I’m obsessed with the prettiest, smartest guy on campus—and he’s never even looked my way.

Killian
It’s my last season playing college hockey, and I’m determined to help get the team all the way to championships this year. Unfortunately, whether I actually get to be on the ice depends on how well I do in statistics. I need a tutor, and the one person my professor swears can help me refuses to even give me the time of day.
I’ve been into Maddox since the first time I saw him, but he’s not into jocks—and he doesn’t even acknowledge my existence. When I finally ask if he’ll tutor me, he shuts me down immediately.
But I’m not one to give up. This might be my last chance to get close to him, and I can’t let that slip away.

Maddox
I don’t do jocks. I don’t befriend them, date them, or tutor them. Not after… everything.
But when Killian, one of the Camrose Rams’ star players, barges into my life, avoiding him becomes impossible. He’s loud, charming, and way too persistent—and he looks at me as if I hung the moon. Somehow, I end up getting roped into tutoring him. And letting him into parts of my life I’ve kept off-limits.
As much as I try to keep my distance, it’s impossible. He’s everything I swore to stay away from, and exactly what I can’t seem to resist.

Off the Boards is an M/M nerd/jock romance, perfect for readers who like study sessions brimming with tension, flirty and overprotective hockey players, and a tutor who’s very close to breaking his no-jocks rule.

This. Was. ADORABLE!

We have quite a generic formula here with the classic and dependable jock (Killian) x nerd/tutor (Maddox) pairing, but make the jock the most precious golden retriever ever and the nerd a prickly closed of black cat. 🐶🐈‍⬛

Killian carried this book for me, hands down: he was so adorable that I got major cute aggressions every scene he was in 😩 His months-long crush was everything. He’s so SMITTEN - basically wagging his tail whenever Maddox walks into a room - and the way he lights up like the freaking sun when he realises Maddox actually knows who he is? CUUUTE 😭😭

I also related hard to Killian’s struggles with statistics (flashbacks to my own uni days; babe, I feel you). And while it hurt to see him think of himself as “not the sharpest tool in the shed,” it was so heart-warming that Maddox never let him lean into that narrative.

These two together were just the cutest. I was giggling and kicking my feet during so many scenes - like when they’re lying in bed cuddling, and Killian casually confesses he remembers every important Maddox-date. Maddox’s reaction (basically exploding with cute aggression) was so relatable and just… AAAH, my heart.

Now, as adorable as the first half of this book is though, there were still a few things that didn’t work for me. The one-sided flirting at the start felt a bit much, and I cannot with the nickname Kill for Killian. Also, Maddox’s initial reasons for not starting anything just… vanish. We time-jump and suddenly they’re boyfriends lol

Also: Around the 70% mark it fizzled out for me a bit, and the ensuing decisions and drama felt too unrealistic and ott.

Still, despite this being a bit generic and predictable, I had a really good time reading this and I’m preeetty sure next book is gonna be Isaac and Rhys’ story and I’m very much looking forward to that 😍

3,5⭐️

“Fine,” I say. “If you win, I’ll tutor you once. If I win, you stop staring at me in class.”
His jaw drops. “You actually recognize me?”
I give him a puzzled look. “Clearly. Your staring’s distracting, and I’d like you to stop.”
If I thought that would embarrass him, I’m sorely mistaken—because Killian puts on the dopiest smile I’ve seen on him yet and spins to his friends. “He recognizes me!”
Rhys frowns. “You… you heard everything else he said, right?”
GAAH 🫠🫠

OH MY GOD!!!!!!!!

an entire book about the sweetest, most swoon worthy relationship between characters

this made me feel sooo happy. The characters, the plot line, the friend groups, the over protectiveness✨✨

“Maddox Roussel, you like me. You like like me. And you’re not afraid to show it.”

Killian’s been obsessively crushing on Maddox for years so when he’s failing in maths and needs a tutor he finally gets the courage to ask Maddox to be his.

“Killian,” I hiss, even if being carried like this may be something I’ve been fantasizing about since I first saw him. “Put me down.”
“Nah,” he says. Thank god.

