I am very biased towards military sci-fi and this series has scratched that particular itch.
I am writing this review at a time when there are 13 books out in this series when I started the first one (yes, I wanted to binge it).
I really like this "season" of books that comprised the first six books, ending with this one. I especially liked this ragtag group of lovable rascals' character development over the series and am very much looking forward to the various other plot arcs that Joshua Dalzelle has left open (and with good effect).
This and the previous book (Return of the Archon) were 5* for me since the aforementioned character development really took off from there and rounded off. There's still some room for improvement with the editing, but it's way better than the first book was.

Josh must really love writing these books, because they are still fun to read. My biggest objection is the occasional use of certain curse words. This sort of thing doesn't bother most modern readers, but it tends to be a touchy subject with me and is a personal bias. Aside from that, joining Captain Jason Burke on his adventures in space reads like the old space ranger books from my youth (which was a long time ago).

I am amazed at the detail Josh includes in the books. I'll just leave that as a stand-alone comment.

Again, this book was a fun read - and it tied up numerous plot lines throughout the existing set of books. Even Josh said it was sort of the end of "Season 1" of the series.

I look forward to reading more seasons.

If you enjoy space adventures, or adventure stories at all, you'll enjoy these books, but the language isn't appropriate for younger readers, so be cautious about simply handing them off to the kids.

Wow! One of the best Omega Force books yet! Totally action packed throughout, and had some really awesome almost hard sci fi too. Loved the new Marines too - Galvetic warriors rock! :) Definitely worth the wait to learn the secret of the Phoenix. The moment I finished, I immediately wanted to go back and re-read the previous 5 books in quick succession to see how all the pieces came together in this 6th book. I didn't realize this was the wrap up book for a 6 novel story, until I read the author's note at the end, but it totally makes sense - and what an awesome wrap up! Very much looking forward to more Omega Force and also starting the Black Fleet series (now that I know it started after this book). This series should be made into movies! Heck, they are so well described that sometimes I feel like I've already seen them on the movie screen.

Dalzelle continues his trend of improving with each book, and here we find the culmination of a story arc that has been alluded to over the serie.

The A-Team meets National Treasure in space, is a reasonable comparable; but, perhaps for the first time, there is a hint that Dalzelle is capable of more than rehashing tired tropes. Alas, his tendency to run out of pages in which to cover the more interesting plot elements continues. There’s a fine line between an explosive finale and a rushed one, and the author remains stubbornly on the wrong side of it.

Nonetheless, the series remains an engaging romp, and I have high hopes of what might come if the rate of improvement demonstrated thus far continues undiminished.

Before you start this book, please realize it is the sixth title in the series: you will need to read the previous books in the series in order to understand the back story and the characters.

Without having a spoiler, if you enjoyed the previous books in the series you will probably like this one but there were quite a few scenes I just didn’t believe and it seemed to get “stuck” in a few situations – but since I did like the continued interaction of the characters I kept on reading.. I picked this up for 99 cents during a Kindle promotion vs. the normal price of $3.99, and I believe I received more than $3.99 worth of entertainment value out of it: if you enjoyed the first book of this series I am confident you will like this one, also.

Halfway between an 8/10: Excellent read, well written, fell right into the fictional world created & a 9/10: Fantastic, left me wanting more.

Despite all the petty bickering and fights over ridiculous things, when the chips were down his crew never failed to rise to the occasion.

It’s getting better and better. I’m attached to the crew and their captain now and love the world the author has created. Kellea was a welcome addition to the storyline for the romantic in me. And it was nice getting some answers at last in this instalment.

I’ll be gladly reading on to see what happens to one of my favourite spaceship crews.

Awakening To An Obvious Truth Finally

Since the first book of the “Omega Force,” series, the crew has displayed an unreasonably cavalier attitude towards the insatiable craving for their ship, the “Phoenix” by a multitude of enemies. In his sixth book, “Omega Force: Secret of the Phoenix (OF 6),” Mr. Joshua Dalzelle, has decided to clear up and clean up the ongoing plot line omissions.

Quick reading, simple action/character oriented story, written adequately well.

“Omega Force: Secret of the Phoenix (OF6),” is recommended and was fully read via Kindle Unlimited.

Four and a half stars. A very strong finish to the first Omega Force saga. Dalzelle has at this time already written five more books, so it is obvious that this isn't the end. It is a strong conclusion to the introduction and stratification of the team and the universe around them.

I like the interaction of the different members of the group and I like the swashbuckling adventures they encounter. There were some interesting twists, but as Dalzelle explained in an afterword, it's all good.

I really didn't want to like these books, but I do. Not 5 stars because I don't think the writing is at that level, but, although predictable, the books are very entertaining. After 6 of them, the characters are familiar and comfortable, if not particularly 'deep', which is probably ok for space opera.

