What Happens In Scotland #2

So I Married a Highlander

Rate this book
A Lady’s Rules of Etiquette When Eloping:

1. A lady should never leave a note behind explaining her intentions.

2. If by chance a note has been left behind, a lady must prepare to be hunted down and the ceremony thwarted.

3. In such a case, seeking consolation with a night of excessive drinking will be tempting, but ill advised.

4. And lastly, a lady must never, under any
circumstances, wake up manacled to a deliciously handsome Highlander.

Lady Evelyn Alexander has managed to break all four rules in the space of an evening—and the tall, virile Highlander she accidentally married is only the beginning. Her fiancé has also mysteriously gone missing and the threat of scandal is hot on their heels…

Alec McAllister has no use for a wife, but when he wakes up entwined with the lovely and spirited Evelyn, he’s willing to reconsider. He’ll help her find her fiancé, but when the passions ignite between them, it’s only a matter of time before the Highlander claims what’s his…

Good fast read but the ending was lame. I needed a cute epilogue with babies. My other problem was the heroine. She is too arrogant too spoiled and she treated hero like dirt! So i would have given this 3 stars but bitchy heroine made me lower my rating.

WHAT A DISSAPPOINTMENT!!

Lady Evelyn Alexander, sister to the Duke of Arlington elopes with her fiancé Lord Stephen Crawford. They elope to Gretna Green Scotland. Evelyn in search of a blacksmith to marry them is sent to Alec McAllister blacksmith shop. He refuses to marry her and Stephen.

The next day Evelyn wakes up chained and shackled to Alec with soreness between her legs. She sees blood on the sheets and knows she has done something wrong. She wakes Alec up only to fine they are married. Okay this is crazy. I should have stopped reading at this point. But I kept going. I just knew that Alec was some titled Scott a part of the Scottish or British aristocracy. But no is just a Blacksmith!! That was very disappointing to me because the story hints that he might be a Son of an English Lord and he was but he was illegitimate. I was hoping he would turn out to be the legitimate heir to the Earl! Big disappointment.

ARC from NetGalley for an honest review.

This was a short read with insta-lust/love. It's a steamy read with two characters that are immediately drawn to each other but fight the attraction.

Lady Evelyn is eloping with her fiancé, who she likes but doesn't love. They have arrived at Gretna Green to marry and are now looking for someone to perform the marriage. Unfortunately the infamous blacksmith that they were hoping to perform the ceremonies is booked up. Lady Evelyn has no time for waiting due to her brother being not far behind wanting to stop the marriage. They are informed of another blacksmith, Alec McAllister who occasionally marries couples.

This is where are hero, Alec and heroine Evelyn meet. It's instant lust and confrontation. Alec's not really wanting to perform any marriage ceremonies. During this time Evelyn's best friend Gwen shows up along with her brothers friend, Matthias to stop the ceremony. A argument then ensues that leads part of the group to a taproom at an inn, where Evelyn becomes foxed. The next morning Evelyn wakes up with Alec in bed and both find out they are now married.

The story takes off from there with her fiance gone missing and the search that ensues. Alec and Evelyn contending with their marriage and what will happen. These two have a strong pull towards one another and are figuring out what or if these feeling mean anything. We have a tortured hero and a strong minded heroine working through their desire, feeling and future.

This was a fairly quick read. Not much character development and light on plot. But a fun, hot, and quick read to past the time.

This is book two in the "What Happens In Scotland" series. I found this book to be a stand alone book, although I did read book one "How to Lose a Duke in Ten Days". This is a short, sweet, emotional read that I had to read it in one sitting. I couldn't put the book down! I would have loved it to be a little bit longer book but that because I enjoyed the story and would like to have kept it going a little more. I also wish that the first part of their story was shown more than for them to have 'waken up" and it was done already. Lady Evelyn Alexander, is our heroine and she has decided to runaway with a suitor, to elope. This is were she meets the "blacksmith", our hero:Alec McAllister. Evelyn wants Alec to marry her to her suitor but while trying to convince him her friends show up to stop it. This puts her 'wedding' off and she and her friend go drinking..where she wakes up the next morning married to Alec and that begins there story.

I know I didn't get far in this book and I was going to try and force myself to read more of it, but I just couldn't.

This book is set in 1815 in Scotland and England but you wouldn't know it for how the characters acted. I couldn't get passed that. Evelyn is a titled English lady, sister to a Duke. Yet she gets sodded at the inn and spends the night with a man she just met hours before.

