This book is for ages 15 and below. Extremely juvenile. It picked up a little at the 75% mark but not enough for it to be considered a good book. I just feel accomplished I finished it. Yay me.

3.5 Puzzle Piece Stars

Yep, sweet. This is a sweet book. Not too much steam. A touch of angst. And lots of sweet.

Madi is a college junior. She works hard at school and at work. She knows people. She can see what makes them tick. She may be a touch overboard on finding faults with people. Especially guys. Madi is really good at finding faults with guys.

People are like puzzles...Sometimes you find one that's really challenging and interesting so you keep working on it, knowing that if you give up, you'll never see it for what it's supposed to be.

Madi's best friend enters her in an on line contest to win a date with a rock star. And you guessed it....she wins. So Madi heads for California for her date with Jake Morgan.

Jake is a star. A workaholic rock star. He cares about his family and the few people he lets close. He is really a nice guy. He just happens to have a job that puts him in the limelight.

When Madi and Jake meet there are not explosions and clothes ripping off. They are both polite and sweet. Madi is happy to be experiencing something new and meeting people.

Madi and Jake take it slow and easy. Their relationship builds from being polite and blushing to flirting and wishing they were kissing. Jake has some demons he is battling. Can sweet Madi bring him out of his self-imposed love excile? Jake wants to protect her from himself. Jake doesn't think deserves love.

This is not my normal read. Usually I go for more steam. The writing was good. You connect to the characters and are rooting for them to just GO FOR IT already. This is Ms Chiletz first venture. I predict she will find some readers want romance, hearts, and flowers. Cause this one delivers all of those.

This is the kind of day dream we all want. Or least some people and it’s fun to haba “date” with a rock star why not. The chemistry was great and it started off really good guy then towards the end there seemed to be too much happening like let’s get it all ruched into the book and the girl annoyed the hell outta me at the end. Need to check book 2 cuz idk read it for yourself

The Contest (The Contest #1)
Waiting to Lose (The Contest #2) by Dawn L Chiletz
3.5 stars and 4 stars!!!

“She walked into his life in a contest and now he had to compete with his heart and his head to keep her away.”

So, I can now say I have read every single Dawn L Chiletz book, I started with The Fabulist, then read Confessions of a Carpool Captive and have worked backwards to this authors debut books, The Contest and its sequel, Waiting to Lose.

“You’re my steak, too.”

One thing that was abundantly clear while reading these two books is that Dawn L Chiletz’s writing has improved significantly in her later releases, but the trademark voice that I fell in love with though is ever present in this series. The Contest in particular actually screamed debut in so far as there was a lot of superfluous content and I felt that it could have been edited and trimmed a little further. But, I didn’t really care or mind because I had got so involved with this story and the characters that their day to day shenanigans became entertaining and enjoyable to read.

“With you, there are corners and edges that don’t seem to fit together. Your pieces are worn and twisted by time and hands that thought them to be damaged beyond repair. But I can see that’s not true. You just need the right hands and the right amount of patience to put the picture back in place. I’m not giving up. Solving your puzzle is the key to your heart. You should know that I plan on finding every piece until I put your broken heart back together.”

Madi is an A star student who works hard, studies harder and wants to succeed. Madi not only studies the human psyche she can read people too…like a book and this has led to many a potential relationship being over before it has even begun. Her opinion on the opposite sex isn’t fantastic but she is not closed off to the idea of romance either, she just hasn’t met anyone she has connected with or trusts. Madi though was adorable with a capital A, she is super cute, honest and has a fantastic sense of humour, her work ethic is fantastic and everyone loves her.

“With that he had given her his soul.”

Madi has a best friend called Kendra and Kendra spots a contest to spend the weekend with the one and only Jake Morgan. Jake Morgan is in a band that these two girls idolise and so Kendra enters her…and she wins.

“Jake has been amazing to me. He’s kind, thoughtful, compassionate, sincere, appreciative and humble. I’ve never met anyone like him and I’m sure I never will again.”

Jake Morgan was a sweet as Madi, he was adorable and this is why it was easy to become engrossed in their story. Jake is a workaholic though, he lives, eats and breathes music and has very little time for anything else, hence the no girlfriend…even if he does find one, they up and leave because no one wants to be second best. I loved the people that Jake surrounded himself with (bar one), this group of characters were a family united in their music not blood but the loyalty to each other was admirable and inspiring.

“I read somewhere that you shouldn’t be afraid to change because even though you may have lost something that was good, you may have gained something even better.”

So Madi meets Jake, Jake meets Madi and the rest is history, but boy does Dawn L Chiletz make you wait for the inevitable. The push and pull at times was as frustrating as hell, but totally understandable as these two navigate foreign waters to both of them. Madi is still in college, Jake is a successful rock star, one lives in Chicago, one in LA…it may as well have been the other side of the world. On paper, these two had nothing in common, total opposites, chalk and cheese and yet together…they just worked. Madi brought out the best in Jake and Jake gave Madi that confidence and belief that she was lacking.

“Doubt is like a disease. It creeps into your blood when you least expect it and feeds off the darkness inside you, causing you to bleed inwardly and crushing all reason.”

