He can teach her to protect herself, but protecting his heart is another matter.

A madman determined to win…

As the deadly game of cat-and-mouse with Brit heats up, so does the hunger between Con and Jess. Safety might be found in numbers, but in bed, all bets are off—and the wrong move could lead to heartbreak. Or death.

4.5 Gripping Stars! Wow, this took me by surprise, as in a....hell yeah, that was good...kind of way!

In the grand scheme of things and considering the complex plot, this isn't a long book, but it's a story that's bursting at the seams! I never expected such a sweet love story to be woven into this brutally intense read, and I loved all of it!

You're immediately drawn into Jess' plight when her psychotic ex, Brit, confronts her. He is obsessed with her and enraged that she won't come back to him. But, this time, Conlan, who's been watching her from the sidelines, steps in and puts himself between them and breaks up a potentially volatile situation.

Jess wants to move forward, put her past behind, live her life, but she's constantly looking over her shoulder. The extent her ex went to, to keep tabs on her, was unnerving, made me shudder and look over my own shoulder. I felt all the cruelty and pain she suffered through. Jess had the heart of a lion and was so determined to live a normal life, I was rooting for her through the whole book.

Conlan...WOW... so tough on the outside, but on the inside he has a tender heart and a soft spot for Jess. When he finds out the degree of all that she has endured, her disturbing past and the truth about the brutality her ex inflicted on her, well, there isn't anything he wouldn't do to protect her.

They find comfort and strength in each other, and Jess helps Conlan too, as he is battling his own demons. Along the way they fall in love, and it was sweet and fitting, a nice balance, considering the overall volatile nature of the story.

There was an exciting edge of your seat ending ! I love when an author has the ability to stir up my emotions; my blood was pumping, I was holding my breath, and it was a race to the finish!

However, there is one area where I believe the author missed the mark. I wanted a little more about Brit and his family, and their reaction to his obsessive behavior and cruelty, that part of the plot didn't fully evolve in my opinion, and could have added another interesting layer to the story. But, even without that, it was still an impressive read.

Teach Me is a powerful, disturbing tale, that had me gripping my Kindle and gritting my teeth. Ella Sheridan knows how to build anxiety in a reader, but also adds a sweet sexy side to the story, that brings them down from the adrenaline high. This was romantic suspense at its best!

I really enjoyed this.

It opens with Conlan in a coffee shop hoping for a glimpse of the girl he likes (although has no intention of approaching), after he has not seen her for 2 months.

Jess is recovering from a horrific attack from her ex boyfriend, who has powerful connections and an iron clad alibi for the night of the attack, and as such, Jess is feeling very vulnerable as nothing can be done.

When her ex approaches her outside the coffee shop, Conlan steps in and saves her and then, recognising the situation, offers her the help of his company, that specialises in offering self defence and security for women in Jess' situation.

Conlan is determined to not act upon his feelings for Jess, due to her situation and his own history and demons.

I really liked both Conlan and Jess. They both had demons to fight, Conlan on an emotional side, and Jess, with a truly terrible ex. Think more Criminal Minds than just an abusive ex.

In a way, Jess was braver than Conlan, willing to move on and try for a relationship, despite her history, and wanting to learn to fight back and take back control of her own life.

But, I adored them together and Conlan would have given anything for Jess, even before he even truly realised his own feelings himself.

The build up to the final showdown with the ex was perfectly tense and nerve-racking. It had me feeling nervous and unable to put the book down, and hurting for Jess and Conlan and what was to come.

All in, a hugely enjoyable 4 stars and I hope Jack gets a book.

But why not a 5? Well, I have to admit to being a bit eye rolley when Jess turned out to be a virgin, but I could see why the author made it so, I just did not expect her to be so, and it was added as a fact rather suddenly and unexpectedly. Also, the plot line of some sort of elite security, offering protection, then ofc, the villain getting the drop on them unexpectedly is a bit obvious and over used.

(audiobook+ebook) I wasn’t much engrossed in the romance, but I still enjoyed the characters and their story quite a lot.

