A short story of a duped bride running away to the Carolina coast to process her feelings regarding her non-wedding and now ex-fiancé.
The setting was richly described and I could easily imagine the scene and the impending weather. The analogy of Carrie running along the beach was a fitting parallel to her evading the challenges in her life. I could feel some of Carrie's anger, guilt, and sadness but after reading to the end, it ultimately came across as shallow and expected rather than sincere. She was more preoccupied with letting down others than the heartbreak she is supposedly feeling over the loss of her love.
The story was too short to provide the forced, trite happy ending and so for that I can't rate it highly but the descriptive setting did notch up my rating.
Beach Towel is a short story by Grace Green and takes place in Emerald Isle, NC. A woman is deceived and hurt by her soon to be husband and one of her bridesmaids. She flees before the ceremony and runs away to the beach to nurse her wounds. Sweet story of loss and hope.
I bought this short story because I love stories/books with North Carolina settings, and I'm also fond of Emerald Isle. Other than the reference to Mike's (which could be anywhere, now that I think about it), it was hard to distinguish this from other coastal settings. I also wish the story had lasted a little longer, since I had a hard time with the fact that, at the end of the story, the main character was going out with her ex-fiancé's best man so soon after leaving her guy [almost] at the altar. It seems like there could've been more to that decision, more angst or something.

“Beach weather could be glorious or brooding, and there was comfort in both.”
“Sand might shift with wind or tide, but it didn’t really change, it just rearranged itself.”
“There was only one place to run. Emerald Isle. The place, idyllic in my memory, where I’d visited my dad’s parents, Grams and Grampa, every summer, and winter holidays, too, until they died.”
This was my first Grace Greene book I’ve read. Her books caught my eye because I have vacationed in Emerald Isle many, many times. I was planning on reading Beach Rental but figured I would start with a short story to see if her writing sounded amateurish; I’m happy to say she is a quality writer! Although the book felt rushed (it was like 21 pages!) from start to finish, it did tell a nice story about love lost and the possibilities of love regained. I liked how it wasn’t mushy or over the top. I also liked some of the settings of Emerald Isle. Being such a short story, it definitely made me want to read Beach Rental all the more to see how a full length Grace Greene novel will be in terms of character development and setting.
I was eager to read one of Grace Greene's books because they were set in Emerald Isle and that's where I used to vacation when I was younger. The story brought back memories and reading it made me think I was in Emerald Isle, strolling on the beach with the characters. The story follows heartbroken bride Carrie who flees to the town after her wedding is called off. As she tries to unwind and get over her heartbreak, she meets her ex-fiance's friend Jay who followed her to Emerald Isle. Carrie must decide if she's ready to live again.
The premise of the story is good, but it was too short and there could 've been more detail added. For instance, there could've been more romantic interactions with Carrie and Jay. In the story it's explained the two had only met two times before the wedding, but it would've made more sense if the two were friends.
This short story was… a story. I enjoyed that it was another chance to visit Emerald Isle, and I enjoyed the glimpses of familiar characters and scenes from the first novel of the series. The story, on its own… it felt like the germ of a story. While it did resolve the main story, it felt like there was more story to be explored. I don't know yet whether this story is a teaser for the second novel in the series or whether it's just a standalone story, but I hope it's a teaser, because I want to know more about this woman and what happens to her next. But, without the greater context, this story was one that didn't move me as much as I'd hope.
A beautiful novella of finding love on Emerald Isle. I realized that this novella though it can be read alone, ties into the Emerald Isle, NC books and just adds a bit more magic to the entire collection of Grace Greene's books. A wonderful read!
This was a great short story! It really helps you look past the story to a great life lesson! Short can be good and this book is a prime example of this!!!
Short story about a fun away bride who escaped to a familiar place at the beach her grandparents once lived at. While there, she is met with her ex's best man. Angry at first, the ending becomes much more enjoyable. I always. Enjoy Grace Greene's stories.
This is a very short story that ties in to one scene in the Beach Rental book. The characters are not brought back up in any of the rest of the books in the series. FYI....I purchased this as a stand alone book, to discover later that it is included in the Beach Christmas novella.
I almost discarded this short story because it couldn't hold my interest. It became better right before the end. Actually I wouldn't recommend this story to anyone.
WYSIWYG. "Beach" is right there in the title. This is a beach read, where the primary focus is the vicissitudes of love gone wrong and the possibility that Mr. Right has come along. It does have a little depth to it, as much as can be encompassed in a 16-page short story.