The path of true love never runs smooth especially when played out in the public eye and these two have a lot of hurdles to jump, speed bumps to navigate and curve balls to dodge. It seems love wants to test them and boy does it do just that.

“You have so much to give. I hope you find it someday. I love you, Jake, and I always will. You are free.”

While this read is sweet and swoony it was a little predictable, but the way the author delivered it made it just as entertaining. The connection that I had to the characters was on point and even I shed a few tears as these two find their feet. The banter and dialogue was fantastic and as ever Dawn L Chiletz’s ever present humour was never too far away. The relationship between Madi and Kendra was beautiful and their interactions brought me to tears of laughter many times. Friendships like these are to be treasured and Dawn L Chiletz certainly brought these characters to life.

“You mean his chopstick touched food that your chopstick touched? It’s liked you swapped spit. He might as well have kissed you.”

I adored this duet, inhaled it in one and a half days and couldn’t put it down. It totally threw off my reading schedule but was well worth the time spent. While it does have some great plot twists that certainly got my blood pumping in ire on the whole this was a cute romance and one that was a joy to read. Loved it.

One of my favorite rereads!

FIVE STARS
🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

No matter how many times I read The Contest by Dawn L Chiltez I feel like it's the first time.

The characters bonding, flirting, back and forth banter, heartbreak and happiness are so real they could have fallen in love right in front of me instead of in the pages of a book.

Ugh. It kind of started it out well for me, but then I found myself eye-rolling one too many times, and I just lost interest. Sorry.

Goodreads-we need the option to give half stars! I would give The Contest, which happens to be Dawn Chiletz's debut novel, 3.5 stars. I have read two other books by her before this one and absolutely loved them. I can honestly say that her writing improved greatly since writing her first book. Jake Morgan is a famous singer/songwriter that just so happens to be quite popular with the ladies. Madi is a college student who happens to win a contest to meet Jake. Madi is not the crazed fan like Jake expected and since she impressed him and his staff so much, he decides to hire her for the summer. The lines between professional and personal get blurred as they try to figure out what exactly they are to each other. I liked The Contest, but I would have preferred it if it was written from both Madi and Jake's point of views. While I liked Jake and Madi, I just couldn't connect to them all that well. With that said, I thought the story idea was really original and it definitely got better as it went on. So much that I am looking forward to the next book in the series and more from this author!

Great read!!!

This is my first read from Dawb L. Chiletz and i loves it... Jake and Mandi couldnt have been more perfect for each other!!! Jake is totally thay swoon worthy rock star with that sexy smirk that drives woman wild. Madi is your collage student that likes to keep everything simple and doesn't like change. But thanks to her best friend entering her in a Contest everything will change for her.

Holy Moly. Dawn Chiletz is a genius.

I freaking loved this book! The humor, the banter, the emotion. I loved how Madi never gave up on Jake. I love how this was a rockstar romance, but more of a 'wholesome' romance without all the drugs, alcohol, and sex. It was still raw and deep and has some difficult subjects, but the way her story developed was just amazing. Dawn's books are just perfection and she has quickly become a favorite of mine.

Debut story

I really enjoyed this debut novel by Dawn. Jake and Madi met totally by chance when Madi's friend entered her into a contest. They both feel an instant attraction but deny, deny, deny. So many of our previous relationships bleed over and poison our new relationships. It can sometimes take a major event to "wake up" and you can only hope that its not too late. I think you will enjoy this story as much has I have!

The sexual content was more than I wanted to read, so I skipped a few descriptive scenes.
For most of the book, both leading characters are made out to be angels, which became less interesting to read about as I kept reading. Then, when the flaws and conflict came out, I felt like they should have been a bigger part of the story, rather than coming in suddenly.

What a fabulous story. I found myself not wanting to put this book down. Dawn Chiletz is a wonderful story teller. I love the stories she tells. I was fortunate to get to meet her at an author signing and bought all of her books. This is the third book of hers that I have read and can't wait to start Waiting to Lose.

Madi wins a contest to meet her fav rock guy, Jake. They meet, but it's insta-like but not love. It's a slow burn romance here.

You can tell that this is the author's first book: character development is good, but not great; the slow burn thing is not well done. And the drama feels contrived, not real.

Other books by this author are much better!

I had been hoping this book would be about the couple's romance. Instead they danced around their feelings and then Madi started pushing for them to be a couple or get together or sleep together. I didn't find it believable. It's definitely meant to be a slow burn but they were mostly friendly with some flirting.

So funny

My Dad literally checked on me to see why I kept cackling when he thought I was napping. The banter between Madison and Jake is just so funny. There were some times I wanted to slap them both upside the head for getting in their own way. Just a good story.

The Contest is Dawn L. Chiletz's debut novel, and I have to say for a first time Indie publication, it was impressive!

I quickly was drawn to the personalities of the two characters, Madi and Kendra. Their strong friendship reels you in right away. I am always into a good storyline with friends who always have each others' backs. You have this in The Contest. Not just with Madi and Kendra, but you also find out later on that Jake has a few good people in his camp as well that are trustworthy and endearing as characters.

