Chrissy Peebles, a practicing nurse, has always loved reading and writing fantasy from the earliest age she can remember. She plotted every single twist she could think of during bedtime stories for her children. When her little ones begged for more adventures, she felt confident enough to let her overeager imagination and sense of humor spill out into her first novel. She lives in Ohio with her husband, two young kids, one hamster, three dwarf hamsters and cat. When she's not taking the kids to Little League soccer, basketball, or baseball, she loves to snap photos as her favorite hobby.
I can't do this to myself. I read Ignite and it was a total cheesefest. It had every cliché you could think of and I really really hate a picture perfect princess MC who is so completely amazing and perfect. I cant even remember how old she was but, her behaviour was completely unrealistic and since when do parents let their kids come and go as they please. I'm sorry but if my kids think they are going to stay out all night and not let me know where they are, they wouldn't just be getting a talking to. it would be my foot firmly up their arse and grounded. "She hurried to do the same, and sat quickly in the first seat she could find. The math was easier than she was used to, as was chemistry, biology and Spanish." Really, well isn't she a bloody genius. Nope just smarter than those around her. "Luke took a strand of her hair and wrapped the natural curl around his pointed finger. He stared at it intently, alost as if he were in a trance, and Kira stared at him, stuck." Well that's just weird and gross and there is no way 99% of people would be ok with a stranger playing with our hair. EW. Awesome way to set up the love triangle for the future. I marked of so many passages that irritated the shit out of me, but ive already given this enough time. I'm just not the target audience for these I think.
The second I attempted to read was Crush, by Chrissy Peebles and a chapter was more than enough to know its not for me. There was a perfect MC who had parents that seemed more like friends. She met a dream guy who was perfect with his piercing eyes and god like looks. The description went on for over a page, she was instantly in lust and felt the need to tell a girl she had just met all about him like they had been friends for years. It felt like I was reading about a 12 year old girl, right down to the ridiculous girly giggling.
I like YA fantasy because it is mostly cleaner, but this genre is also prone to cliches a lot. So I could not even go through every book. Ignite was well written, but seemed to me a mix of every paranormal popular YA romance of the decade. Stake you was really good- scary, a good strong heroine and quite complicated romance story. Also shows how Twilight helps the baddies! Holly Hook's book was also well written, and the idea quite original, though her own specialization in writing stories that get increasingly more desperate until the very end somehow weakened the book, especially near to the ending - it was somehow anticlimatic. The others I have tried to finish but couldn't
So most of this is ya style. so most of this stories go like this -girl moves to new town -goes to new school where suddenly she finds friends -meets hot guy who is usually dark and depressed, usually with a stalker personality -discovers she has unusual powers
this is a collection of all badly written stories that go on the same track again, and again and again for 8 times. The only decent one is Stake you, by Claire Farrel, which is the only one that goes a little bit away from that line.
Darlings of Urban Fantasy is an anthology of multiple stories some I personally felt shouldn't have been marked as Youth since some of it had more adult mentality to it but hey what youth book isn't over sexualized these days? That being said several of the stories were great while others were lacking. Its a typical mix of stories written by different authors of different talent. I felt that its still worth the read.
2.5 stars For the most part these stories are juvenile and cliché. This is what I'm talking about when I say YA is giving me hives. This is a box set (free thank goodness) that contains novels that are all the beginning of a series. Essentially, the aim is to get you to buy the rest. Won't be happening here. Keep your vomit in my mouth worthy icky tales!
An great collection of UF/Paranormal authors. it's a great way to be introduced to writers I may have otherwise skipped over. Now I have an even longer list of authors and books to read. ;-)
Bait (An Order of the Spirit Realm Novel) by K.C. Blake
Ignite (Midnight Fire Series Book One) By Kaitlyn Davis
Element, Part 1 (The Natalie Vega Saga) by CM Doporto
Stake You by Claire Farrell
Tempest by Holly Hook
Seventh Mark (Hidden Secrets Saga) by W.J. May
Dangerous Designs (Book #1 of the Design Series) by Dale Mayer
Crush (The Crush Saga, #1) - 2 stars When Taylor sparks moves with her family to California her meeting with the locals doesn't go as expected. Her new crush Jesse is hiding something from her.
Really? One stupid mistake after another for the characters. tThe characters don't have much of an attention span, they jump from one thing to another. Taylor just acts dumb and has no common sense whatsoever. The characters were flat, there was no substance to them at all. I thought the writing was sloppy and the story did not have as much action as I thought it would.
The Ghost of Josiah Grimshaw (The Morgan Sisters) by Suzy Turner
