Seva by Sharanpal Ruprai is a poetic journey into the life of a Sikh girl; the narrative, through unique perspectives about culture, gender and ritual, enters a world that is usually inaccessible.
A really beautiful and accessible book of poetry about Sikh life, a Sikh girl and coming of age. I liked the simple poetry of this book and found it moving.
I think it will be more familiar to people with knowledge of Sikh culture.
These poems are powerful in their portrayals of the complex beauty and tension of growing up Sikh in Canada. At times playful, at times poignant (and often both), I highly recommend getting your hands on this poetic exploration of family, love, coming of age, and culture.
This was a beautiful read. Certain poems were a little difficult to read/understand because of repetitive words and lack of punctuation - hence, 4/5 stars.
I found this book on our shelf for ‘new books’ at the library, and read it in one sitting. I truly enjoyed her life experience stories in poems. Having Sikh background was a plus because I was able to relate. When I first looked at the book, from different segments of the book, I was afraid that it would be about religious lessons or something, but no. it is a mixture of traditions and modern values and a woman’s experience and reflections made it special.
