Sixteen-year-old Eliza has just been picked up by police, placed in the foster care system and deposited in Hope House, a group home for troubled teens. Her comrades are drug addicts, truants, and juvenile delinquents but blue-haired Rodney shows her that she isn't so different from the rest of the teens she lives with. When Rodney asks her to runaway with him, Eliza has to decide if she wants to take her life into her own hands or live in a system that's notorious for holding onto societal rejects like her forever.

The Runner is a true story about falling in love and learning to heal from a life of abuse and abandonment.

The Runner is a story about a foster teen who was dealt a rough hand in life and isn't sure how to connect with her peers when she's sent to live in a group home. While there, she learns how to heal from an abusive past and begins to fall for a runaway named Rodney.

This story is raw and true in ways most stories about teens with tough backgrounds aren't. I appreciate the author's candidness (it's based on her real life experiences) and it shines a light on what it's like to be a foster kid. It's also a heartbreaking story about finding love in the most hopeless places.
