Lynn Hagen loves writing about the somewhat flawed, but lovable. She also loves a hero who can see past all the rough edges to find the shining diamond of a beautiful heart.
You can find her on any given day curled up with her laptop and a cup of hot java, letting the next set of characters tell their story.
The word "mistress" for one of the heroes made me cringe. It's an okay start for a series -could have been great, but every time anything was happening it was quickly dismissed. I, for one, would have liked to see Aberdeen slaughtered, but his punishment or resolution was anticlimactic.
Harlequin style! I feel like I was watching telenovela. The drama..I really liked it. You just have to be in the mood. But there's some 'name' mistakes that totally thrown me out of the book. Hope this would be a series. <3 *fingers crossed*
I think I am going to have to leave this as a 3 star. I liked it, but Demetri really pissed me off. I hated his holier than thou attitude he had.
I HATED the term mistress though. Seriously? Then to claim it's genderless in the wolf world. Give me a break.
What's Justin going to do though now? I'm going to love watching him grow. Abaddon intrigued me, as well. Yeah, there are a lot of interesting characters: Caleb, Wulf, Zav, etc. I am really hoping this is a series because I want more. I can see a lot of matings between the vamps and wolves.
Oh my WORD. This book was WORK to read! I usually at least give stories like this 3 stars, because I know going in that they are not going to be anything really great, but it’s a guilty pleasure of mine. But this book was just awful! I liked the premise of the younger man falling in love with the older man who’d been in his life all along. I guess I hoped for a bit more of a sophisticated story, yet this just felt…tacky. I never felt the romance between Justin and Demetri, and the relationship felt sort of skeevi at times. And don’t get me STARTED on the whole ‘Mistress’ Justin thing.
Also, for some reason Caleb, Justin’s best friend (and Demitri’s son) who’s supposed to be so awesome-is a moron! Why on EARTH would he go to an asylum, obviously deserted to try to find their friends when it’s clear there’s no one there?!? With his superior wolf hearing he couldn’t tell there was no party, but didn’t realize there were other werewolves?? And yet he goes back AGAIN and drags Justin into more danger even after the first AND second time wolves almost got them.
And when Justin finally meets his father, the ‘king’ of vampires, an amazingly powerful being, he calls him ‘dad’? I just felt he should be referred to as Father or Sire or something. Dad just felt so anticlimactic. His dad was cool though, I liked him-he was ready to make up for lost time which I liked.
One big thing that really bugged me was the bad editing. TWICE I caught the wrong name mentioned at the wrong time; Demitri stood between Justin and somebody who wasn’t even in the scene! Caleb was chained up and yet he was also in the room with Justin? It happened one other time, outside the club I think. Someone was managed to move in front of…himself? Yikes. This author is an old hand at writing by now, and I know she has a million books out and a million more in the works. But please, for the readers sake, get someone to take a look before you release it to the public!
There were lots of other things that ningled as well. Just can’t recommend this book, it was terrible!
dude...mistress? It doesn't even make any sense. They have their own language so it makes no sense that they would use an English gender word instead of one of their own. Saying that "mistress" is genderless to them does not make it all better.
It started out interestingly enough. The only genuine blip in the first chapter occurred when the guys had to pick the lock to the abandoned building to enter it, yet never questioned how the hell all those people for the supposed party had entered if the place was locked up. However, these things happen. (In writing, I mean.) Not a big deal; merely unobservant characters.
But Chapter Two just made me boggle. Fairies, centaurs, other realms with a king? Those made me smile but okay. Only, then Demetri expositioned about how he, his father and his brother are ten thousand years old. So Hans, Demetri, and Elron have been around for that long. Yep. Completely makes sense. That would be about the time homo sapiens developed agriculture. Mesopotamia only just started out. Ancient Egypt was not in the cards for another seven thousand years or so. So what exactly do they all look like? And where did they get their names? Even allowing that they’re all from some other, fantastical dimension, this seems to be pushing credibility some. Even in a paranormal context. It’s not that I have an issue with ancient being running around in jeans and playing cell phone games. They can even talk in a relaxed manner if it makes sense with their more recent history. But there has to be a certain underlying gravitas for such characters, a breath of ages past, or the impact of being that old is lost. And in that case, what’s really the point of it? In books like these we usually get either ancients who talk and behave like teenagers, or they’re of the stuffy, starched variety (as in Demetri’s case, who honestly reminds me more of a vampire than of someone connected to a wolf). And both options lack that sense of age I mentioned, that echo of time.