I just couldn't go on. I wanted to like this book, if I have read more I might have. The book description sounds great, like this will be a funny one, but I won't be finding out.

I didn't give this book a rating with only have reading 27%. It just didn't feel right. I try and not give a rating unless I have read a little bit more.

I received this ARC Copy from NetGalley in exchange for my review

Writing:

I honestly didn’t think it would be as steamy as it was and so it is outside my normal realm of reads but the writing was ok. The storyline, meh. Girl gets drunk, marries hot Scot, they have a lot of sex while looking for her fiancee, they divorce, she pines for him and ta-daa, they get back together and live happily ever after.

Because that’s a totally healthy basis for marriage and relationships.

It’s also not true to the time period in any way so it’s a rather indulgent story which is fine if that’s what you are into.

Cover:
It communicates everything the book is about.

Main Characters:
Alec: He’s everything you’d want in a rogue Scottish blacksmith. Handsome, aggressive, jealous, tries to do right by the girl until she pushes him beyond temptation’s limits. Tries to stay married to her. Helps her find her fiancee and let’s her divorce him. But then he shows up to try and marry her again. Guy is a glutton for punishment if you ask me.

Evelyn: Irritating and supposedly fiery. She’s a selfish tease who doesn’t know what she wants. I mean she gets drunk, marries a stranger, acts all hoity-toity, loses her virginity to a stranger (has no remorse over this), let’s the guy have his way and supposedly enjoys it, divorces the guy, pines for him, and ta-daa he shows up and still wants to be married to her because he just can’t get enough of her.

Um, what?

Plot and pacing:

Not incredibly imaginative and really fast. The tension of lust was definitely felt but no actual feelings of love or remorse or any other feelings for that matter. Which is why it’s a shocker when the Alec show back up and is all like “Marry me”.

Inconsistencies:

If the ones I’ve already mentioned don’t bother you, by all means, read the book.

Romance:

This book definitely rates as STEAMY on my rating system. It was a raunchy and explicit romp with little depth of romance and primarily lust. There was way more steam than what I expected based on the description.

(See She Would Readfor my romance rating system.)

3.5 rounded up to 4 on this one. I liked the characters and it's an amusing setup, but the relationship between the hero and heroine never fully develops and then all of a sudden they're like, BUT WE LOVE EACH OTHER and I'm like, but why? I mean, there's great chemistry between the two, but not a real respect or intimacy. Also the end does not at all resolve where or how they are going to live. I felt like I was going on in this cute little story that maybe didn't explain a lot of things terribly well and then boom THE END. I guess the writer wanted you to pick up the story with the sequels? But I don't really feel much incentive to spend $3.99 on the sequel. Maybe if it goes on sale I will give it a chance. Til then, this is a cute story, and if you're into Highlanders and humor you'll probably get a kick out of it.

Very good book! I loved the main characters and the side characters as well. Lady Evelyn is eloping with Stephen to Scotland. When they get to Gretna Green, the line at the popular blacksmith’s wedding area is very long and she decides to find another blacksmith. She stumbles into Alec McAllister’s shop, there are no couples waiting there to get married, but she finds a shirtless Alec.
Alec feels an instant chemistry with Evelyn and makes a bargain with her, he will marry her and her fiancé, as long as she grants him a kiss. She reluctantly agrees and between them the kiss is hot and full of chemistry. She decides she still wants to get married, but she has friends who followed her and interrupt the wedding.
So an unmarried Evelyn decides to drink the night away and who does she see watching her? The hot Scottish blacksmith Alec. Alec tries to help her, tells her she has had too much to drink, and tries to escort her to her room.
They wake up the next day married to each, neither is exactly sure how, but they have a certificate to prove their marriage happened. Evelyn wants to annul the marriage and find Stephen, who disappeared into the night, and she knows she needs Alec’s help. Will Alec help her or will she fall under his spell?
This book had some really sexy passionate scenes and was just a lot of fun to read. I am definitely going to look for more books by Kate McKinley, this one was really fantastic!

4.5 stars!

After finishing this little romp, I decided I needed to revisit historical romance. It was my first love and I haven’t been back for way too long. Kate Mckinley put together a sassy foray into the Scottish highlands with an uppity English virgin and a rakish Scottish Blacksmith. This is the second book in the What Happens in Scotland series but can be read as a stand-alone.

