Knockout Love #2

Sucker Punched

Rate this book
From New York Times bestselling author Kelley R. Martin, comes a sexy new standalone in the Knockout Love series.

“Macy Dunham” is synonymous with “off-limits.” Not only is she practically a virgin, but she’s a walking, talking angel who’s way too good for a devil like me. She’s straight-up beautiful, and so far out of my league I want to cry. Did I mention she’s also the godmother to my future niece or nephew?

Now I have to play nice with “Aunt Macy” for the next 18 years. There’s just one tiny problem—the first night I met her, I played with her a little too nice.

Macy was only supposed to be a hook-up. I was supposed to show her a night she’d never forget—give her a little taste of what it’s like to be bad—and then send her on her way. She wasn’t supposed to stick around, and she damn sure wasn’t supposed to become my best friend.

Do you have any idea how hard it is to pretend like I don’t know how soft her skin feels, how good her lips taste, or how perfect it feels inside her? It’s torture. I’d give my left nut for another chance to sink inside Macy, but I can’t afford to mess this up and that’s exactly what would happen.

It’s too bad “Blake Whitmore” is synonymous with “screw-up.” Macy’s a sweet girl who deserves an epic love story. She deserves romance, and a knight in shining armor who slays dragons. I’m not the knight in this story.

I’m the fucking dragon.

Overall Opinion: This is definitely not one for my safety gals! I wanted something light and fluffy after some intense reads, but this had way more angst than I was expecting. The H messes up more than one time to the point that I never felt that he fully redeemed himself. I get that he was damaged, but it was too much for me. For those that require some good grovel, I think you might have some issues with this one. The big conflict happened around 85ish%. That wasn't nearly enough time to have the conflict, and then get the resolution needed for me to forgive the H. It felt rushed and way too easy of a resolution for me. It was a BIG conflict and something that I personally couldn't have gotten over as easily if I was in the h's shoes.

**I don't think that you need to read the first book to understand and follow along in this one, so it can be read as a standalone IMO**

Brief Summary of the Storyline: This is Macy and Blake's story. Macy's best friend, Savannah, and Blake's brother, Declan, are the mcs from the first book. They meet one night at a party through them. One thing led to another, and they have a hot romp in the bathroom. They soon find out that they are going to be godparents to Savannah and Declan's baby, so the idea of hooking up again is shot and they decide to become close friends instead. Macy runs into some bad luck, and they end up living together. After spending more and more time together they develop stronger feelings and fall in love. There is some hot sexy times, some big drama, and some sad moments...but they do get a HFN ending.

POV: This alternated between Macy and Blake's POV.

Overall Pace of Story: Good until the last 15ish%. It felt too rushed at that point, but otherwise I thought it flowed well and I never skimmed.

Instalove: No, but instantly connected (and major instalust).

H rating: 2.5 stars. Blake. He was pretty damaged guy. He held a lot of demons from his past, and he really struggled with his feelings. I never fully forgave him for the things he did to Macy.

h rating: 3 stars. Macy. I liked her awkwardness, but I really wanted for her to be stronger at times. I wouldn't say she crossed the line into being a doormat, but she was really close.

Sadness level: Low/moderate. I teared up a little bit, but I never needed any tissues.

Push/Pull: Yes

Heat level: Moderate. They have some hot tension, chemistry, and scenes. There are only a few scenes of the actual act, but the tension is pretty hot!

Descriptive sex: Yes

Safe sex: Yes and no.

OW/OM drama: Yes

Sex scene with OW or OM: Yes

Cheating: Yes, IMO

Separation: Yes

Possible Triggers: Yes

Closure: This had a cute jump ahead epilogue, but I still wanted more. I would call it a HFN ending, but some probably would call it a HEA .

How I got it: It was part of my kindle unlimited subscription.

Safety: This one is probably Not Safe for the safety gals.

