Shmuel has always been my favorite book in Tanach, since learning it in 7th grade in Bais Yaakov.
I've reread it a few times since and chose to teach as much of it as I could to my Hebrew school students last year.
I reread the whole thing now (JPS version, English, no commentary for now for the purposes of time).
It's even more dramatic than I remembered.
It's beyond me to give it the review it deserves. All I can say is that it is a rich and complex view into several very complex men and occasionally some women.
There are so many moments of gripping pathos, of human relatable moments that still resonate despite the thousands of years that have passed.
Le plus ca change, le plus ca meme.
Shmuel holds a special place in my heart and I hope to do it justice in some way in creative works in the future.