The story starts with Lady Evelyn Alexander and Stephan Crawford trying to usurp the power of her brother, the Duke, by eloping in Scotland. It is to be a marriage of convenience and power even though Stephan has some questions about his heritage. But very quickly, things turn messy. The Blacksmith who can marry them is surly Alec McCallister. Once he lays eyes on Evelyn, he is done for. He knows he should stay away from her but can’t help himself.

So much witty dialogue in this story! Loved Evelyn’s sass! Loved that she was able to bring Alec to his knees. And, hello, hot, muscle bound man in a kilt! Whew! Wonderful steamy read. Great to see a woman of the time period decide that love trumps duty. I look forward to reading this author again!

** I received an eARC from NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review**

3 stars

I read and really enjoyed the first book in this series, but I didn't enjoy this one nearly as much as How to Lose a Duke in Ten Days.

This book is about Lucas' sister Evelyn and a blacksmith named Alec. Evelyn has eloped to Gretna Green in Scotland with a man named Stephen Crawford. Her brother does not approve of Stephen and forbid them to marry - hence the trip to Scotland. Once they arrive, Stephen goes to secure a room at the inn and Evelyn goes in search of a blacksmith. She finds Alec when the first blacksmith was too busy. Alec at first refuses to marry them - but then after demanding a kiss, agrees. Just as the ceremony begins, Evelyn's friend Gwen shows up with Matthias (her brothers friend) and her maid in tow. They stop the wedding and the ladies retire to the inn and proceed to drink themselves stupid.

Alec comes to the inn and is confronted by Evelyn - who is trashed. They end up spending the night together and wake up naked, chained together and married. It is never really explained what happened and when they are woken up, they find out that Stephen and Emily (the maid) have disappeared - apparently Stephen was shot and was taken by Emily to the hospital in Glasgow.

Evelyn decides that she must follow him there and Alec agrees to take her. From here the story takes a nose dive in my opinion. Evelyn says she grew up in poverty before her brother became a duke - but she acts like she has been pampered her entire life. Alec also presents with a lot of contradictions - a lot of things are hinted about him, but there is no follow through.

I have no idea when or why these two fell in love - but apparently they did.

The story ends with a HEA and sets up possibly two future stories.

Bottom line - the first book was great - this one was OK but frustrating to read. There is a lot of modern verbiage (which doesn't really bother me - but I know it irks some readers) there are also some totally over the top unbelievable events - to really enjoy the book, you will have to let go of reality as you know it. I wouldn't go as far as to say pass on this book, but I would caution readers that it is not a traditional regency.

Poorly written ridiculousness

Here’s how this novel goes:
English Lady (EL) heroine goes to Gretna Green to marry the man her brother, the Duke, has said she shouldn’t. She meets Handsome Highlander(HH) blacksmith, instant attraction ensues. The anvil marriage is delayed, heroine goes to the local tavern to wait for her unsuitable fiancé, gets foxed, and handsome Highlander escorts her to her room. She asks him to stay with her. Reason for such an unsuitable request is never made clear.

The next morning she EL and HH are discovered naked and shackled together by her best friend, the Duke’s best friend and a lady’s maid and it’s soon discovered that Handsome Highlander and English Lady have somehow “accidentally” married overnight. Unsuitable fiancé is no where to be found, but rumor has it it that he was shot in a dispute over night.

English Lady flaps and flutters around declaring that she “must find him” and wants to travel alone to Glasgow where he may have gone for medical treatment with the also missing lady’s maid. Handsome Highlander husband says no, a battle of wills ensues, English Lady submits when he kisses and fondles her objections away. Off they go to Glasgow...

That, my friends, is how the rest of the novel goes: she objects and gets huffy, he overrides her objections/huffiness with various forms of seduction and sexual intercourse. She then gets mad that she succumbed to his “charms.” Round and round it goes.

Bottom line: This novel is poorly written fluff and little more than a catalog of sex scenes. I don’t mind a bit of hotness in my romance novels, but I also require something that reads like a coherent story. In this novel, characterization is shallow and the plot is highly contrived ridiculousness. There is little to no attention to period detail except for the lip service paid to “preserving English Lady’s reputation.” I really have a strong objection to female protagonists who”spit and sputter” like outraged kittens only to be soothed into submission by the always ridiculously handsome alpha male. This is stereotyping at its worst and is not very interesting reading.

Rated 4.5 out of 5!!

Lady Evelyn Alexander has come to Gretna Green to marry. She would be back in London preparing for a wedding if her brother had not of forbid the marriage. Evelyn knows what she wants and she is determined to get it. She just never would have thought her actions would have such outrageous complications.