Despite Maddox’s “no jocks rule” , it was soooo sweet watching him slowly fall for Killian and finally realise he deserves everything that killian does for him. And their relationship was SLOW. I LOVED IT. IT WAS PERFECT. The awkward but smooth flirting, the blue flowers (Maddox’s favorite color), the CONSTANT BACK RUBS. URGH 🤌🤌🤌🤌

They were both gone for each other and it was a pleasure to read and witness it. All the moments with the friends too were too good to be true. I was smiling way too hard 😭

And with that realization, I don’t want the night to end.
“Hey,” I breathe. “Can you stay longer, please?”
“Why?”
“Because you quiet down my thoughts.”
Maddox scoffs, though he’s smiling. “What, you want me to cuddle you to sleep or something?”
“Actually, yeah, I’d love that.”
He stills, his eyes widening. “Do you just say anything that’s on your mind?”
“Yeah.” I grin. “What’s the point of beating around the bush?”

this was so fucking cute!!! i was grinning throughout most of this book and Killian and Maddox just had me giddy and laughing with their banters. the way Killian was so down bad for Maddox >>> 😩 the things they did for each other!! they were a lil too cheesy at times but it worked bc it’s them and maybe my last few reads disappointing me just had me in the right mood for a cute and sweet story like this with barely any angst (even though angst is usually up more my alley🤣), but still. i had such a fun time anyways! i’m guessing

Aww... I really love this story so much. The push and pull between Maddox and Killian really amplified the elements of this story significantly. Maddox's initial resistance to Killian's efforts made for a fun cat-and-mouse game where he was stubborn in his refusal and Killian was adamant in his pursuit, making it very entertaining as these two tried to deny their obvious attraction and connection.

These two just connected on so many levels. They are both very intuitive and clearly care about their loved ones. Even though they are opposites in almost every single way, they are perfect for one another. They bring out the best in each other while pushing one another to improve, pursue their goals, and remain as true to themselves as possible.

Overall, I could not get enough of these two. Killian has the biggest heart, and watching him swoon over grumpy Maddox was so endearingly sweet. He definitely wears his heart on his sleeve, and Maddox is only human and could only deny adorable Killian for so long.

This book was so good!!
It's not a surprise how much I love gay hockey player romances, it's pretty much an obsession at this point. A big reason for that it's that they are all kinda similar, so I know I'll like it and I starter Off the Boards with this mindset, and I was very pleasantly surprised. It is a good hockey romance, but it is a lot more than that. These characters won my heart pretty much immediately, and I'm already thinking of reading the book that comes before this one because I know I'll miss these idiots. Give me a found family of hockey players and I'll be happy, but give me a sprinkle of angst to go with it and you have my ears.
Off the Boards is about a hockey player who's undecided if he wants to go pro and a nerdy TA that is (against his better judgement) helping him get his grades up so he can continue to play. Both of them have their challenges but they help each other get there and it was such a feel good book! I highly recommend it.

Thank you to the author for the ARC!

Arc Review: Off the Boards (Camrose U #2) by Maia Kinley
4⭐⭐⭐⭐

This has the kind of vibe where you think, oh, I’ve read this book a few times before — and maybe that’s exactly why it works so well. Familiar, comforting, and endlessly entertaining, it’s the kind of romance that doesn’t demand much of you, so you can just sink in and have fun. And fun is exactly what I had with these two ridiculous, fluffy babies.

Killian is in his final season of college hockey and desperate to boost his stats so he can keep his career dreams alive. Maddox is brilliant, bookish, and firmly committed to his “no jocks” rule. Their worlds collide when Killian needs tutoring, and Maddox ends up being the one person Killian can’t seem to stay away from.

At first, Killian’s flirting was a bit too much — he came on pushy — but on the other hand, Maddox was teasing him right back, so they ended up feeling like a well-oiled machine. I also loved the effort Maddox put into helping Killian with his learning skills and even encouraging him to stand up to his pushover father. There’s also a subplot about a past bully that was handled really well, and it sheds light on why Maddox holds so firmly to his no-jocks rule.

The setup is classic — jock meets nerd, tutoring sessions that turn into something more, a slow build toward breaking down those carefully guarded walls. It’s predictable in the best way, with enough spark, banter, and sweet moments to keep the pages turning. The chemistry feels effortless, and I couldn’t help rooting for them both to get out of their own way and fall already.

