"Maybe I should also think about investing in a robotic milking parlour.’ Carla raised her eyebrows at him. ‘That’s probably the most romantic thing anyone’s ever said to me.’
There’s an immovable Mike’s dairy farm in Somerset isn’t going anywhere. Good things do come in small packages. "Not My Field" was a delightful little gift by author Ros Clarke. This short and sweet love story was so easy to read even with the British vernacular peppered throughout. I even had to google a couple of terms to discover what they meant - brown sauce, trainers, wellies, car boot. The word nerd in me loved it! For those who like their love scenes on the tame side, this short story should satisfy you as well. The conversations between Mike and Carla flowed well and were very true to life. That the story was about two mature adults and not angsty young adults provided a refreshing change of pace. Of course, mature doesn't always equate to wise. Circumstances in both of their lives had them hesitant to commit to each other and the "holding back of vital information" lead to obvious misunderstandings. Communicate, communicate, communicate! Easily read in an hour, "Not My Field" was an enjoyable break in my day and a great little treat.