Conlan has been lusting after Jess without knowing much about her for some time. Of course, Jess has been too. It’s Jess’s complicated situation–her ex has beaten her and walked free, and is now harassing her–that brings them together, as Conlan will make his mission to protect her. But not at the cost of his heart.

He becomes her bodyguard, and sure, he’s guarding her body, even from herself at first. While she’s offering herself, Conlan denies his feelings for, in my opinion–and his friend Jack’s–stupid reasons. But that game of will they won’t they creates some delicious tension between them. A tension resolved with a bang when they finally do the deed.

It’s only the fact that they go from one to twenty in a few seconds that kept me out of the romance. It’s one thing to be attracted, but that kind of obsession isn’t healthy. And the way they quickly become each other’s forever was a bit unbelievable. But they had chemistry, I can admit that.

Domestic abuse and manipulation are at the heart of the book. They’re the reason behind Jess’s need of Conlan, and behind Conlan’s rejection and his job, and everything is tied up in a pretty deadly bow when the ex keeps coming back. While there’s not much suspense in the suspense part of the story–the reader knows who the bad guy is, and they expect a happy ending–it’s still riveting, thanks to the characters. Be it Jess’s justified anxiety, or Conlan’s fear for Jess’s safety.

The narration was duet style and perfect. The male narrator did the voices of the hero and the bad guy, and the way he could express both was incredible. The female narrator did a great job too. A solid audiobook in a solid series with solid narrators.

Quickie

- Series: Southern nights #1 (can be read as a standalone)
- Hashtags: #romantic suspense #virgin
- Triggers: domestic abuse, violence, torture, murder
- Main couple: Jess Kingston & Conlan James
- Hotness: 4/5
- Romance: 4/5
- + I love it when the bad guy gets what he deserves
- – pining from afar, then falling in love in a few days, not really believable

Jess has survived a brutal attack from her ex, Brit and is finally starting to live her life again. Although Brit hasn’t paid for what he did to her – life must go on, even if the man she fears is still out there somewhere.

For Conlan, he knows that it’s a mistake coming into the café each week hoping to see the brunette that has captured his attention, but he still finds himself standing in line every Monday just hoping for another look. When he spots her in the parking lot caught in what appears to be a dangerous situation he doesn’t think, he just acts.

Knowing situations like this rarely end well, Conlan urges her to take control by learning to defend herself. But Conlan had no idea at the time he’d be the one teaching her, the one that has to suppress his urges to pin her down while rolling around on showing her how to escape an attack.

One thing is certain, their physical attraction is off the charts – even if Conlan is convinced he is not relationship material. But when Brit refuses to let her go, there is only one way to keep Jess safe and Conlan isn’t about to let her out of his sight.

Teach Me was an enjoyable read that not only gave you immensely hot sex scenes, tension filled moments of buildup – but it gave you a heroine that was much stronger than you would have expected. Sure she still had her own demons to fight when it came to letting go of the attack, but in reality those events could have left her huddled in a corner, living in fear for the rest of her life. She refused to give up completely and I have to say that it was a nice change of pace to watch this woman chase down what she wanted.

Conlan was the damaged hero type. All alpha, but with some hard lessons when it came to the vision of what he expected love to be. It took this one some time to see that what he saw has life ruining love, wasn’t in fact love at all. But in the midst of these two coming to terms with their attractions and emotions; they faced a far bigger threat. A man that had every means at his disposal and the inability to take no for an answer.

Although the story involved more than just these two characters, I didn’t get much of a feel for the others. The focus remained on the main characters and the plot as it unfolded, which worked really well for the direction this book took. Had the side character become too large of a part of the story I think my mind would have wandered and I would have lost focus on where the story was going.

This romance turned quickly into a suspense, and although I expected some of the turn of events, the overall storyline and the shift made this read much more than expected. This was my first by this author, and given how much I liked this one I have no reservations about continuing on with this series.

"Teach Me" started off really well. I was so engaged with it I thought I was in for a treat. Turns out I wasn't going to get my treat. It started to take a downward spiral when the heroine, Jess,

In the end, I leave it up to you whether or not you should give this a read. While I may have issues with certain aspects of this novel, you may not, and if that's the case, I say give "Teach Me" a chance. You might just end up loving it.