I haven’t read the previous book in the series, but it didn’t hurt my enjoyment at all — this worked perfectly as a standalone, but I think I now need to read Caleb and Nick’s story. And can we take a moment for that cover? It’s delicious and totally them.

Overall, this was just a delight — lighthearted, funny, romantic, and exactly what I wanted it to be. A solid 4 stars for a romance that leaves you smiling and a little bit gooey inside.

“God, Maddox,” he whines, falling on top of me. He keeps himself from crushing me by holding himself up with his elbows on either side of my head, and I tip my chin up to meet his mouth with mine.
I kiss him slowly as he slips himself out of me. Normally, I hate this part. I hate how empty it makes me feel afterwards. But… as he pulls out completely, his cum leaks out of me and down my crease. I grit my teeth. It’s the hottest thing I’ve ever experienced.
“Love you, babe,” he says, kissing me on the nose, and my heart does a funny jump again. I wonder when it’ll stop doing that. Because now that Killian has said it, it looks as if he’s never going to stop. Not that I can complain.
“Love you,” I murmur, almost too soft to be heard, but I know he catches it. The way a smile spreads across his face makes it obvious he did.”

Adored how the jock is the one panting like a dog on heat for the nerd.

But even then—“I bet you I’m going to have you by the end of this semester, pretty boy, and you’re going to be the one to ask for it.”

Yes, Killian! Talk your shit.

How he's both able to be adorably down bad for Maddox and also a cocky shit about it TO Maddox will never not make me smile.

Guy is so far gone that as soon as Maddox shows up anywhere he immediately starts glitching😂

Love to see it.

Bonus points for both of them being too chicken to stand up for themselves but when it's about the other? They're willing to take it to the mat.

My favorite part? How consistently SURE one of them is about things.

One of them saying 'I wanted to ask you about this thing but we should maybe take it slow and not rush into it?'

And the other basically going, 'Naaaah we're not rushing into it, we're going to get married and have kids someday and dogs or cats so really this is just small potatoes'

—about something that objectively, they're absolutely rushing into😂

But it's very cute, so who cares?

I'm really glad in the acknowledgments the author says "I swear these two have their own plans for the story I think this manuscript went through a dozen different iterations."
This is exactly how it felt to me while reading the book. I'd call it messy, but it isn't really that, I think it was more undecided especially the character development, especially Killian, at first he came off a little too cocky, over the top and almost clueless as opposed to Maddox's more grumpy stern character. Fortunately by the middle of the book character-wise they had settled and the story evolved in a way that was both interesting and page turning. As a couple they evolved slowly, this was a slow burn. So much so, that at times the connection didn't even feel real. Happily, by the end their fit was perfect. Lessons were learned life decisions made and all in all a great story.
*Lovely, adorable cover art✨🌈

Awh these two gave me all the warm fuzzies!!

Sunshine Jock x Grumpy Nerd will always be one of my favorites.

Killian is our golden retriever hockey player and he’s Josh the sweetest thing. I honestly give Maddox props for resisting him as long as he did 😂 not only was Killian funny, flirty, and patient as hell with our grumpy boy, he also has inner turmoil that he doesn’t let stop him from genuinely being a nice guy.

Maddox is our pretty boy grumpy nerd and he was definitely my favorite! He was sassy and direct and it was everything that Killian needed.

The two together balanced each other out perfectly, and I loved how Maddox came to the conclusion that he needed to open up more and lower his walls. I love how Killian gave him a safe space, and how Maddox defended Killian at every turn.

The plot was very low angst but these two were super swoon worthy with all their back and forth. Not too much spice but it wasn’t even needed honestly.

Just a lovely addition to the series, already my favorite, and I can’t wait to read the next book!

The author did a much better job of showing rather than telling compared to book one, although it definitely is still happening here.

Otherwise I loved this. So cute.

Professor Wheeler is probably my favorite character. He’s so unbothered by the garbage fire nonsense going on around him. He’s just trying to teach statistics to bored college students. And he’s an ally? What a king.

Anyway.

