The Cursed Coffee Beans

Rate this book
Murder, magic, and muffins—bless your heart if you think this week’s gonna be normal.

Small towns have secrets. Mine brews them fresh daily. Welcome to Mockingbird Springs, home of my quirky little coffee shop, Magickal Beans. Running a small business was supposed to be a peaceful gig—serve lattes, sell baked goods, and avoid accidentally poisoning anyone. Simple enough.

Then a local land developer drops dead, and since he had his eye on my property, the blame lands squarely on me. Now I've drawn the attention of a detective who’s all side-eye and sharp cheekbones.

Oh, and let’s not forget my two chatty pets who think they’re helping solve a murder and my ex, who’s suddenly keen on rebuilding our friendship in hopes of a do-over. Because of course he is.

If I don’t clear my name, I could lose everything—my café, my reputation, and what’s left of my social life. Good thing I’ve got strong coffee, a stronger support system, and just enough weirdness to survive the most chaotic week of my life.

The Cursed Coffee Beans is a laugh-out-loud cozy mystery filled with magical mishaps, adorable animals, and enough caffeine to keep a small Southern town buzzed for days.

The Cursed Coffee Beans is such a cute cozy. My introduction to cozies is fairly recent, but this one stands out from what I've read. The romance is a slow burn, which is suitable for the story...and the characters. I like the idea of a slow second chance romance. The unraveling of the mystery is well done. I often forgot I was trying to figure it out and just enjoyed the story. I love the talking dog and cat. Snark, anyone? It's a magical story, literally. I really enjoyed the elements of magic that holds it all together. Can't wait to read Muth's next book!

Welcome to Mockingbird Springs, South Carolina. Zip grew up here and has opened a coffee shop called Magickal Beans and is hoping for things to go smoothly. But she soon finds herself in the hot seat when the land developer who was trying to take her property is killed. To prove her innocence, Zip decides to investigate. She has help from her Aunt Corliss and her high school sweetheart, jones, as well as her two talkative pets. Can they find the real killer before Zip loses everything?

This is the first full length book in a new series, and it was an amazingly fun read. The book's well-written with characters who are well-developed and a fast-paced plot. I was immediately drawn into this captivating and magical tale and kept hooked from start to finish. I enjoyed the intriguing mystery which was fun to solve. This was a fascinating read full of humor, magic, and romance. I really loved this book which I simply didn't want to put down and I am genuinely looking forward to the next book. RA Muth is a fantastic author and storyteller who has become one of my favorites and whose books are a can't-miss. I highly recommend this book.

If you want a preview of Zip and Mockingbird Springs, you can read "The Magical Mocha Latte" which is a quick, fun read and will introduce you to the main characters.

3.5⭐️ this was short n sweet. Kitchen witchery and green witchery make a cozy coffee shop setting even cozier. I really liked the protagonist, and I loved Aunt Corliss and Jones. And the cat, Basil.

Around the 1/4 mark in the story, when they’re at the funeral, for me it started to drag a bit. Could have just been the mood I was in tbh. But I felt like there wasn’t enough about the magic? It was just a lot about the town and the coffee shop.

But then at the halfway mark it picked up again, and there was plenty of discussion of magical things and we focused back on the main characters.

The mystery itself was pretty simple, this is definitely a book you read to relax and feel cozy - as opposed to a gripping thriller. This book made me feel very cozy and I had a good time. I’ll be reading the next one!☕️

Your frontmatter shows an editor and proofreader

I don’t understand how so many comma splices and front-loading dialog tags were overlooked when the book was edited and proofed. We’re these professionals or friends and relatives?

A comma splice is a grammatical error that occurs when two independent clauses are joined with only a comma. To fix a comma splice, you can separate the clauses with a period, use a comma with a coordinating conjunction, or replace the comma with a semicolon.

Front-loading dialogue tags is something most authors tend to avoid.
Front-loaded tags come before the dialogue. This position is the one least used in most commercial fiction, and there’s a good reason for that: reader focus.

It was hard to focus on the story with these problems.

I loved the prequel to this series which was why I started reading this one. I really enjoyed getting into another mystery with Zip, Jones and Aunt Corliss…and of course snarky Basil and sweet Loki pup. Tons of secrets and underhandedness were going on with the guy who was killed, but Zip had a vested interest in solving the case, to clear her own name. And faithful Jones was by her side along with Aunt Corliss and a new character, a detective who was also part an agency Corliss was in. Laughs and mystery, what a winning combo!

Oh, Zip. The trouble you can accidentally get yourself into. I loved every minute of this cozy magical mystery with a little bit of love thrown in. That's how a second chance romance should happen and the only one I've read that I've really loved. I can't wait to read more of Zip's story. The sassy and feisty four-legged (or three) companions are wonderfully written as well!

Sweet southern charm

Tbis was sweet. Heavy on the Southern witch themes. If you like cages and cozies try it. Mystery was not bad. Recipes included.