Smokin, so good you won’t want to put down. Throw together a hero who refuses to allow love into his life, a heroine who has survived a deadly beating, and a deranged psychopathic ex boyfriend, and you have the makings of a unstoppable thriller. Well written, steamy, and suspenseful. Has everything a great book should have.

Spoiler Ahead This was a pretty good read better than I thought it would be. When Jess Kingston parents are killed in a car accident she finds herself depending on her boyfriend for direction and support. Brit turns out to be an abusive as*hole. He refuses to let her go and almost kills her when he attacks her and almost beats her to death. Because his family has money the police are no help and she has no.
When a sexy man steps in and saves her, she feels hope for the first time.
Conlan James is a survivor he I'd ex military who lost his best friend in war. Con doesn't believe in love after his best friend was dumped. Con rescues Jess from her abusive ex. Jess turns to Con to teach her how to fight. This was a really good book with lots of action in it. I loved the fact that Jess was willing to fight back and not just roll over. This book was also hot and steamy. This was my first time reading this author. This book was well written with no errors in grammar or spelling. I am looking forward to reading the next book in this series.

I found this to be a surprisingly good read. It was the perfect blend of suspense and romance and I was immediately drawn into the world of Jess and Conlan.
From the moment Con sets his eyes on Jess, he wanted to know her. And when he finds her scared, he wants to be her knight. Con is facing his own demons because of incidents that happened while serving in the military. He is not looking for a relationship or commitment.
Jess is immediately drawn to Con and his strength. She is now on own and she must learn to defend herself incase her ex, Brit comes back for her. I liked Jess as a character, I thought parts of her storyline weren’t believable.
I think sometimes the storylines were glossed over and some characters were forgotten. Despite these minor issues, I didn’t think it detracted from the story. It was still a good read.

3.75-4.0 RATING- A "new to me" author which was perfect guilty pleasure reading for me: damsel in distress, stalker ex, and sexy security expert hero (who happens to ride a Harley). The writing was good and the steamy parts were well done. I liked both characters and thought the mix of suspense and romance was well balanced. A couple eye rolls towards the end but overall, I really enjoyed. I couldn't put my name on it but felt just a little something was missing. It may just have been that my reading kept being interruped, I'm not sure. Still, very glad I found this author. The book was just what I needed. Moving on to the second book in this series which is Jack's story.

I don't want to sound too mean but I don't think the author had the ability to mix so many elements regarding abuse and the need of a woman to feel secure in a story where the relationship evolves the way it does and the book ending with the main male character asking the heroine to say what she does say in the final scene.
The characters weren't that well portrayed and despite some interesting promise in the beginning, I skipped a few scenes here and there and this didn't turn out to be such a good read for me...

Another five-star read from the fabulous Ella Sheridan! She has a way of capturing your attention from the moment you start one of her books. Add in her fantastic narrations and you really can't go wrong.

Conlan James has been such a captivating character in her Southern Nights series that when I found out this was his book I girly screamed. I knew the woman who would captivate his heart had to be one hell of a woman and Jess is. She has been through so much when Con meets her and even before he really knows about her past, he is entranced by her. Not just her beauty but her presence. Except, he doesn't do relationships and he can tell she is a girl for relationships not for one-night stands.

Jess Kingston is still recovering but there is something about Conlan James she can't let go of. She knows if she gets her heart involved, she is going to get hurt but she can't help herself. As Con helps her heal not only mentally but physically the ghosts of her not so distant past start to catch up with her and before she knows it her and Con are put in danger more than once. Jess would rather risk her life than the people she cares about including Con.

Jess's ex must be stopped and Conlan doesn't trust anyone but himself and his team to do it. Will Jess & Con end up losing everything before it ever really began?

Jason Clarke, as Conlan James was my absolute perfection. Do you ever just read about a character and know who should voice him? That was me with Con, the way Jason can get his voice so deep where it sounds like he has been gargling with nails just hits all my sweet and not so sweet spots. Stella Hunter was emotionally captivating. Jess was a force and Stella really brought that to life.