I really think the authors' use of idioms by the main character is overboard and kind of ridiculous, given the circumstances of the story line. The universal translator used in these books would have to be unbelievably powerful to understand what Burke says/means!

This was as good as all the others were! Jason Burke's team headed to an unknown part of space to find a planet that was nothing more than a weapon made by a alien race that ceased existing a lonk time ago. AND, of course, every bad guy in the galaxy wanted it, so they could become "king." Anyway, Jason wasn't having any part of that.

No sex, just a kiss or two between Jason and Kellea. The F-bomb was used 8 times.

As for the narration: Paul Heitsch is fantastic!

Fun

The Omega Force series is not great literature, but it a lot of fun. As part of the series, The Secret of the Phoenix has all the usual characters. The mystery of the Phoenix add an exciting plot point and allows another dimension to the cartoon like series. Yes, Dalzelle could have delved into a lot more complex issues or added dimension to the predictable good guys, but as long as you keep your expectations low you will enjoy this mindless installment.

I use ratings to decide which books I am going to buy, and I recently decided I am partially responsible for inflating the ratings on books. Either they were 5 star or 1 star. I decided to use the star rating more objectively as follows:

★★★★★ Great book! Can’t wait to read it again (and I will).
★★★★☆ Good book. I am glad I read this.
★★★☆☆ OK book. Nothing special but not bad.
★★☆☆☆ Not good. Why did I waste my time?
★☆☆☆☆ Lousy. I didn’t finish.

We learn more

Jason and the rest of Omega Force have been concerned for a while about how it seems that they have been unable to find the details but it certainly looks like something or someone else is behind some of their problems. They finally learn more about the mysterious opponent as they also deal with a double cross attack by an opponent they thought was no longer around.

Great read

Was a bit slow to get into this series but I'm glad I did. Loved the flawed main character and the rest of the crew, each with its own peculiarities. This together with the action and plots make it a very enjoyable reading. Go ahead and give it a chance if you like sci-fi and adventure.

Great series!

This series has been a great read from beginning to end. Good adventures characters were fairly solid, story seemed a tad rushed at times but really came back in line and didn't nothing to hamper the story in the slightest. Solid recommendation on the entire series.

Here Here!!

It’s easy to enjoy reading about characters that learn and grow, with a depth beyond the construct. It’s satisfying to realize the author likely enjoys writing the works as much as you enjoy reading them. It’s great, to pick up a book and so easily be absorbed to it that you don’t want to put it down. Good Read.

Badder than a death star

The keys are finally out together that were seeded in the previous books. Jason's brain and kind heart are required to get him through to deal with an enemy that has decimated fleets of warships over a long span of time. He gets by with a little help from his friends.

Thanks Joshua for an enthralling follow-up for the Omega team
Cheers

That's more like it.

In my last review I stated that there was almost no sexual activity mentioned for any of these males spending so much time in space. It wasn't natural! Jason, at least, now has a regular partner. That's more like it. But what about all of the others?

Throughly enjoyed

After reading the 1st book in this series, I was totally emerged in the story and couldn’t wait to dive into the following installments. I can easily picture this being made into a mini series or a movie. Great job Joshua!

Very good

Excellent story. Shame Jason couldn't keep the drive capability. Guess it was all or nothing. Oh well guess it was for the best. The new characters are good addition. He is sort if the Lone Ranger on steroids😂😂

Farewell season one, on to season two

Surely if you invent a stupidity powerful weapon you would expect the A.I. To go a bit mad.
Great characters with lots of fun adventures.
I look forward to more from this series 😁

A great series

This book in the series finally answers the question of what is on the ship. It answers a lot of the background questions also. It has interesting characters as well as an intriguing storyline.

Season 1

You'll get it when you get to the end of this installment.

Anyone else cast the after that played Firefly's 'Wash' as Lucky?

Cheers Josh. Now, since this is 2020, I do not have to wait. On with Season 2!

PS. The Black Fleet books are worth reading as will.

A solid series which just gets better. A couple of questions are answered in this book and a few others are introduced. Joshua Dalzelle spins and interesting story that keeps the reader involved. Solid action and the crew keeps developing, which only helps.

Season 1 done

Just finished book 6. This is my first review that I have written on Omega Force after reading all 6. I have truly enjoyed the humor that is mostly subtle but keeps your interest with the characters. I'm on to number 7. All 6 were good reading.

Another good instalment - this series is all about character development. It's about the camaraderie between the Omega Force crew and some members of the Defiant. The series has progessed and I'm ready for the next instalment. This series is me all over. Love it!

The AI

It is nice to see both sides of the AI worry of either a rouge AI taking over or the type that Lucky has become and actually cares about humanity.
This one is a great read and kept reading until i finished it in all but one sitting!