Alec McAllister cannot believe the turn his life has taken. Not only did he wake up married to an Englishwoman, but he finds he is not quite so put off by the idea of marriage to Evelyn. Although she insists on hunting down her missing fiancé, Alec cannot help but agree to help in her search. All he knows is that somehow, some way he must prove to Evelyn that their marriage is not a mistake. ,

SO I MARRIED A HIGHLANDER... the title is so fitting. I am only heartbroken that it did not last longer. I always find author Kate McKinley's work entertaining and fresh. SO I MARRIED A HIGHLANDER is oodles of fun! It truly is an adventure from beginning to end. Evelyn and Alec are so alike in the stubbornness. I loved their story. I impatiently await Ms. McKinley's next masterpiece.

This is book 2 in the What Happens in Scotland series.

Lady Evelyn Alexander has run off to Scotland with her fiance to get married, but when family friends catch up with them those plans are foiled. Spending the night drinking instead of in her marriage bed she is surprised to wake up next to a naked Highlander...the blacksmith that was suppose to have married her.

Alec McAllister has no wish to be married, but when he wakes up next to the beautiful Evelyn, he is willing to reconsider. They soon learn that they are legally married and have consummated their marriage. But Evelyn's fiance has disappeared and she is determined to find him. What else is a husband to do, but follow his wife??

I really enjoyed this story and wish it had been a little longer. I loved the verbal sparring that Alec and Evelyn did and the chemistry between them was red hot! I can't wait to see what McKinley has in store for us next!

Thanks go out to Kate McKinley via NetGalley for a copy of the book in exchange of an honest review.

Seriously, the hottest highlander ever! Alec is unknowingly caught in a mess, married to the sister of a duke on her way to elope with her fiancé. A crazy evening of events has Alec and Evelyn married and having extremely intense intimate moments. The automatic zing between these two is electric. The story of his tortured heart is captivating. He is a strong minded, powerful hero with an attractive confidence and sexy brogue. Not to forget Evelyn, she is very independent and yet fearful of her commanding brother. She is the perfect match for the Scottish blacksmith. Thanks to the publisher for my review copy through Netgalley.

This very quickly told story of eloping Lady Evelyn falling for blacksmith Alec left me feeling as if there should have been more – more about Evelyn and her betrothed (Stephen), more about what happened the night she married Alec, more about Alec and his family…just more. I enjoyed the instant attraction between Evelyn and Alec and have to consider this book a fairy tale or fantasy as this would not be typical behavior of a virgin from the upper classes in 1815 – or I don’t THINK it would be. It was not a bad story BUT it would have been better, in my opinion, with a bit…more.

Thank you to NetGalley, the author and Season Publishing for the copy of this book to read and review.

Alec is a manly man, “I’m afraid it’s not as easy as all that, lass .” He allowed his gaze to travel up her very luscious body. “The marriage has been consummated.” And would be consummated again and again, if he had anything to say about it." I really enjoyed this book it by so fast that when I got to the end I was like this is it? There's no more? I can't wait for another book by this author.

Well this was not what I expected at all. I couldn't call it a read it was a scan. I was put off by the leading lady. The sex was steamy but paired with we are going to enjoy it, but we are getting a divorce. Just didn't work for me. I also didn't know getting a divorce back then was that easy. Just not realistic and just not my thing.

Enjoyable

This was an enjoyable romance with a touch of humor at the predicament our heroine Evelyn found herself in. After running away to Gretna Green to marry Stephen, the man her brother, a Duke, had refused to allow her to marry, Evelyn wakes up to find herself married to the handsome Scottish blacksmith Alec McAllister instead. Rather than go into all the details as to how that came about, I will just say that this was a fun story and that I loved the chemistry I felt between Evelyn and Alec. How a Dukes sister remains married to a blacksmith is interesting in itself and I found the whole story enchanting but it ended so abruptly and felt like there should of been more details about Alec that were never revealed and that is the reason for my four star rating instead of the five that I would have given it otherwise. The romance was wonderful but I just wanted to know Alec better and have the story not end as abruptly as it did. I felt that there was more needed in both those areas. Other then that, I found the story very enjoyable.