And isn’t it odd that in most of these paranormal books where beings stop aging once they’re in their prime, those who have kids always look significantly older? Don’t make it a point that everyone looks young forever if you want to incorporate “older men”. Technically most of these guys are that anyway. Geez. It’s especially weird here since all we learn of how old the forever-young Demetri appears is when Justin thinks of how he has to be at least in his late forties. Implying that Demetri looks that old, because simply going by the fact he has a son of twenty he could just as well be thirty-five and up.
But what really ruined it for me was when Demetri gave his little explanation to himself about why he had taken care of young Justin. Simply because it was almost the same paragraph of exposition twice with just a few pages in between. Possibly to ensure the reader hadn’t missed it, but more likely because the author forgot it was already there, indicating a certain lack of attention. And with that, all my remaining expectations plummeted. (It doesn’t help that much later on he rescinds that exact explanation.)
To top matters off, there’s the Mistress issue. Why on earth did the author consider this a good idea? I completely understand wanting to use something other than mate (because it’s been used ad nauseam), but mistress as a gender-neutral expression doesn’t make sense. Why not use consort? It’s a nice word and one that would be highly appropriate in this case.
Speaking of words… We get lots of editing failures, such as indignity/indignation, steeped/steepled, flare/flair, riff/rift. Sometimes I wonder. And then I wonder why I am still surprised that such things are overlooked in published books.
Still. All that aside, likeable characters can save almost any story, right? Except Demetri is a jerk, and Justin’s silly beyond belief – and not in a fun way, alas. I can’t detect any emotional connection between those two, despite their protestations of love. At most it’s some imbalanced fixation. Do they ever even really interact, really talk?
And god, these people suck at communication. Everyone in this book does. It’s aggravating.
Okay, there is a single character I liked and who was not idiotic in some way: Wulf. What a nice, sensible guy. Pity his role was fairly small.
Towards the end things turn surprisingly gory. Just something to keep in mind for the more squeamish moods.
So now I am done and feeling decidedly unfulfilled. Ah well.
But there were a few times.. around the beginning or middle.... That there were NAME mistakes. like... It was totally supposed to be Justin, but instead it said "cole"... WTF?! Threw me completely off and well.. turned me off of the story.
Still.. it was quite an awesome read. Always love Lynn's work.
...but this is a recurring error from Siren. NAME MISTAKES! FUCKING LOOK OUT FOR THAT SHIT BECAUSE WHEN THE MAIN CHARA IS ABOUT TO BE F*CKED I DON'T WANT TO SEE SOMEONE ELSE MOAN OR GROAN OR SOMETHING!!
ugh... so annoyed by that right now...
Anyways.. again, still a great book/story .. possibly start of a new series? :D
Interesting start to a new series. Funny. .I got a different book cover than the one shown here. ...Hmmmm. ... Looking forward to more, even though I too thought the use of the title Mistress was really strange even given the explanation.

3.75 star rating. While yes, the "mistress" title was lame it did not make me want to throw the book for something so small. I enjoyed this story. I rather liked the characters and the introduction to Justin's father. I enjoyed the small banter between Justins lover and his father, also I enjoyed the feel of the friendship he had with his best friend. Yes, the story is what everyone would call predictable and been there done that but, that doesn't mean it was not enjoyable in anyway. So, I will stick with my rating.
I loved this book. Justin and Caleb have been friends since they were about ten years old. Cable's father helped take care of Justin when he got sick. Justin found out that he is half vampire and human. Caleb is a werewolf and his father Demetri is king over the werewolves. Abaddon is the leader of the vampires and Justin's father. Abaddon has been looking for his son for a long time. Justin is Demetri's mistress or mate. I hope there is another book with these characters in it. Erin
This is a 3.5. I was very excited to buy this book since I'm a huge fan of Ms. Hagen. It looked exciting and kind of edgy with Justin being in love with his best friend's dad and all. I liked the characters even if I was somewhat frustrated with Caleb. The part that turned this into a three instead of higher is the assistant to the Alpha, or in this case, the King. That is so similar to what Maverick's 'Assistant' did in Maverick's Mate (Brac Pack #1) that it threw me out of the story.
I liked this story although there are some glitches and a few, what I think are out of sequence events/disclosures. But let'a face it Hagen writes good candy and I finished this book in one sitting. I would like to see this spun out into a series as I was very interested in the supporting characters, especially vampire Lord Abbadon.
Maybe the 'mistress' term is lame, but we can't judge a book because of that term . Wolf King is lovely, it captures my heart. Reading felt like OMYGOD!!!. . . I praise Lynn Hagen for this wonderful book. I love Demetri!
I actually really enjoyed this. It was sweet and had a really wRm n happy feel to it. Like dreams can really come true lol. Yet another awesome find from Hagen.
