“I am Olivia Corey, the eternal actress. I’ve lived my whole life in two dimensions. Perhaps I prefer it that way.”
Olivia Corey has been offered the role of her life.
They’re making a movie called The Curse of Collinwood by Mr D Curtis. Apparently it’s based on a true story about an old house in Maine where all manner of terrible things happen.
Olivia is offered the role of ‘Amanda Harris’, a woman created from a painting, destined to fall in love with a cursed man, destined to roam the Earth to find him again.

I must confess that I picked this up solely for the appearance of Alexander Vlahos as Dorian Gray, but that turned out to be little more than a cameo guest appearance. Disappointing? Perhaps. I don’t have a huge impression of the series upon which this is based. I’ve seen many episodes of Dark Shadows as a kid, but to be honest I remembered very little of it, just that it was like a soap opera with gothic and supernatural elements. But I have to admit, this audio presentation, was spectacularly brilliant. It really has a lot in common with the classic The Yellow Wall-Paper, and also a twisted mashup with The Picture of Dorian Gray, but it so much more. Excellent performances and an enormously inventive story of a surreal reality that is both gothic, humorous and oh so very, very dark.
Olivia Corey or rather her real name Amanda Harris is cast in a horror film, a horror film based on the fears and love of her past at Collinwood. But something strange is going on, why do all the actors look so similar to their counterparts? Who is D Curtis and why hasn't anyone ever seen him and what darkness lurks in the film itself? Not everything seems to be normal and soon some are going to pay for it.
This was an incredibly inventive story with lots of humour, a thrilling mystery and some really dark moments. The actors really did a great job on this audio, the characters were very interesting and I liked the jokes about them being two-dimensional (Which you'll find out why). Nev Fountain has truly written a unique story for Dark Shadows. A story so unique it's fascinating and is filled with twist after twist. I also liked how this linked into another audio. But you'll have to listen to the ending to find out. ;) 10/10
I thought this was an interesting story. It involves Charles Delaware Tate's sketches and a revenge plot against Quentin, as well as furthering the love story between Quentin and Amanda Harris.
As with quite a few other people, I bought this release because Alexander Vlahos has a cameo as Dorian Gray in it. Sadly it’s only a brief scene but still it’s nice to know that he exists in the continuity of many other things. As someone who has never seen Dark Shadows and knows sod all about it, I was naturally not as invested in it as a fan of the show may be. I did really enjoy the story though, I grew to like the characters a lot; which really did disappoint me when one of the main characters was discarded so easily at the end for no reason. I mean I wasn’t invested in Olivia Corey’s life as I assume I should’ve been so I just found myself coasting through the story without any strong emotional attachment to anything.
I did love the narrative and the French actress whose name I cannot remember was such a brilliant antagonist. I found myself really detesting her and that was simply down to how well she was written and performed. The other antagonists didn’t really do much, some there just for comedic relief and others as canon fodder to be dispensed with at any point. The story was split into two parts and I’d have to say that the second part far exceeded the first. Sure the set up was nice but it was the melodrama and character drama in the second half that I really enjoyed. I must admit I found the ending a bit weird, with no real reason for it being like it was; I just sort of mentally checked out and didn’t find myself curious at all about the weird cliffhanger.
In summary, a great story that I highly recommend. It’s fun, a bit spooky in places and definitely has some unique ideas which really get you invested in the story even if you’ve never heard of Dark Shadows before. There are some slight weaknesses to the writing such as slapdash characterisation of the villains, and the acting could be a bit flat in the first half, but it’s easy to overlook that and still enjoy the story.
