War looms in Europe, and Casca finds himself the target of a German police investigation into the death of a Spanish national in a Berlin hotel. To escape discovery, the Eternal Mercenary joins the new panzer corps and soon finds himself teaming up with a giant of a man called Gustaf Beidemann.
As war breaks out, Casca, Gustaf and the rest of his crew are plunged into a vicious campaign that takes them through Poland. All this time, unbeknown to Casca, the police are closing in on him, thanks to the efforts of one man, Erich Farben. Farben’s progress is stalled when war with the West begins, and Casca, Gus and his friends rampage through Belgium and become embroiled in the biggest tank battle of the war so far against the best that France can send into the field.
Just when it seems Farben has got his hands on his quarry, a guardian angel, connected to Casca’s long, distant past, appears out of nowhere, intending to save the Eternal Mercenary from spending years in a Nazi prison.
An enjoyable return for the ancient Roman Legionnaire to 20th century warfare and his early days in WWII as a German Panzer leader. It was great seeing the larger-than-life Gus again. I've missed his presence and that of Felix, Steffan and Teacher in these stories since Casca's last days of WWII on the eastern front facing the advancing Russian Army between '43 and '45 in Panzer Soldier (#4) covering the gradual retreat and defeat of the Third Reich. It was also great to see a much older Gus rejoin Casca in African Mercenary (#12). Been too long without our crude giant!
I felt sorrow for the capture and torture of poor beautiful Heidi Rossler (our communist spy within the network) and joy at the emergence of a Longini family individual who takes upon herself an active role in the protection of Casca and the undermining of the Brotherhood of the Lamb.
This story talked about the Blitzkrieg or in German "Lighting War" advance of Germany's forces from Czechoslovakia (now Czech Republic) to Poland in 1939 until the swift spring campaign through Belgium and culminating in France.
With Blitzkrieg we have the beginning of Casca's adventures in WWII and Panzer Soldier brings about the culmination. I look forward later on to reading the middle chapter of the War with our Eternal Mercenary: Barbarossa (#42)
