Chris and Alex can't stop bragging about their success at an outdoor survival camp until they find themselves trapped in the mall after hours by Mr. Girty, the sporting goods store owner and a world-class hunter. Mr. Girty and his Dobermans want to hunt something different now. Something more challenging. Something like Chris and Alex.
Hey, I made good on my promise to do something new. So here’s an obscure 5 book series from 1995 to 1996 called Doomsday Mall. It’s by Bebe Faas Rice, who did some YA work like the Class Trip duo. I don’t know much about these beyond them having a mall setting and they are rather hard to find. Only 2 are on archive and they were put up this year.
So may as well look at another spooky kids series from the 90’s. This one centers on Chris and Alex, who recently got back from Adventure Camp! The escalation point is in the name and they make sure it’s there with every mention. They had fun and learned a lot about survival and did well although they gas up exactly how well when they talk it up.
This catches the wind of the owner of a sports shop named Girty. He talks to them a bit before closing and reveals he is the descendant of a famous hunter who went off the rails and was hanged for hunting humans. He…wants to follow in those footsteps and wants to go after humans like he did.
The kids are his game for tonight, let it begin. Yes, that’s the premise, this is the Most Dangerous Game which is given a blatant shout out. This is about kids being in a mall after hours, with guard dogs after them too. Insane. The idea is dark and it leads to a mostly fun book. It gets started right away and doesn’t let up, throwing constant danger.
It can get a bit tiring but it’s short enough to go by fast. Their experience at the camp does lead to some bits with them using the skills which is good. We see that Girty may be possessed by his ancestor and that leads to some crazy stuff with him. The idea is more dark than the events but just the idea drives this one.
The ending is rather abrupt though. Solid climax and fine ending note but we don't have time for the kids to breathe before it just…stops. That makes this an odd book. Dark and solid but a bit empty. There’s not too much substance and it ends abruptly but it does have enough to be memorable. I like how their bragging gets them into it at least.
It’s a weird book but quick and fun. Not a must read but worth a look. I don’t know about reading others from the series but I am open to it. That does it for this, it’s pretty straight forward, nothing ultra notable with the writing either.
I don’t know what next is, hopefully a few new things for me but I got some old friends to catch up on as well. See ya then.
Fun fact, the cover art is by Jim Theisen, famous for doing the Stay out of the Basement cover. Neat.
