Historical novel, based on a little-known aspect of history: a tiny Pennsylvania community, known as Asylum, was established as a refuge for Marie Antoinette by a group of exiles from a France torn by Revolution.
A historical fiction based on the unfortunate "necklace incident" of Marie Antoinette, which was one of the three main factors that led to the downfall of the French regime. The book was too much fiction & not enough history for me, however.
"Sorrow and joy are two depths of emotion, two opposite poles. But they both flame within one. Joy bursts its bounds so that finally the elation and the body seem to rise into the blue like two butterflies, floating, soaring, mating... But sorrow is caught, confined within the shell, straining, storming, to be released until every fiber of the body pains unbearably with the imprisonment."
unusual story plot and very heavy reading. but it was a good story, just very slow reading. a lot of history facts in it. its one of those books i had for years and just kept putting off reading. never made it past the second page. then one day i just decided to make it to the end of the chapter and slogged my way threw the rest.