This is fine? Our boys are quite cute—despite the many horrors. The crushing fear of failure. Disappointing your dad. Problematic exes. The aforementioned statistics. So many horrors.

Does this ever really rise to the level of urgency that the author is clearly to convey? For me, not really. The stakes feel like they’re just there to provide a buffer between sex scenes.

Which, isn’t a criticism. It’s just an observation.

Writing—AND reading—queer hockey stories is a national pastime at this point.

Not every single one can be “Heated Rivalry”—and that’s okay. I read these stories BECAUSE everything is going to work out in the end and all problems will be fixed. It’s reassuring.

These are my safety blanket reads.

Anyway, anyway.

This is a fine series. It’s a good, contemporary queer sports romance to pass an afternoon with~

Ugh these two are absolutely the cutest! 🥹💙
Killian is such a freaking cutie, I can’t handle it! He’s obsessed with Maddox and I’m here for it. The way he just can’t look at anyone or anything else but Maddox melts my poor little heart, ugh! 🥹🥰💙

You want shy, grumpy nerd x sunshine jock? This book is absolutely it! 🤭🥰
Maddox is a nerd and also a TA. Killian is the typical jock who sleeps around. BUT, he has a massive crush on Maddox—who happens to be the TA in one of his class. 🤭🤭🤭

Kill tends to underestimate himself—thanks, shitty dad!—so when he struggles and needs a tutor for one of his classes and his professor gives him Maddox’s number, Killian is the happiest man alive. He’ll do anything to get Maddox to notice him. The only thing is… Maddox has already noticed him, but he has a strict “no jocks” rule. 😅

This book is absolutely amazing! The banter is on point—I highly recommend you give it a try! 🥰💙

Have I mentioned how much I love a man who yearns? Oh boy. Killian, the man that you are 🫠

We know both Maddox and Killian from book one of this series. So I would really recommend to read the first book beforehand, but technically, this one could also be read as a standalone.

I loved, looooved this book! The jock, who is known for having flings left and right, falls for the nerdy, shy guy with a troubled past? I'm sold.

Like the first part, this book also represented some amazing friendships, I enjoyed that so much for the MCS.

I devoured this book and couldn't stop thinking about the fondness of Maddox and Killian for quite some days after finishing it.

You should really grab this one 🥰

A funny and endearing slow-burn romance.

Killian is an absolute teddy bear! Maddox is no-nonsense upfront but secretly very romantic. The two of them are adorable, and the push-pull between them for the first part of the book was really entertaining.

They have their drama in the form of an overbearing parent and a high school bully, but they work together (even if reluctantly on Maddox’s side) to sort both problems out.

I much preferred this to the first book; it felt like the author had ironed out all the kinks, and the flow and pace of the story were much smoother and more enjoyable. It was great to check in with other characters too. I feel such empathy for Rhys worrying his time may be over and I can’t wait to see how he and Isaac develop!

I don’t actually have anything bad to say about this story. It’s a tried-and-tested plot line, but it’s very sweet, funny, and really enjoyable.

Whereas the first book was just endlessly mid, this one is so offensively bad it's made me question why a benevolent God would allow such a work to disgrace the face of the earth.

The writing was plain horrible.

The characters were even worse.

Maddox is conceited little twat who thinks his trauma and his insecurities give him license to treat people like shit. Killian somehow managed to read as both a total doormat and an annoying brat who can't seem to respect other people's boundaries.

These two had absolutely nothing in common except for the fact that they both have the decision-making capacity of a hungry twelve-year-old boy.

Literally, everything they said or did was either boring or mind-numbingly stupid.

And to make matters worse, they had no discernible emotional connection, or even the bare minimum of sexual chemistry.

I mean, what does it say about a romance that the villain is the only character whose story I actually wanted to read about?

I won't be sticking around for the rest of this series. There are too many good books to read out there and not enough time in a life.