Absolutely priceless! I love this quick tale, complete with sexy mountain of a man, feisty slip of a woman, and an adventure that will have you rolling with laughter as it warms your heart with its tale of love, found in the most unusual place. Trying to defy her brother and marry the man she thinks she should, Evelyn takes off to Scotland to do just that...alone with Stephen. But in her haste, impatient as she is, she stumbles upon a man that makes her heart race. When Stephen gets himself in a pickle, she finds herself on a wild goose chase cross-country, trying to catch up with him, with a highlander no less! Alec knew the moment he saw her crossing the threshold of his shop that he was a goner. But what do you do when the woman that makes your heart trip is there to wed another? And even worse, when she wants you to help her cross the unsafe countryside to follow him? Ach! What next?
This light, humorous tale will have you rooting for their love, even as they battle the many outside forces that seem to want to keep them apart.

Cute and well written Historical English romance mostly set on the Scottish side of the boarder with everyone running after mismatched eloper-want-to-be couple.
Lady Evelyn Alexander has decided to make her own future, the first step is eloping with a secret bastard Lord in the Scottish marriage town of Gretna Green. Stephen sounds like a nice person, but he is clearly holding back his own secrets and it is fortuitous that Eve marries Alec McAllister in a drunken Vegas style spontaneous marriage. I think marrige is a serious commitment and people should have to wait a few weeks for the 'bans' or clear heads before making a lifetime commitment. So Alec is 100% sure about his choices, but Eve is given a second chance. Don't worry there is a sweet HEA.
I bet Alec is the real Earl and Stephen is caught out in the next book? This is a series of short stories, but also stand alone book, so don't worry about cliff hanger endings.

Good short read, but I have a few bones to pick lol

1. If the book is based sometimes late in the 1800's the sex parts of this book are a bit more like this current century,

2. The heroine is too arrogant, a bitch, spoiled, did Insay bitch, who for someone to be so well educated she acted more la a savage wihout proper education.

3. The book ending was soooooo freaking lame, it literally made me mad that I read this book for nothing, like really this book had a great pontential and deserved an awesome ending, but no, the ending was too rush and left simply blah, like if the author was saying fuck it whatever I want to be done with this bitch so I can start my next one.

Overall I liked the book bits and pieces, but I still believe book could've been more better

Great story except. ...

Loved the story but in literature spelling mistakes are critical. If it wasn't noticed by the author, then the proofreader should have caught it. Especially when the word was used several times. In the barn she picked up a "pale". Pale is a color. A "pail" is a bucket used to carry good and water to animals. If it had been a typo it would have been used once. The word was repeated several times and used in the wrong form each time. Auto correct is wonderful only if you know what the word is supposed to be. Loved the story but the scene in the barn ruined it for me.

So I Married A Highlander is a fabulous historical romance by Kate McKinley. Ms. McKinley has provided readers with a well-written book. The characters are outstanding and my favorite part of this story. Evelyn arrives in Scotland, determined to elope against her brother's wishes. She wakes up the next morning shackled to Alec. Alec and Evelyn's story is loaded with drama, humor, spice, action and madcap adventure. I enjoyed this book from cover to cover and look forward to reading more from Kate McKinley soon. So I Married A Highlander is book 2 of the What Happens In Scotland Series but can be read as a standalone. This is a complete book, not a cliff-hanger.

My guilty pleasure

A cute, fun and fast read. It's exactly what I expect out of a Highland/English romance and I and "I am satisfied with my care." Lol. I'm not so sure I believe the memory lapse-getting-married-literally-shackled-together-consumation aspect of the story. But I guess Kate McKinley is going for a type magical quality to Scotland. Since I apparently, according to certain reports (so I might as well embrace it), have a so-called fetish for Scottish men, I clearly can suspend belief for Kate's story and simply sit back and enjoy the ride. 😁

Unexpected Scottish Vacation

The Duke 's sister elopes to Scotland with Stephen only to find nothing is going as planned. Her brother 's best friend along with her friend Gwen appear to stop the wedding. The Blacksmith Alec, disapproves and is reluctant to officiate. Everyone ends up drunk with confusing results. But most perplexing is Evelyn ends up married to Alec, the Blacksmith. A fun romp with hot, steamy nights as everyone tries to sort it all out.

At times Evelyn pissed me off with how she treated Alec. She can be unnecessarily mean and acts like a spoiled brat. Meanwhile Alec at times is way too "do what I say" to Evelyn. I'm not sure why the two of them fall in love, other than their lustful feelings for each other. I wished the author expanded on their non-lustful feelings more. I'm also not crazy about how quickly that ending came about.
