Think playful pandas and you have a “what if” tale of transformation that will transport readers into a moonlit night of wishes and fantasy. Pandamorphosis is a visual adventure that explores the unintended consequences of getting what you wish for. Follow a night of magic adventure as a young girl’s passion for pandas, her pet kitty, and pandas on the loose create fun and mayhem.
Anne Belov has been a pandamaniac since childhood. Four years ago, a chance encounter with an Atlantic Magazine story on pandas reignited her obsession. Since then, her online cartoon The Panda Chronicles has been gaining fans in leaps and bounds. The wish to have pandas in print led her to publish the first book of collected cartoons, and the second soon followed, with more books in the series in the planning stages. A serious painter, as well as a panda punster, Ms Belov resides in the Pacific Northwest where she presides over the Institute for Contemporary Panda Satire. Her main regret in life is that there is no MacArthur Grant awarded in the field of Panda Satire.
A beautifully-illustrated wordless book by Anne Belov, one of my favorite artists. This story of transformation is whimsical and enchanting, with a lovely, dreamlike quality. Every page could be a framed work of art.
Author-illustrator Anne Belov imagines a magical world in Pandamorphosis to delight children and captivate adults who share this tale with their young readers.
Narrative Pandamorphosis fascinates me because of its total absence of text. Instead of words, children are immersed in beautiful illustrations that spin a whimsical tale of magic and mischief. One moonlit night, a sleeping child's cat makes a wish, and the pet is a magically transformed into a panda. The girl's beloved stuffy panda also comes to life, and the pandas have a romp around the house as the child dreams, blissfully unaware of the mayhem happening around her. Is it real? Is it a dream? Young readers must decide.
Illustrations Belov's beautiful drawings are standalone works of art in themselves. Bathed in hazy, soft colors, they paint a tale of magic and mischief. Best of all, they weave a storyline for children to observe and discover, and add their own unique interpretation.
Unique Features The art in this book is gorgeous and is a treasure to behold. Colors pop off my tablet’s screen in the e-book version. Without giving too much away, I adored Belov’s inventive Pandacam and the way she uses it to move along her whimsical story line.
The book’s logical sequencing of visual prompts is excellent for developing critical thinking and language skills in young readers. Children can add their own narrative to each page, creating a personal, read-aloud tale. Adults can guide their toddler’s language formation as they read together. Teachers can use the book with beginning writers, showing Belov’s visuals for storywriting prompts in the classroom.
I don’t know if technology allows or would interfere with the art, but Pandamorphosis would make an amazing interactive reading app. For instance, children could tap on the cat to hear its meow, or swipe on the faucet to make the tap overflow and then clean up the mess by swiping the other way. Another idea: children could record their own voice and storyline over the tale. But these are concepts to explore for the future, and they do not diminish in any way the current offering available in digital or print formats.
Recommendation I highly recommend this beautiful book for children who are toddlers through grade 2. Educators will weave this book into their literacy and language development curricula while Pandamorphosis will also delight children and adults with its art and enchanting story.
Admittedly I love pandas and am a huge fan of the panda cams. (National Zoo, Zoo Atlanta, and the San Diego Zoo) It is through a love of pandas, the panda cams and Facebook, the I met Anne Belov, an extraordinarily gifted artist. Anne has entertained me for years with her hilarious panda satire. But when she created this amazing wordless, magical book Pandamorphosis I truly came to appreciated her talent as an artist. As a children's librarian (currently taking a break) I am always looking for good books. Pandamorphosis is the story of a cat who dreams of being a panda and actually becomes one while her little person is sound asleep. And oh the adventure this kitty has courtesy of a little moon magic. The art work is stunning, the story line is very amusing, and when morning comes you wonder, "Was it just a dream or did it actually happen?" You will have to read it to decide for yourself.
