Charlotte Grey had anticipated her Determining for years, the day when a computer program would read the microchip in her wrist and decide her future. But when the results point her toward the life she'd worked so hard to avoid, she becomes painfully aware of how flawed the system is. Before all her chances of happiness are ripped away, Charlotte seizes the opportunity to free herself. But her rebellion has dire consequences. In the midst of fighting for the life she believes will make her happy, she discovers that she's a hotter commodity than she ever could have imagined. With her abusive father, a sadistic suitor, and a political rebel after her, asserting her independence might have been the most dangerous thing she could have done.
Rebecca is the youngest of five children. The age gap between her and her older siblings provided many hours alone with only her imagination for company. She blames those hours spent creating dramatic sagas with her Barbies for her love of storytelling. After spending most of her life in Connecticut, she made the leap and moved to Nebraska where she now lives with three fish, one dog, and a ginger roommate. The Determining is her first novel.
Like the book hate cliff hangers especially if the next book isn't even out. Authors forget what it means to engage a book only to have no closure. What, they think we will wait a year after are interest is forgotten. I think it is a waste of time reading books with cliff hangers and no next book.
This is Rebecca Grous's debut novel and it's a winner. The story pulls the reader in with the ominous first chapter in which Charlotte Grey's life is laid out before her by her "Determining," a process in which an imbedded computer chip decides a person's education and career path. As Charlotte fights against the future the government chose for her, she uncovers a web of deceit beginning with her own father, the creator of the Determining's computer code.
As a reader new to the genre of New Adult fiction, I found this to be a wonderful introduction. The novel is filled with intrigue, suspense, and romance. The story ends on a cliffhanger and I'm looking forward to reading the next installment of "The Determining" series!
All of her life, Charlie has anticipated the Determining, the time when the chip in her arm would be read and reveal what her path in life would be. When she gets information she doesn't want to hear - that she will be following in her rich and abusive father's footsteps and be in line to take over his company - the last thing she wants to do with her life - Charlie is despondent. When she further learns that her parents are also pushing her into marriage with a man she loathes, Charlie takes matters into her own hands in an attempt to steer her life in a different direction.
Other than some minor editing mistakes, this was the beginning of a terrific series. I loved how well rounded all the characters were; this was a one-sit read! Highly recommended!
This book has less action than the other books like it but the action it did hold was possessing. The love story is prevalent and I'm anxious to see how that plays out in future books
Wow, I figured this would be like the Match series and it did have it's similarities but it was so much better than that. I can't wait for the next installment.
This book was so good, I devoured it in one sitting. The characters were easy to love/hate and relate to, everything was so descriptive! I cannot wait to find out what happens next!