I was really looking forward to this read, as I absolutely loved the first book in this series.
Although enjoyed this book, it fell a little flat for me. I loved Killian and Maddox. But I didn’t love the way Maddox treated Killian. Yes, I understand that he could be snarky at times- but I felt like sometimes Maddox bordered rude and toxic?
The third act breakup scene was just not it- and it made me not enjoy Maddox’s character. I wanted Maddox to grovel more! I wanted Maddox to give Killian flowers, woo him a little y’know.
Also my final thought- Ulrich. I did not like this plot line at all. The plot hole at the end had me confused. It felt so unnecessary. It seems like the author just wanted it done and over with at the end of the book. Like once he served his purpose he was just written off.
My final conclusion- I loved the first book, and this book was just okay! Would definitely give it a read!
I must say I’m really looking forward to the next book which I think is going to be Rhys and Issac.

killian & maddox - 4.25 stars 🩵 omg okay i looooved this book. i was really excited to get an arc of this cause i had read the previous book (caleb & nick’s story) and loved it and was so intrigued by poor killian trying to get maddox’s attention and everyone shutting it down LMAOO that man was down bad for maddox from the start. i so enjoyed these twos dynamic. maddox really couldn’t resist killian and neither could i like if an adorable, sexy man like that was pursuing me i would’ve folded too maddox dw. and plus these two lit up the sheets like lmfaooo. i was truly rooting for them the whole way i loved both of them and was waiting for them to get their hea. i understood why maddox kept the things he did from killian and why he was scared. it really was a leap of faith but he’s lucky he had that amazing man to fall back on. and killian was the best to maddox. man worshipped the ground he walked on. i’m def looking forward to more in this series and im guessing that isaac & rhys are next?? maybe? also not sure if ulrich is gonna get a redemption book or not.. the potential is there tho. all in all, loved it.

A sweet, swoony college romance between a golden retriever hockey player, and his hesitant TA/tutor.

Maddox has sworn off of dating jocks after a bad experience in high school. But the tall, handsome hockey player in the class he TAs for won’t stop staring at him. Tutoring Killian Schultz may be a bad idea, but Maddox can’t help himself. 🤭

This book has:
-student / TA
-besotted jock / hesitant nerd
-hockey college romance
-supportive boyfriends

Maddox and Killian are so sweet and so supportive of each other. Though they both have their own stuff to work through, they achieved their HEA successfully! This book really does feel like two young guys that are figuring themselves out as they navigate something new.

Definitely a great read for those who love a good college, hockey romance with wholesome characters.

This was such a sweet story—perfect if you’re looking for a cozy, feel-good read with very low angst. I also read book one, but I found book two had even more depth and charm, which made it feel extra special to me. I can honestly recommend this series with a full heart.

Killian and Maddox together? Absolutely adorable. On one side, we have the classic nerd (Madd), and on the other, the athlete who’s completely obsessed with him (Killian). These two are the perfect example of why I love the nerd × jock trope so much.

Maddox & Killian
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
🌶🌶🌶

Sweet & Spicy
Jock / Nerd
Tutor / Tutee
Hurt / Comfort
College Hockey
Protective hockey players

So this was just about the sweetest thing ever.

Kilian is the literal definition of Golden retriever.

Maddox had been wronged in the past, so he has become naturally protective of himself and sworn off jocks.

“Hey,” I breathe. “Can you stay longer, please?” “Why?” “Because you quiet down my thoughts.”

Killian just is all heart eyes anytime he sees Maddox, he thinks he is beautiful but not just that, he genuinely likes Maddox for who he is.

“You were jealous,” he sing- songs. “Maddox Roussel, you like me. You like like me. And you’re not afraid to show it.”

Maddow is hard to trust this at first, but once they starting their tutoring sessions he gets to see the real Killian

This was so sweet.

A great romantic rom-com style love story.

Two opposite people learning to trust each other and love.

“I love you,” I say simply, with no preamble. “I’m glad we ended up here.”

I adored this. Both this and the first book were wonderful

Wonderfully written

So thankful for this arc

It’s not a bad read, just super straightforward. Two people who’ve been secretly obsessed with each other for years finally grow a spine and ask each other out, and that’s basically the whole deal. The plot and characters feel pretty standard, like something you’ve probably seen in a bunch of other romances. If you just want something light, cute, and easy to breeze through, this will do the job.

This review is going to be all over the place but bear with me... this was weird.
Fair warning though: this is a longer review.

