François Bourgeon is a French comics artist, author of several noted European comic books. Bourgeon was originally educated as a master stained glass artist, but difficulties in finding employment and a passion for drawing altered his course onto a different career. Getting illustrations published in magazines from 1971 eventually led him to pursue graphic storytelling and to develop his craft over the next few years. When the Les passagers du vent (The Passengers of the Wind) series was serialised in Circus magazine in 1979, it became recognised as one of the most important European comic series of its era. His graphic novels have ranged from nautical and medieval historical fiction to science fiction, and characteristically, within settings of violence and sexuality, epic stories revolve around strong female characters. I could be shelving this tome as the series' second masterpiece in a row if it was in my native language but there were too many details that I couldn't understand appropriately and many terms that didn't seem to translate well enough.
Here's my qualm instead of a deluge of praises: Up until this tome I found Mary's unbelievably inbred face interesting looking and a keen commentary on the upper crust of England at that time in history but eventually I became increasingly bothered when looking at it and sometimes even disgusted because her eyes are just so unnaturally small and shockingly far apart with her absurdly high cheek bones and mouth that's so compressed that the corners don't even make it to the edges of her nostrils- all of which is made worse by the look of incredibly vacant stupidity that I see most of the time.
To keep riches "in the family" it was something of a first cousin fiesta over there and the country was only like half of an island anyway. For clarity, no incest is necessary to be inbred. It's just like the religions that, to this day, don't breed outside of their own flock- which surely factored into England's situation back then with that Catholics versus Protestants animosity.
Plus, the matter wasn't scientifically outlined back then so there was no "proof" of the risks of such seedy breedery. Nowadays there is even genetic testing that is used to see if a couple is too inbred without their knowledge which helps avoid certain diseased and such.
A book-unrelated tangent (I'll try to be brief): I could write an essay on the whole thing because I've lived in a neighborhood for most of my life that is nearly entirely composed of a highly orthodox religion. Because of "the news" most seem to think only of terrorists when they hear the words "fundamentalists" and "extremists" but every day I'm surrounded by those who combine both yet are not a threat whatsoever to anybody but their children who they give risky genetics to because they won't breed outside of their tiny percentage of the population. Most don't even return a friendly nod, if they aren't keeping their gaze awkwardly averted, or a neighborly "hi" when walking by. I've been repeatedly told that I portray an "honest face" and a welcoming demeanor yet neither help me overcome a total outsider status. Yes, it bothers me famously.

Terceira história da série "Passageiros do Vento", eles agora estão em África, onde observam em toda a sua crueldade a escravatura, mas ali também se pode ver que no meio dos "pretos e brancos", há toda uma série de intrigas mesquinhas que mostram, mais que tudo, que tudo que não seja um homem com uma arma na mão, pouco ou nada lhes interessa em termos de respeito. Com Isa e Mary a serem vistas como "carne branca", elas terão mais um problema do qual terão de lidar: a cobiça de outros homens brancos.
A história é boa, e os desenhos bem cuidados e realistas. A palete de cores é bem viva, especialmente os tons de amarelo e laranja, representando o sol inclemente de África, por vezes confundindo com as cores da savana litorânea. Em suma, é agradável e realista.
