Award winning author Rosie Hendry lives by the sea in Norfolk with her husband and two children. East End Angels is the first book in her uplifting and heart-warming saga series that follows the lives and loves of Winnie, Frankie and Bella, who all work for the London Auxiliary Ambulance Service (LAAS) during the Blitz. Listening to her father's tales of life during the Second World War sparked Rosie's interest in this period and she loves researching further, searching out gems of real life events which inspire her writing.
First off I must admit that this is the first book I've read by this author. For this reason I was totally confused at what Rookery House was with all these people living under the same roof. In fact, I still don't know after reading it to the end. I appreciate that these Rookery House stories all relate to one another, but books that are part of a series should also be able to be read as a standalone story as well. To that end, the author shouldn't assume that the reader has read others, in fact the importance of descriptions and explanations cannot be over-estimated. I found nothing in the book to tell me the function of Rookery House nor why the inhabitants all lived under the same roof. The Hall was also mentioned, and I assume that this is where Lord and Lady Campbell lived. Was the hospital in the Hall too, I can only assume so. It may be that I missed something but I felt really confused from the start.
It was a nice little story but not amazing. I may have enjoyed it more if I'd read others in the series.
Fantastic read, as the rookery house books continue, the way it comes alive in your mind as you read about the characters. It’s always disappointing coming to the end. Looking forward to the next book . Well done Rosie another winner
