Amelia is exploring the huge, old house where her family are spending Christmas when she finds a diary hidden in the attic. It was written by a boy struggling to look after an abandoned wolf pup. Before she knows it, Amelia is transported into the wintry world of the diary.
Holly Webb is one of Britain's best-loved children's writers. She has written over a hundred books for children, and her work has been translated into over thirty languages. Holly lives in Tilehurst, just outside of Reading, Berkshire, with her husband, three children and several cats.
It was nice to discover time travel element in it. I did not expect that. The story was lovely. I think that author has a lot of love towards animals which probably has helped her to write those books.
Amelia's mother and aunt have inherited Allan House in Scotland from their distant aunt. Amelia hasn't seen this other part of her family for 7 years! Tom is her age but he has a large dog called Freddie, and Amelia is very scared of it. She was knocked down and barked at by a large dog in the park so is now scared. And now she has to spend Christmas with them.
One day when exploring she sees a painting by the artist, and distant relative, who used to live there, Noah Allan. But then hearing Tom and Freddie, she finds a door to the attic rooms. Here she finds old trunks, as she explores their contents she finds an old tweed coat - putting it on and her hands into teh pockets she finds a diary. As a diary writer herself, she is fascinated. It is dated 1873, and belongs to the child Noah Allan!
On reading Amelia finds that Noah has found a wolf cub, who he is trying to keep fed, while completing his chores at home. Amelia wants to help but how could she....Until she wakes in the barn of Noah's home! Can she overcome her fears to help Noah and the Wolf find his his mother - who they think has been wounded.
When Amelia returns home, she is presented with a copy of a painting that is hung in a gallery in London, a painting of a Girl and a Wolf.... She enjoys Christmas so much more than she expected too.
My daughter (age 7) and I read this together as a bedtime read. It’s good solid story and is just the kind of thing my daughter likes - cute canines! It kept my interest well too which is not often the case with these series books! A good dependable readz
I ten element realizmu magicznego – mistrzostwo!
This one is 2.5 for me. Sometimes the transition from present day to past is a bit jarring, and having a diary entry before the story starts as well as not including important parts of the diary left me a little disconcerted. Amelia is short for age and nervous around dogs or strangers, and even though her family is staying with relatives for Christmas, she doesn't feel comfortable. Her cousin Tom seems intent on teasing and judging her, and his big dog, Freddie, scares her with his size and relentless friendliness. Seeking a safe place where she can just be alone, Amelia stumbles on a small room where she finds a boy's clothing and a journal written in the wintery month of October in 1873. As she reads the entries, she falls asleep and awakens to find herself in the barn of Noah, a budding artist who sketches scenes of nature and is hiding a wolf pup from his father and neighbors. Amelia becomes just as concerned about the baby as Noah and overcomes her fear about dogs in order to keep it safe until they can reunite it with its mother. At one point, she and Frost, the wolf, are stranded by a blizzard and seek refuge in a hollow tree. When Amelia returns from the trip to the past, she has a very different attitude toward Freddie and toward life. Plus, there's quite a surprise waiting for her. Youngsters will be drawn in by the edge-of-your-seats tension present in this story since it's not clear that Frost or his mother will survive, and while some of the human and wolf behavior seems rather unlikely, they'll probably still be drawn in by the events in the story. From my own experience, winter blizzards don't usually arrive with consistency until later in the year, but there are always exceptions to the rule. The black-and-white sketches are a helpful addition to the story.
