This is the second novel for Welsh learners by Lois Arnold and is a good follow-up to E-ffrindiau and her book of short stories Cysgod yn y Coed. It is aimed at a higher level and is suitable for anyone doing Sylfaen or Canolradd. The story is engaging and funny with some good set pieces (check out the Eisteddfod and the hospital protest), and the characters likeable. It can be difficult for learners to find books written in contemporary Welsh which are enjoyable without being a struggle to understand and requiring repeated recourse to a dictionary, but Ms Arnold seems to be able to navigate this difficult territory well.

I know, I know, it is well-known that I stan for Lois Arnold (as the yoof would put it) but this is exactly what I hoped for when I finally had this book in my little dysgwr mitts.
Sgŵp is mostly a slice-of-life novel, peeking into the day-to-day goings-on of a young trainee reporter as she finds her feet with both career and family. While the main plot is a slow-burner, the language and setting is engaging throughout: you can easily picture the surroundings of Pen-y-Bae as Lowri climbs, walks and cycles her way around the town.
What bumped this up to 5 stars for me - I was originally going to rate it a 4 - was the second half of the book. Lowri is relatable and likeable, but her frustration with and it was just about starting to wear on me when I hit the second half. As I've said in other reviews, that's my favourite type of ending.
Less dramatically, It's this that helps spark the enjoyable dynamic between them, despite their worlds-apart backgrounds.
In terms of the technical stuff - I've just finished Sylfaen 2, and didn't struggle with grammar or story. Of course, there's new vocab, but as is usual with learner's books, the words you're less likely to have come across are in the footnotes and there's a full geirfa at the back. It'll also help to be familiar with De Cymraeg structure, although particularly De phrases have the Gogledd equivalent included with the English translation. Like all of Lois Arnold's books, the writing is very accessible: Sgŵp may be chunky, but it's easy to pick up and put down without sacrificing the enjoyability (you may not want to put it down once the second half hits, though). Interestingly, there's an official Facebook page for Lowri Glyn (linked) advertised on the back cover. However, it's been inactive for quite some time - a shame, because that's a really neat tie-in.
In any case, this is a keeper. I'd recommend grabbing Sgŵp if you've liked any of Lois Arnold's previous work, or you're looking for something larger but learner-friendly. In particular, this would be an excellent follow-on if you've read and enjoyed Ffenestri, particularly the Canolradd section. I really do hope she releases more full-length novels like this!

Mae'r llyfr hwn yn bleserus ac yn defnyddio Cymraeg ddigon syml ar gyfer ddysgwyr sy' yn cyfnodau cynnar o ddysgu. Wi'n awgrymu eich bod chi yn rhoi cyfle iddo fe. Darllenais i llyfr poblogaidd arall ar gyfer ddysgwyr, Bywyd Blodwen Jones, ac er gwaetha'r llyfr yn fyrrach, ffindiais i fe yn fwy anodd i'w fynd trwy. Nes i'w orffen fe, ond cymerais i amser hir. Mae Sgwp wedi bod yn fwy gyflym o ddarllen.
I found this to be a really enjoyable and fairly easy read for an early Welsh learner. Sgwp is only the second book I've read in Welsh, the other being Bywyd Blodwyn Jones. The experience of each of these learner books was very different for me. Embarrassingly, it took me more than a year to work through Blodwen Jones; I got through Sgwp in a month. Something so simple as the fact that Sgwp looks like a real book (and has some length to it) made me feel more motivated and willing to give it a go, and more importantly, to do it more often. Most of the chapters are about 4 pages long, so it's easy to pick up and put down a little a time.

Y peth dw i'n ei hoffi am storïau ar gyfer dysgwyr yw eu bod nhw fel arfer yn gorffen yn dda. Roedd y stori hon yn gyffrous ac yn ddiddorol iawn! Do'n I ddim yn gallu aros am ffeindio allan sut fydd popeth yn gorffen. Baswn i'n dweud bod y stori'n dda ar gyfer lefel canolradd yn fwy na sylfaen, ond mae'n neis iawn ar gyfer uwch hefyd. Mwynheais i'n llawer!

Another good book for learners. The only criticism was it was a bit long and followed various tangents, they all got somewhere in the end but it is a little bit off putting in a book for learners to have so many (what seem to be) tangents. I'd have liked it to be a little shorter. However the main plot was compelling and the words are fairly easy to follow for the level.