I disliked Blake. He was with another woman more than once. I know they weren't in a relationship but come on. He actually set up a friend date with Macy. During the texting he mentally revealed liking her but he went upstairs to f--- Tori. He mentioned it would be Macy he would be thinking about. I guess if my husband cheats but visualizes me f---ing him it's ok. Idk. That turned me off then of course the Chloe thing didn't help. Does it count if you can't remember? Yeah it counts for the persons heart you just ripped out. Macy finally decides to move on. Gee how feelings develop once the girl decides to date. His dad dies and he's drunk. He begs Macy to be with him and not the other guy. She picks him and while she's breaking up with the other guy Blake feels rejected and gets drunk. Sure he said he didn't know she was his but I think what pisses me off is that he didn't even try to fight for her. He gets drunk and f---s Tori on the couch in the house he shares with Macy. I was so glad Macy let her anger out and I was glad she didn't roll over and forgive him. I'm sorry can only work so many times. I'm glad they got their HEA however I could not have taken him back. I would have been that woman that saw him with the other chick in my mind all the time. Couldn't let that go. Something else that bothered me was her not telling her mom about her dads affair. I think all women have the right to know if their man is cheating. People are like but they have a happy marriage and if she know it will ruin it. No they obviously don't have a great thing if he's screwing around. So here's her mom visiting dads office or calling it and unknowingly speaking to the woman f---ing her husband. Just No!!!

Every goddamn time I give into a NA book because of a pretty/sexy cover it bites me in the ass. This was bad in so many ways but before I get into it I'm gonna give fair warning to anyone reading further this may contain spoilers for some. I don't really consider all of them them as such but there's your warning.

I barely even know where to start with this book. I approach books with covers like this with healthy skepticism. 9.9/10 times if it is also a NA book I will skip it for my own good because it usually turns out like this where I hate myself for giving into a pretty cover. But this blurb gave me hope that it would be above the ridiculous NA unnecessary drama that permeates the subgenre. While it didn't have the traditional NA teen drama that made me feel like i was back in high school....it wasnt much better. The MCs have a semi drunken hookup and its enjoyable. He's interested in more sex she's interested in seeing where things go but because they end up godparents to the same unborn child they decide not to pursue anything on the off chance that both of the kids parent's die and they end up co-parenting. Already I find this so absurd but i thought i was gonna get a sweet story of guy who doesnt think he's worthy of h try to be friends and they end up in sweet sweet love. boy was i deluded! The MCs are so attracted to each other but refuse to act on it because theyre "just friends." Friends who cuddle and watch netflix and are jealous whenever someone looks at the other MC. THEYRE A FUCKING COUPLE THE ENTIRE FUCKING BOOK AND THEY'RE TOO MORONIC TO EVEN REALIZE IT. I mean my male friends will come to bat for me when someone puts their hands on me...but they aren't gonna be willing to go to jail for murder for it just saying. Anywho neither of them refuses to acknowledge what they're doing is totally dating which makes the whole book go sour. H is a fucking creep. He's a raging alcoholic who sneaks into the room she's living in at his place, masturbates on her bed, and steals her underwear out of her drawer. Sane Jessica would quit there but a)it was too late to start something else and b) i really kept hoping that this would get better...it didnt. He crosses every boundary she tries to set and she lets him...they bathe together for christ's sake. Just friends my ass. So creepy H stuff aside this could've worked except we have loads of OW/OM issues. h starts dating this other guy. Frankly this dude was the most likable character in the entire book. He's kind and patient and she responds by cheating on him with H. So now I'm super over h because I fucking hate a cheater more than anything but an abuser. But by then I might as well finish. Actually trying to do the right thing she goes to break up with OM and when H finds out she's with the dude he hangs up before giving her a chance to explain and proceeds to fuck another girl on the couch of the house the MCs are sharing. But he's so sorry...and he never would've done it if he thought he had a chance with her...blah blah blah. Dude spent the entire book whining about how he wasn't good enough for her and wondering how he'd fuck it up...but he never manned up and actually tried to be the dude she deserved until the next to last chapter and once he'd fucked it up it was too late to redeem himself to me as a reader. He kept going on and on about being the brother that always fucked up but never actually grew up (at 25) to fix his shit. He had some deep seated emotional issues to be sure but the H i want to read is not the frat bro who thinks being in love makes him "whipped" and cheats because the h is "too good for him" its the guy who worships the ground the h walks on, who owns his feelings for her-wears them like a badge of fucking honor, who would never do anything to hurt her because its like hurting himself. This was not that hero. For what little it was worth to me at that point the h does make him earn her back which is usually a point of issue in romances for me, but i already didn't respect her and disliked her at that point so I didn't really care much anymore. h had her issues too but they didn't really factor into the story so a lot of her backstory seemed unnecessary. The sex scenes were for the most part pretty hot and i give kudos to her always bringing up the issue of safe sex. The writing was solid and there were plenty of little moments that had me giggling which was why this got an extra star...but the romance of it all...well it was absent for me. The ending also had a fatal flaw to me. In the end he acknowledges that he has a drinking problem but only goes to AA to win her back. I know from education and exp that's not how it works. You have to get help for you you can't use someone or something else as a crutch or the second the crutch slips even the slightest you end up back in the hole.