At this point Ella could write me a sonnet on a post it note and I would cherish it forever. Teach Me had everything I love in a good romantic suspense from page turning swoon to a bit of blood and the tiniest bit of murder. Let Conlan James teach you a couple things you won't regret it!!

Teach Me by Ella Sheridan is a gripping and steamy romance that will keep you on the edge of your seat. With a strong alpha man and a courageous woman as is signature for Ms. Sheridan, this story is full of passion, danger, and heart-pounding moments. The chemistry between Jess and Conlan is palpable (those self-defense lessons!), the plot gripping, along with my dream team of narration – Stella Hunter and Jason Clarke – enhancing the story even more with the charisma, emotion and depth of their performance, all together providing a steamy, suspenseful listening experience, perfect for fans of romantic suspense.

This is the first book in the Southern Nights series, and will leave you wanting more!

Jess is the victim of domestic violence. Only her abuser seems to be above the law and in hiding. Then, a chance encounter with the hot biker she has been eyeing for months changes her world.

Conlan co-owns and security company that also teaches self-defense to women. He has been watching Jess for months, and is intrigued. When he sees her outside the coffee shop one day, she is obviously scared.

These two… I didn’t know if I should root for them, or punch Conlan in the nuts for being an idiot! The dynamic these two have is beyond words. I love that he is patient with her and helps her get through the tough times. His patience is tested on more than one occasion, because let’s face it, she is tired of being in her situation.

With lots of planning, and some bad luck, everything comes to a head and the results are not pretty, but beautiful all at once. I won’t explain this, because it will give too much away. But know that, it is worth every bit of pain and emotion that comes before it.

There are quite a few editing errors, and timelines that don’t quite add up in the version I read. It did make me have to go back and re-read a couple of chapters to make sure I wasn’t crazy. Overall though, I really enjoyed this book. It was the first book I have read of Ella’s but I will be back for more! ~ Devlynn, 4 stars

Ok read. This story had potential, it just had too many typical ideas that I could almost foretell what was going to happen, while I kept on hoping this book was a romantic suspense. And I felt no connection with both H and h.

Teach Me has a sweet, traumatized h with an abusive, stalker ex who's making her life miserable. The H has been going to the same coffee shop as her and is attracted, but doesn't interact with her until he has a knight in shining armor moment to protect her from the crazy ex. They're both insanely attracted to each other and he's immediately protective of her, but in addition to the threat of the ex, the H is a commitment-phobe who does a lot of pushing away. The book is written in third person, dual POV and there's no ow drama/scenes. It's been a bit since the H was with anyone, but I don't remember it being specified and the h is a virgin.

I loved the H once he was fully on board with the relationship, but I was frustrated with why he was holding back initially. The h also gives in to their attraction repeatedly, even after he's pushed her away, and I would have liked her to not be quite so readily available. I did feel they had a lot of chemistry which led to steaminess.

Sometimes I found myself reading more for the suspense of the story than the romance. Definitely a trigger warning for abuse/violence against the h by the ex, which is graphically described. How easily the ex evades everyone and still gets to her was a bit unbelievable, even as it led to that suspense. In addition to the H trying to protect her, there are some great side characters surrounding them who are also protective and supportive.

The book ends with a HEA and an epilogue several weeks into the future. I'm always a fan of extended epilogues and one here would have been even better given we see so much of her in danger and traumatized. The H's best friend's book is next in series so I'm sure these main characters will also appear in that and other books.

Pain is temporary...quitting is forever...

Ella Sheridan is gifted in writing a gratifying display of suspense and romance throughout this story. Conlan James personifies everything you would expect from an Ex-military man. He is big, brutal and in your face with the instinct to protect those in need. Working for JCL Security ticks all of his boxes. He is devoid of any commitments in personal relationships. When he saves a young woman from a dangerous situation, he is immediately drawn to her and he is thrown for a loop.

Jess Kingston has left her violent ex-boyfriend after a brutal attack from him and is trying to build her life back to normal. She seeks help to learn how to take control of her fear. Conlan is that man. She is confused that she is drawn emotionally and physically to Conlan after just coming out of a vicious relationship. She should be turned off men completely after that experience. Their attraction to each other is undeniable. But Jess is inexperienced in all things and she feels Conlan is not interested in long term.

