This is a great little book and will be enjoyed by anyone who has ever listened to the BBC’s Test Match Special or any cricket fan. It’s fair to say that Geoffrey Boycott will enjoy the book too, given that he is quoted at length in it, including one very funny passage where TMS commentator Jonathan Agnew gave Boycott a Mastermind round on the specialist subject of . . . Geoffrey Boycott! Classic stuff. All the familiar cast of commentators are quoted at length in the book and it’s well worth a read.
A charming little book, much the same way that TMS is a charming easy listen. It's little more than that, but essentially this is the perfect toilet reading material really. A little book full of gems you can drop in and out of to read, chuckle at and smile.
If you love cricket, have listened to TMS and enjoy reminiscing, then you'll enjoy this book. I enjoyed the book but hoped for a more insight into everything around the radio institution, along with the famous commentary moments. Gentle humour for the aficionados.
A pleasing compendium of some of the best bits of the eternal radio cricket coverage provided by the BBC. Cricket is a bizarre sport when you think about it, taking place over the course of five days on a pitch where the action is as far away from the spectators as is humanly possible. It does however provide everything that makes great sport: feats of skill, endurance and athleticism; tests of courage, concentration and character; team dynamics and individual heroism. All of which is represented in these transcribed snippets, along with the other feature that a slow-moving, five day game allows - plenty of charming but aimless banter and by-play between commentators and summarisers.
Must read for fans of cricket and quintessential British humor. The likes of Johnston, Arlott, Blofeld and Agnew amongst others have enriched the game and entertained fans in their own unique way.