Bottom line: Though this book had its moments overall I could've found better ways to spend my time. Addiction I can handle but cheating I cannot. The H was repulsive to me...he was often creepy and stalkerish. He said and did hurtful things to the h. For her part she wasn't much better. She strung a good guy along in an attempt to get over H and ended up cheating on the guy anyways. I guess these two deserve each other but that's not a romance in my book. Also don't let the blurb fool you this isn't a friends first romance they're dating the entire time they just refuse to admit it

4.5 Blake & Macy Stars

'He tastes like the perfect combination of bad decisions and a good time'

Whoa. There were parts of this book I did NOT see coming. I kind of got blindsided at one point....but more of that later.

I loved the first book, Down & Out , which was about Declan and Savannah. This book tells the story of Blake, Declan's brother, and Macy , Savannah's best friend. I don't think I anticipated enough just how different this book would be. It has a totally different vibe.

There was something rather adorable about Declan. Blake is not adorable. He is such a complex hero and for some readers he will be too much. If you have hard and fast rules about seeing the hero with other women then brace yourself. Is he a cheater? Hmmm... I'm going to risk incurring the wrath of others- but what the hell, it's just my own opinion & not everyone will agree & that's the beauty of us book junkies sharing our thoughts- I don't think it is cheating. Alcohol and miscommunication play a huge role. If I was Macy would I have given him a second chance? No. But Macy is a total sweetheart. She is strong but gentle and she loves this damaged, broken man with all her heart. I was glad she got angry with him. He has to go above & beyond to stand a chance of getting Macy back. Blake's behaviour is reprehensible but you have to understand why he does what he does. He is layered and complex. But there is something immensely likeable and charming about him. Even when I disliked his actions I still wanted him to redeem himself. I never felt like I couldn't get past what he did. His own shame and remorse is woven into the story and when you read it from his perspective it is so very sad.

There are many light hearted and laugh out loud moments in this book. There is chemistry between Blake and Macy that is off the charts. You want these two to work. She brings out the sweetness in him- it's buried just below the surface but it's most definitely there.

It's important to say they both are at fault for blurring the lines of their relationship. The fault does not all lie at Blake's feet.

Ultimately it's a love story that has angst, humour, heat and will pull your heartstrings. It will provoke all sorts of emotion and even if it takes you out of your comfort zone I would still recommend giving it a try.

Dual POV with HEA.

My musical muse for Blake & Macy is
1) Dancing On My Own -Callum Scott
2) No One Else Earth -Wynonna Judd
3) Don't Wanna Know- Maroon 5

Ok this will not be for everyone

This book had a lot of things in it that usually make a book off limits for me and honestly if there had been some reviews that clued me into that I wouldn't have read this. But that being said I'm glad I did. I have been in a real big book slump lately, going back and reading books I read before because I can't seem to get into any new ones. Well I didn't have that problem with this one. I've been up all night and just finished it, just in time to go to work.

So here's my take on it:

Macy and Blake hookup like a one night stand. Best sex of both their lives, but since they are now Godparents of Declan and Savannah's daughter they feel they need to stay just friends. Macy ends up needing a place to stay Blake offers his place, so she moves in. This whole time they are fighting their attraction for each other big time. But Macy knows Blake isn't willing to offer her more so she keeps turning him down when he wants to have sex. One night she turns him down he gets drunk and sleeps with a woman at their house. This hurts Macy of course but she realizes she has no reason to feel hurt and meets a man she starts dating. They date for a while and it's killing Blake to see her with someone else. Blakes dad dies, he is drunk when Macy finds him at home and he tells her. Then he tell her he wants her to pick him and not other guy, she does, they do it all night. Next day when he can't get her by text he calls and she is meeting guy she was dating for coffee, he hangs up goes to bar gets drunk and has sex with a girl on their couch she catches him. All hell breaks loose, she throws girl out by hair and proceeds to tell him she was not on date but telling guy she can't see him anymore. He looses it. Cops are called she leaves him. It takes awhile but he makes amends.