The suspense in this story is off the charts exciting and has you on high alert through their story. Conlan and Jess's journey was emotional and definitely a rollercoaster ride you won't soon forget.

**Audio Review**
Teach Me by Ella Sheridan was a wild, suspenseful, and steamy ride that gripped my attention and squeezed my heart from start to finish. Ella Sheridan has quickly become one of my go-to authors for romantic suspense with broody former military protective alpha males, and vulnerable heroines who learn their own self-worth and strength! Jess and Con’s journey to HEA had all of that, plus the SPICE, and did not disappoint!

Stella Hunter and Jason Clarke narrate this audiobook in duet and in third person. Both have been amazing throughout this entire Southern Nights series. Stella captures Jess’ persona perfectly empahszing her vulnerabilities, desires, and evolving confidence in her performance! (Yes, lady!) Jason once again wowed me with his ability to transition so flawlessly between protective, charismatic hero, Con, to sinister, creepy villain, Brit! (Talk about chills!) Both narrators also brought the passion and the heat with Jess and Con’s undeniable magnetic
chemistry! (swoon!)

Overall, I loved this book! If you are a fan of romantic suspense with a hot loyal private security consultant, a fierce, sassy heroine, a coffee shop meet cute, hot self defense sessions, a jealous stalker ex, danger, suspense, steamy first times, a jaw dropping climax, and a HEA that will teach you that love conquers all, then you will love Con and Jess’ story! I always look forward to more from Ella Sheridan.

DNF @ 66 percent. Warning - this review is going to get explicit. I'm a romance reader -- I'm into formulas, but the tropes were not well executed. The hero had paper-thin reasons for being a commitment-phobe (they involved a friend dying in Afghanistan, but it's not what you think). Of course, that all went out the window when he met our heroine. Another issue I had was that this guy was ALWAYS hard -- multiple references to his erection in each scene (even the non-steamy ones). I don't know if men really walk around in a constant state of arousal just from looking at a woman that they would like to, um, be with, and I don't want to know. And I definitely don't want to read about it. Add in a virginity sub-plot and a nonchalant broken-condom scene (I stopped reading before finding out, but my guess is it will end in a pregnancy). No thanks!

The title is misleading, just so you know.

The problems I had with the book were only because they were personal preferences I don't like. Virgins, insta-love, crazy exes... but I can say the author handled all of those pet peeves of mine with style.

However, it is written in third person, and for me, it makes it harder to connect with the characters. Again, that's on me and shouldn't be a reflection of the book itself.

The main characters are sweet and believable. Conlan was pretty dreamy. I only wish Jess could be a bit more of the badass Con tried to get her to be. I'm not a fan of a weak heroine who needs the man to rescue her.

3.75. It didn't quite make it to 4 for me, but there were some really awesome moments in this one - sweet ones, scorching hot ones, crazy ones, and a few unfortunate cheesy ones, but that's to be expected in this genre. Overall a nice romantic suspense to get lost in.

The levels of suspense and heat in this book are just what I needed. Loved the characters and the backstories. I would like to know a little bit more about where Con came from, his history and more about his past aside from his friend who died. Also, I'm surprised at the end of the story that Con didn't mention more about the gun. He said something along the lines of "If something already happened to her, this gun has two purposes. One for Brit and one for me." Which basically said the same thing he was against for the entire beginning of the story. Taking his own life because of his love for another. But in one line, he went back on everything he'd stood for in the beginning.
Either way, still 5 stars for me. Love love loved this book. On to book 2!

Distinctly indistinct. The grammar was fine. The syntax was fine. The story wasn't awful. But it was like the author was following a prescription for a romantic suspense. "Broken" hero who actually shows every sign of being a perfectly good person? Check. Virginal damsel in distress? Check. Unambiguous bad guy? Check. A smidgen of danger followed by a dash of sex and hey presto - they're in love! Of course they are.

It's all very beige and uninspired. It never feels suspenseful because we've all read this story a thousand times before.

P.S. How have these two never heard of the morning after pill/plan b?
