Nola Chambers has one goal in life: don’t end up like her mother. After Nola's father dies, her mother falls into a never-ending cycle of depression, heartache, and failed relationships that leads Nola to conclude love is dangerous and must be avoided at all costs.
And her plan is working like a charm. Nola's a year away from finishing college, works full time, and is doing a pretty good job of taking care of herself…until she meets Scout and her world is turned upside down.
Scout Clayborne is young, rich, and devilishly handsome, but he’s also alone. After being born on the wrong side of the tracks and being raised by abusive, drug-addicted parents, Scout doesn't even believe love is possible....until he meets Nola and sees something in her that he just can’t resist.
Despite being drawn to each other, fear, doubt, and secrets from the past threaten to derail their relationship before it begins. Can Nola and Scout overcome it all to find happiness together, or will their challenges be too big to surmount?
"I looked like an older, sexier, more sophisticated version of myself, complete with blemish-free tawny skin, smoky hazel eyes, and ruby red lips."
Why do I continue to torture myself? Ironically, while having a wonderful and honest discussion about the documentary "Dark Girls". Guess no one cares how pervasive and damaging the hatred (yeah, I'm calling it that) against dark-skin really is.
This had the makings of a really good story-if not for Nola "Darling" Chambers. This young lady was the whiniest thing I've read in a long time. The author tried to insert this feminist mystique about her, but she came off as just the opposite-weak, unsure, and one who makes bad choices in the name of declaring her independence. Yet, while reading this, I had to constantly remind myself, this girl is only 20...
Nola Chambers is a 20 year old college junior (?) who is all alone. Her father OD'd when she was 10, and her mother basically checked out emotionally leaving her essentially parent-less. She's not only in school on a partial scholarship, but working round the clock to support herself. Life sucks. Job sucks. She's on the verge of flunking and losing her scholarship. She meets a man named Scout at a cocktail party where she's moonlighting as a server, and they strike up a convo that leaves them both wanting more long after they part ways. Scout is so enamored of Nola, that his borderline stalking her-tracking her down at her job and giving her the hard sell as to why they should get to know one another better. After some back and forth, Nola finally agrees to see Scout, and this is where I really become annoyed with Nola.
I get that she is used to doing things on her own and not having to rely on anyone for anything, but you have to know when to accept help from people you claim to love and who tell you that they love you. Scout was hardly a perfect man, but he had the means and the willingness to help Nola not only financially, but offer her the security and emotional support that she sought with her mother. All the No, Scout...I can't let you do that Scout...Girl, shut up and let this man help you!!!
The story ended somewhat on a cliffhanger, and as much as I did not care for Nola, I found Scout to be endearing in his own way even though he tends to come on a little strong, but what alpha male does not? I hope there is a conclusion to the story and would like to see Nola mature because with the direction of events leading to the end, she will need to get her grown woman on to deal with the aftermath...
I liked this story and I thought it was going to be the one, you know the guy is an alpha male but shows you his softer side and the girl is like a little tough but not to tough to lean on her man when needed and then in the end they will live HEA.
WHATEVER - Scout was tough, at times his behaviour was like a love sick puppy dog, to early in the relationship to have those kind of feelings especially since in the beginning they were all one sided.
Nola was tough and independent at first, I liked her, she knew where she was, where she was going and what she had to do and sacrifice to get there. Ok so she hardly had enough time to sleep and was working her butt off to pay her school fees and at the same time had to keep her grades up, I get that, who doesn't.
My problem with her is that around the middle and towards the end of the book she seems to cry a lot. "Somebody please give her a box of tissues". While Nola had issues of abandonment by her mother, something you get to read about throughout the book, Scout's problems regarding his upbringing don't seem to get the same acknowledgement, even though his inside and outside scars should be worse.
Felt the end was sort of rushed, I wonder if there is a part 2?
I gave it 3.5. Point 5 was for the amount of pages.
yep the hero falls like BAM. seriously crazy nearly obsessive love. heroine kind of clueless. kind of on the fence with this one. I liked aspects of it but I didn't fall in love with it. the cover sold me honestly, and I really must remember to STOP basing what I hope is going to be an awesome read on the covers.
you could give this a try. it was a fast read for me. not a lot of depth, but a lot of repeat of the past. I tended to skip the whole rehashing of daddy died and mom checked out.....now I don't wanna fall down the rabbit hole.
Cons: This is not a black woman in white and romance. The female in this book is biracial however the mill is Caucasian.
Second of all did not like the way the book ended it in it with a cliffhanger as though there's another book but however there is not.
All in all it is a good book. Two kids from broken families meet and fall in love. One who made from the slums and one who did not want to be like her mother.
This was a good book, short read. This is this first book I read by this author and it was great. I love how they both overcame things in there life and depended on one another. I was saddened to about the situation with her mother and wish things could be different between them. I was also mad that she did not stand up for herself more often. All in all it was a good read.
The ending wasn't what I thought it would/should be,but I won't complain to much. The characters were different from the norm, but that's what kept me interested in reading it.If I have enough complaint is just that there were a lot of unfinished plots