I like this book because it had me on a roller coaster of emotions. I felt Blake's feelings for Macy and when she caught him on couch with other woman I was sick to my stomach. Not just for Macy but for Blake cause I knew he loved her and his actions were going to tear him apart. Like I said I normally won't read a book with cheating or questionable cheating but this author made this work for me. It really hit me in the feels. Lol

Oh man, was this book a joke? I am mortified that I actually read the whole thing. I honestly liked it at the beginning and couldn't wait to go home to finish it. I feel so betrayed that the author did that to me. I mean I honestly looked past but it just absolutely ruined it for me when

I thought he was creepy and I was right

I wouldn't recommend this book if you hate having OW and cheating (it depends on how you see cheating)

I JUST WISH MACY HAD A BETTER GUY BECAUSE BLAKE IS DEFINITELY NOT A GOOD GUY!! Oh and he never even told her about his gambling problem he had??? I was not into this book. :(

Sooo...I'd been waiting and waiting for this bad boy to come out and it finally did!! *does a happy dance*

I'm not going to lie, bk1 was certainly, more engaging and over all better in every way, but don't let that count it's sequel out.

Sucker Punched certainly had its pros and cons. It was interesting, nicely written, but it did have a prickly male heroine that gave me a headache at times.

Still, I did manage to enjoy this novel though.

It would be fair to say that Macy is a 'nice' girl. She doesn't have a lot of experience with guys but she is not a virgin either. Her best friend Savannah takes her for a girls night out at a hot spot and this is where she meets Blake.

He is freaking gorgeous and like no other guy she has met before, he exudes sex - it's like pheromones are seeping out of his pores. He is the kind of guy you want to climb and hook your hammock to. He is way out of Macy's league but for some inexplicable reason, he is into her. So she lets him climb right in. She has never felt so sexy and wanton with a man before. She experiences the hottest night of her life.

This can never happen again however, once she realizes he is Savannah's boyfriends brother, he is a player and they will be co-god parenting a baby. This decision did not make sense to me, I could not understand the reasoning behind this but it is what it is.

Macy and Blake definitely have the hots for each other, the attraction is constantly there. He knows he is not good enough for her, okay he wants to fuck her but nothing more than that. She prefers to be in a relationship so fuck buddies ain't gonna work for her either. Therefore, friendship is the only option. This is how they end up being flat mates. You can see where this is going right?

These two pretty much behave like a couple in a loving relationship, minus the sex part. However, neither of them can see it, let alone admit it to themselves. The attraction is there, in spades. In fact, most days they are on the cusp of bonking like rabbits, it is a fine line they walk.

Blake could be the perfect guy for Macy but he has many issues he needs to sort out. The best thing they could do for each other is just walk away and not look back but the heart pull between them is too strong to do that. Can these two get their shite together before they cause each other irreparable hurt?

I've been waiting for Sucker Punched for what feels like a very long time. I fell in love with Kelley R. Martin's writing and characters in Down and Out, and I couldn't wait to read more of her work. Sucker Punched takes us back to the world of Down and Out. This time Declan's brother and Savannah's best friend get the chance to fall in love. Some of the story overlaps the same time period as the first book and, although Sucker Punched is a standalone novel, I would recommend reading Down and Out first for the back story.

Sucker Punched was an intense forbidden love story. Blake and Macy's relationship was just as complicated as Declan and Savannah's. It started out based on their intense sexual chemistry, but quickly became more than just sex. There was a deep emotional connection between them that I loved. They were constantly fighting their feelings for each other and trying to keep their desires hidden. There were so many obstacles for them to overcome in this story. The dual points of view made it easy to empathize with each of them -- even when it made me uncomfortable.