First, let's get these out of the way:

- There's lots of telling, not showing - just like the previous book. Most of the non-sexual intimate moments are glossed over and we're just told that they happened off page. I hate when romance authors do this, especially early in the relationship, because we don't get to see the characters making a real connection.

- There's incorrect use of some words that took me out of the story (but it wasn't too bad so I can forgive them). But it's still worth mentioning.

- The word "wheeze" needs to be taken out of this authors vocabulary please. Just say laughed ffs; it sounds like everyone has asthma.

- They're meant to be young adults in college but one of the MCs keeps a handkerchief - what even???? There were moments like this where I questioned the author's age. For another example there was dialogue where the MC says "You're a bully is what you are". Alright grandpa.

- I was so put off by everything else that I even skipped the sex scenes to avoid being with a couple I didn't believe in... and that's due to the story.

Because that was the biggest issue for me - the story.

So let's talk about it.

Firstly, Maddox is a prick. My earlier notes are just "Maddox is a judgmental fucking prick" over and over again. He's meant to be smart but jumps to dumb conclusions like his thesis depends on it. Where's your critical thinking oh smart one? If a character is said to be smart, MAKE THEM SMART ON THE PAGE. If they lack critical thinking skills then it doesn't matter how many times you tell me he studies, I WON'T BELIEVE THEY'RE SMART.

There were moments where I questioned if Maddox was neurodivergent and lacked social skills but that's not the case. He's just a dumbass. Characters jumping to conclusions is the most frustrating thing to read, especially nonsensical conclusions. Like seeing two people talking and thinking they must be flirting? Jealousy would be realistic in this scenario if they were in a relationship or getting close BUT THEY ARE NOT. Maddox comes off as a judgmental idiot and I hated him throughout the entire book.

Now. The story beats.
IT MAKES NO FUCKING SENSE.
The characters keep doing things that go against their development and the story moving forward.

*** SPOILERS ***

Maddox not telling Killian about the texts and calls from Victor made sense at first... but then he kept keeping it from him. WHY??
Oh wait, here we go. This is apparently why - he was afraid Killian would pity him.
What?
It's like their relationship isn't progressing as all. Killian is falling in love (for what reason - we will never be shown, only told in a paragraph eventually). Maddox is not shown to be falling in love at all. You're dating for a while and you think he'll pity you if you tell him your bully is contacting you again??? MAKE IT MAKE SENSE

Killian was also doing shit that went against character development and natural progression of plot.
You're telling me that this dude finds out that him interfering made his boyfriend's situation worse... SO HE DECIDES TO IMMEDIATELY DO IT AGAIN?? Excuse me?
"I'm dealing with Ulrich once and for all, even if Maddox asked me not to. I can't not."
YES KILLIAN. THE THING YOUR BOYFRIEND WAS SO ANGRY ABOUT?? YEAH GO DO THAT. AND THEN HIDE IT FROM HIM. GOOD CHOICE.
"I plan to deal with him myself, but I'm not going to tell Maddox that."
And he doesn't! He doesn't tell him. Maddox finds out accidentally at the end of the book and they all laugh it off.
SOUNDS LIKE A GREAT RELATIONSHIP BASED ON HONESTY GOOD JOB
If this were a mafia/dark book it might’ve made sense but this is supposed to be light and fluffy so wtf

We're meant to see characters learn and grow and make better choices. Not do the same shit over and over and somehow get different results. It's so confusing. Eventually Maddox's ~Big Change~ is him accepting when people stick up for him.
Saying thank you instead of sorry.
Right.

Except that doesn't really help because the truth is - these people stepping in DID make things worse for him.
So even if he said thank you instead of sorry, the problem should be getting worse for him. There's no reason why the bully would change his actions all of a sudden.

IT MAKES NO SENSE.

This character arc has no impact on this damn bully conflict.
BUT WAIT! DUE TO BAD NONSENSICAL WRITING, THE BULLY CONFLICT IS SOLVED IN THE END! Because *** SPOILER *** somehow the big bad bully decides to leave them alone after a pathetic stand-off where nothing actually happens - unless you count Killian breaking his windshield and then saying that Killian himself would pay for it. Somehow that works. This big bad bully who had been threatening violence whenever he sees Maddox and has had his life ruined decides to pussy out because of THAT.

