A wonderful trip down memory lane with so many happy and colourful stories bought vividly back to life and shared in a way that they were lived back in the 70s & 80s.
The book details the dedication of Pop (over several generations) to the sports education of the students, however, it also details the incredible efforts that he went to in order to expand and broaden their life experiences outside of the small town of Cannock.
It is filled with fun and humour from a time when teachers could also be friends and mentors.
The book is well written and a great read - even if you didn’t attend Cardinal Griffin School and had the delight of being taught by Pop as I was lucky enough to be.

Beyond four walls was an inspirational read about the journey of a Manchester lad that calved his own path into teaching physical education in a midlands school.
His dedication to drawing out the best in kids of all backgrounds and abilities and most times at personal time and cost to himself was not going to stop his mission to draw out the skills and confidence he spotted in his pupils, I had so many OMG moments while reading about the obstacles put in his way but strength of character and a belief in his purpose in all those kids he inspired saw him through all the peaks and troughs with a lot of humour and banter along the way , thoroughly enjoyable read I’d fully recommend

Lovely, well written, interesting and humorous book. Would highly recommend. A journey through the life of an extraordinary teacher in a different era of education, that exemplifies the way it should be done. Demonstrates broad care and passion for student inclusion and success… good reading for those considering the profession. The wider themes of team ethics, sportsmanship, workplace bullying, determination and a healthy approach to life’s ups and downs that we can all learn from make this a great book for everyone.