Normally, I try to post spoiler free reviews. I tried to keep this review as spoiler free as possible, but I do feel the need to warn sensitive readers of something. If you don't want to know, don't read the spoiler!!! *TRIGGER WARNING SPOILER**

Sucker Punched was a highly emotional read. Blake and Macy's road to happy-ever-after wasn't always fun, but their story fit them perfectly. I enjoyed getting to know them better and seeing their characters grow. I would recommend this book to readers who have loved the Knockout Love series from the beginning.

This book could’ve been so good, but unfortunately it wasn’t for me. From a certain point I skipped pages to see how it would end, therefore I can’t give this book a rating.

My main issue with this book is safety. For the safety gang: this book is far from safe. The H is with OW after sleeping with the h. I don’t like that, but when it happens three times he can never redeem himself for me as a (safety) reader. The h also gets herself a boyfriend, it’s all pretty new and they haven’t slept together. She cheats on him with the H. I don’t like cheaters and she cheated on her boyfriend before breaking up with him for the H. My issues don’t end with her, it continues with the H. I didn’t like him. Don’t expect a string of OW, there were (only) 2. One of them if like a fuck buddy and the other one he doesn’t know, not even her name. All of the times with OW he was already into the heroine.

The h is confronted with OW number two the morning after and is very hurt. The H has the decency to feel guilty and apologizes for his fuck up. The H and h are not together at that point, so technically he didn’t do anything wrong. But I don’t like my heroes having sex with OW when they are already into the h (even when he didn’t remember because he was that drunk). The nail on the coffin was the third time he was with OW. This was his fuck buddy and because of a misunderstanding he had sex with her on the same couch he had (unprotected) sex with the h just hours before. The h walks in on this scene and throws the OW out of the house and has to see his condom covered erection. When he learns that he jumped to conclusions before talking to her in person he starts to apologize again. But the number of times you can say “I’m sorry” are limited. I was happy to read that the h didn’t gave in to him. There is a separation of about two months and they do get their HEA. Personally I would never have taken him back, no matter how much he claimed to have changed.

Just hours before the third time he was with OW, he asked the h to pick him over her boyfriend. She answers that it has always been him (the H). Although there is a vague line whether they were an item or not, I count it as cheating. He didn’t and she felt that he cheated on her. One way or the other, when you have feelings for someone and you want to be in a relationship and asked that person to be together, you don’t have sex with someone else. Especially in a time frame of 24 hours. Misunderstanding or not, you don’t make such drastic decisions that can destroy the thing you might have going. That cannot be redeemed IMO.

My feelings were all over the place with this story. I liked it, then loved it, then hated it, then screamed "oh hell no", then felt indifferent...Sigh.

The whole premise of this story is basically "shit or get off the pot".

Boy wants girl. Girl wants boy.
Boy and girl agree to just be friends.
Girl and boy move in together.
Girl and boy pretend their attraction to each other is all shits and giggles.
Girl pretty much does what boy wants and decides to go find someone else to spend time with.
Boy wants girl now that she is not available all the time to spend time with him.
Boy jumps to conclusions and finds another girl to ruin whatever realization of feelings he had professed just the night before.
Girl sees this with her own eyes and blows her shit.
Boy begs girl to forgive him. Girl tells him to go fly a kite.
Boy finally admits to his problems. Boy and girl spend months apart.
Boy is rebirthed.
Girl gives in to her feelings.

And they lived happily ever after.

Then end.

Boy's brother and girl's best friend are a couple. Boy and girl meet at a club and have a one night stand. Then they find out that their mutual brother/friend wants them to be godparents to the child that is yet to be born so boy and girl think it is best to remain friends. But they still flirt each other, cross multiple physical boundaries, move in together, act like immature, hormone addled idiots, and keep circling back to 'let's stay friends'. I'm not sure what the road block to them being together was (because the god parent issue got shoved aside real quick), but the incessant drama felt entirely pointless.

The reader is told multiple times that girl is very shy and inexperienced though this is in direction contradiction to the girl's actions throughout the book. I also felt that the theme of alcoholism and addiction were used as mere props.