NOTHING MAKES SENSE

The scene was meant to be the climax but felt so flat too.
Rhys telling Killian that he's said what he wanted to say and they should go.
What was said by Killian you ask? In this climactic stand-off?
"Continue to talk shit about my boyfriend, see what happens."
That's it.
Wow nice. You said a lot there bud. Came out with a bat and everything and that's all you had to say.

Also regarding Killian's big Confronting Victor scene - what the fuck?? If you have to confront the dude, why not do it privately? Go to his house? Why at a party and then BE SURPRISED WHEN YOU DRAW A CROWD??
"We're getting a goddamn audience. Incredible, I think dryly."
WHAT DID YOU THINK WAS GOING TO HAPPEN DIPSHIT. Earlier you were talking about how you're cool with "even making a show of it" SO WHY ARE YOU SURPRISED???
Fucking nonsense.

If Killian bumped into Victor at a party and anger took over, that would've made sense. But him telling Victor to come to the party and meet him just felt like the author wanted a cool "tell him to be there" moment even though it didn't suit the story.

THERE WERE SO MANY MOMENTS LIKE THIS TOWARDS THE END. Bits of writing that just didn't make sense and felt like the author thought it was cool to say.
Moments like when Killian was thinking how "he should have been there" and done something to stop things from the beginning when if he did that, it would have been weird and a crossing of boundaries because they weren't even friends then. It doesn't make sense for the story and characters. I feel like the whole "I should have been there" spiel was just something the author thought sounded badass from other books.

I need to take a break from Killian. Back to Maddox. Remember how I said he was a prick? Yeah he's that way til the end. Taking space from Killian but being a dick about it.
"He's been texting me constantly even if I barely reply."
Wow Maddox is such a likable character.

"I shouldn't be pushing him away, like he said, but... I need to get myself together."
Get yourself together how Maddox?
What are you actually talking about? Because in a few pages we're going to have some confusing reveals about why you're staying away, and it's not because you need to "get yourself together".
Caleb says that Maddox runs away to protect others. Okay. That doesn't make sense in the story. But okay.
Then in that same car ride Caleb says Maddox is pushing Killian away because the dude is protecting him.
Which one is it?
Oh wait no. In that same car ride Maddox says he feels guilty for everyone getting in trouble for him, and that he's scared of pulling Killian down with him. I suppose that's the correct answer? I don't even know anymore. So many moments of revelations that aren't actually revelations.

Now the whole "pulling Killian down with him" thing. What are you talking about Maddox? Because surely, a guy as smart as you can't be really worried about having the professor find out about your relationship when in the beginning of the book, the professor seemed open and accepting of the relationship. Right? The stakes weren't there because of the scene earlier in the book that made it obvious to the reader that it wasn't going to be a problem. But apparently it wasn't obvious to our resident genius over here.

Oh I almost forgot. Our resident genius? Apparently doesn't think to back up his work. His laptop getting smashed and he's all like "maybe I can salvage some of the storage". SO SMART. VERY PHD READY.

Oh another random tidbit but what was with everyone acting like Victor committed armed battery or something? All he did was smash a laptop and leave and we had Walters out here like "I didn't know Victor was capable of this." Lmaooooooo yeah he's a terrifying and evil man.

I'm ending this mess of a review coming back to the core of the story.
I don't think the characters developed enough. We ended with them both realising traits and habits that they need to change, but in a good story, this would have happened way earlier. We end with Killian still barely having a backbone to stand up to his father and Maddox just learning to say thank you and not sorry. Oh and standing up to the bully a little bit but not actually doing anything of consequence with that plot point. That's their big character growth.

I think this book is the perfect example of an author focussing largely on plot and exciting scenes, but then ignoring the characters and what they would organically do in the story. The lack of this insight made the plot frequently go back-and-forth, and not in a good way.

The author also needs to learn about telling vs showing in writing romances. Summaries vs scenes. If the readers are in a romance, they want to see the dialogue and connection between the characters, not to be told that the characters talked. Okay I'm done. I'm so done.
