Mid-20th century trashy action/adventure novels. They are like the classic B-movies of the novel world: both terrible and great at the same time!
I have been wanting to get my hands on a volume of The Baroness for a while now. I managed to pick up volume 5 and took it for a spin (I believe the series ran for about 7 volumes).
This is the epitome of the trashy '70s spy thriller. Lets check all of the boxes here: Gratuitous violence Gratuitous sex villains ripped straight from the current headlines (in this case we get both Communist Russians and Maoist Chinese) A plot that barely makes sense (The novel even knows that the plot doesn't make sense. It is about a super virus that came from the moon. At one point a character says something like "A first year science student could tell you that doesn't make any sense". The "expert" that he is talking to basically says "Yeah, I don't know what's going on".)
To get enjoyment out of a novel like this, you really need to understand what you are getting yourself into. If you think really cheesy movies with bad acting and terrible special effects are hilarious, then "classic trash" might be a genre that you could get into. Hey, if nothing else, they are great to practice your speed reading on because you can miss whole chunks of text and still not be lost.