Ugh, God! this book was such a hard book to rate. I both Loved and Hated it. I loved how Blake and Macy were. They were so funny and cute. I just loved it.I loved how much Blake loved Macy. Now to the Hate. I hated what Blake did TWICE!!!. Also I think Macy should of been straight with him about her dating from the beginning.

So this book was hard for me to rate. Some of it was 5 stars and some was 3 stars (the other girls) So I'll go right in the middle.... 4 stars

No cliffhanger
Standalone though book 2 in the series
Told from both POVs
No major editing issues

I have waited for this book for a very long time so I was stoked to see it finally came out but I was not prepared for it. I don't know how one book can have you laughing so hard you and then break your heart. This author nailed this book. It made me run the gamut of emotions.

Macy is the sheltered rich girl. Blake is the notorious player who ruins anything he touches. Their paths should have never crossed but fate has a funny way of making things happen.

They get together at a party. Macy wants a walk on the wild side and Blake is just the guy to do it. What should have been a one night stand though turned into something more. Both wanted the other but due to knowing a real relationship would never work they decided to friend-zone each other. As in best friends/roommates zone. What could possibly go wrong??

I don't want to give too much away but when the move in together things go sideways. Blake's drinking gets out of control and just might cost him the best thing that has ever happened to him.

Will Blake be able to fix himself and the things that have torn them apart or will Macy finally believe him when he tells her he isn't a knight in shining armor... But I dragon who burns the things he loves the most?

This book was hands down one of my favorites or the year and way better than the first book in this series. It is a must read!!!

Sass Galore....slight spoilers ahead

This book made me laugh and smile so much. The banter between Macy and Blake was so enjoyable and well developed. I think it was interesting to throw them in as roommates buuut that didn't really feel new because that happened in Declan's story as well. It fit the story line but I would have liked to see something a little fresher. I think the worst part about this book was the ending. I was sad that everything happened at once and then they parted ways....but basically as soon as they saw each other again they were instantly back together. I don't think that was developed well or rang as authentic which was disappointing. Still a fun read!

Not my type of book when there’s cheating involved and more than once. H should just made up his mind to pursue h or just let her go instead of getting involved with OW and one of the scenario was caught by h. Though it’s not really considering cheating since they are not really together however H did said he want h so why would he find OW when he just assume h would back to Hayden is beyond me. Guess he’s really too broken to believe that he actually can HEA.

Poor Macy is the dorky girl covered in pimples in high school and that feeling has never really left her. When she goes to a party with her best friend Savanah she meets Blake, her best friend boyfriends brother and they have a quickie in the bathroom that they film. Macy has never done anything like that in her life but it really leaves her an impression and it also does to Blake. Because Declan, Blake's brother tells him to stay away from her and he knows he isn't good enough for her he tries but he just can't get her out of his head. Macy suddenly finds herself having to move back home with her parents and after an incident , Blake offers to let her move in with him as just friends. As much as they pretend they can't have a relationship they begin to build on but with that comes heartbreak and addiction that they both struggle with. This book is not a cliffhanger but I would love to see how Macy and Blake's relationship goes and also his brother Declan and Savannah.

3.5 stars. This books was alright; I liked it way better than the last book, but I think it’s because I fell in love with Blake. I hate how if they would have just talked to eachother everything would’ve been fine. I wished I saw them more as a couple throughout the book then roommates who sleep together.

Return of my spark!

A few years ago I lost my desire to read and have really a truggled picking up a book and finishing it. I can't thank the author enough for igniting that flame again. Kelley has a true gift for writing in such a way that makes me feel like like I'm a fly on a wall during that scene. I appreciate you and can't wait to read more of your awesome books.

I'm a sucker for love

I did a reread of Dec and Savannah just to be primed and ready for Blake and Macy. I loved the memories but this...This definitely made it worth it.

Sucker Punched is even better than I thought it would be. Blake 2.0 is hands down a keeper. Macy is all in even when it hurts.

Enjoy the pain, it makes it so much sweeter.

It was OK.
There could have been more grovelling at the end.
Well written, fairly descriptive and good smut!
Easy read, but the plot lacked a certain depth that did not suck me in like i want books to do.

Love.
Also I loved the author's note at the end because it really made me understand the perspective of the books and why their backgrounds are what they are.
