Pete Herr has spent the last 20 years educating and mentoring high school students. In that time he has watched thousands of children grow into young adults and tackle the challenges of life. He has been honored to receive NHS Teacher of the Year twice, and Cheektowaga, NY Sam's Club Teacher of the Year once, awards that he cherishes enormously because they all came from his students. In addition to teaching, Pete Herr has also directed many plays and musicals and served as the moderator of the school's Student Senate and Stage Crew. These are the jobs he loves because he can really mentor students towards leadership and success. A graduate of Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio, Pete Herr lives outside of Buffalo, NY, with his wife, Linda and his two dogs, Tilly and Quinn, the one-eyed pirate puppy.

I must first admit that I'm biased, since Pete was a teacher and mentor when I was in high school. That said, I really enjoyed this book. It came at a time in my life when I really needed to be reminded of some of these lessons, particularly the first one: you have a choice. My copy of the book is pretty beat up now, all bent out of shape and marked up, and I'm looking forward to taking a second run through to review some things and spend more time reflecting on the particular lessons that I've really let slip.

I won this book on the Goodreads giveaway.
The book is good - straightforward - clear in its mission.
I passed it on to my teenager after reading it and encouraged him to read it.
I have talked about many of the things in the book with my son over the years, but coming from an independent source may make it stick. Sometimes the advice coming from parents gets less attention as it is mixed in with the 'Clean your room' and 'Eat your veggies' that they are used to hearing.

This book is packed with excellent information to guide young people on the path to a better life. I suggest you read it and share the knowledge gained with others (young people, grandchildren...).

I am also a former student of Pete's and I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book from start to finish! It was written in a style that will allow it to be understood by all, whether student, teacher, or parent (or some combination of). Although all the advice Pete offers is pretty solid, I think that the most important part is the reminder that in life we have the ability to choose (be it a job, a friend, or a reaction to a situation to name a few). It is so easy to forget this , yet it is so important!
Pete presents all his advice in a clear and concise way, with a little humor weaved in, and there is a very good chance that if you read this book you will not only enjoy it, but also be able to easily apply what you learn to various aspects of your own life.