On top of that, you also have the quirky and unusual - sometimes awkward, but always interesting - chemistry between Madi and Jake. It was fun to read each of their points of view on how they were trying to figure each other out. You get hooked on their stubbornness and their playfulness, and then all you want to do is know more about Madi and Jake and how this blossoming story will end.

It is true that this is a story about an everyday girl and a famous musician. That's been done. A lot. BUT! This isn't a whirlwind story about lust at first sight, a love 'em and leave 'em cocky rock star or a girl who loses herself in a fairytale of being in the presence of music royalty. The Contest is the opposite of all of that. And that is what kept me reading.

The Contest really turns out to be a friendship to love story. I like that about this book because I think friendship is the basis to any good, strong love relationship, and that aspect gives this book an element of believability that gives me the warm and fuzzies. Another thing that I like is that Madi and Jake are both portrayed as two people who are just trying to live their lives the best way they know how. Madi is level headed, but a little insecure when tossed out of her element. She is very good, however, at masking that insecurity when it counts. She is a strong willed person with a lot of determination. Jake is trying daily to do what he loves best, his music, while staying out of the paparazzi spot light and keeping those close to him out of it as well. He has secrets about his past that keep him hesitant and guarded with relationships. But he is sweet, humble and generous, and is in desperate need of someone he can trust unconditionally, although he doesn't really know that until he gets a glimpse of what that can be like.

I think you'll find Madi and Jake, along with other characters like Kendra and Ang, to be very loveable. You'll believe they are real and you'll want to root for them all to have an HEA.
One final thing: the ending of this book had me in tears. That doesn't happen often. Dawn's writing is genuine and heartfelt. She knows how to make you feel the feels.

I highly recommend The Contest. I promise that by the end, you'll be ready to 1-click the sequel, Waiting to Lose!

Great job, Dawn! I can't wait to see what else you have in store for your readers.

A really good simple read. It had everything: nervousness, attitude, humor with lots of LOL moments, a little angst, confusion, simplicity, character development, dual POV, 1st person read along with a mix of third person and prob more.

I was searching for a "celebrity" read and came across this. It had pretty good reviews, the length in story was reasonable (i don't like reading anything under 200 kindle pages... ) and the synopsis seemed simple and interesting. Quickly downloaded.

My thoughts: The story itself was pretty relaxed and predictable. But what makes a simple, good read - a perfect read? Humor, LOL moments, Bantering.... WITHOUT going over the top. Madie, Kendra, Jake and the whole crew had you smiling.

Why not 5 stars? What I didn't like. Around the 55%-70%, the characters became somewhat dry and whiney. Their feelings of denial became repetitive (which is annoying to the reader.) I did kinda skim through a little of the third person talk during this time. "sorry".
I wish Ms. Dawn had taken a different approach at this. I like the push and pull attitude but when it becomes repetitive the reader will lose interest. I just wish Jake would get over his past history and move on... Easier said then Done.
With that said, I felt like this was a real life story. Not just another made up - wish it was my story. But a story you could see someone going through. So funny.

Here are some of my LOL moments. You won't get them but you will when you read.

* Are you kidding me? He's really here? Steve!!! Wake up!... How long until you are here? I need to straighten up.. STEVE!!! (I love how the mom is flustered and trying to wake her husband up.. That is exactly what how any mom would be)

* Jake states, Hello Mr. Ryan, I hope I didn't take you from a good dream." Her dad states "All I was dreaming was that Emily, mom, was screaming my name repeatedly." (I love his dry sense of humor.)

* One time it was the bird poop on her windshield titled "Oh SH*t".

Everyone had their own sense of humor.

I do recommend. Get ready to chuckle from the start but also be prepared for some repetitveness. Really good though.

Glad to see the story to continue.

I give this book 4.5 Stars. This book was so amazing. I enjoyed the writing, loved the comical banter, loved Jake and Madi undeniable chemistry. You could feel the electricity the minute these two were in each other's company. This book was an up and down ride of emotions with these two and I loved every minute of it.

Madi, who can not like Madi she is friendly, smart, sweet, successful and funny. She was probably my favorite part of the book. Her and Kendra were a riot, they had my LOL. It was really funny how most of this I was saying "Go for it."...you will understand when you read it. I loved watching her work through these feelings she had for Jake, I loved watching her experience things for the first time, and I love watching her overall goodness come into play on this book. Seriously the part with the red lingerie and the box of condoms...I may have been my favorite LOL part of any book.

So Jake he was a mixed bag of ups and downs for me. He was so nice, sweet and sexy. His bonus was that he was a successful rock star. I loved how he looked at Madi, I loved how he cared about her, I loved how he just wanted to be with her. But his downfall was his constant need to push her away....and that really just frustrated the hell out of me, I mean just when I thought okay now it will happen...it didn't. But don't give up on Jake, he will surely make you swoon and your heart melt because he is just that amazing of guy..jerk and all..lol

I quite enjoyed watching these two circle around each other, it was quite entertaining :)

This book was really, really good. I devoured it so quickly. It had an amazing ending. I can not wait to dive into book 2.
