Have you ever wondered why 007 is James Bond's numerical designation? Or where the name Luke Skywalker comes from? How about all those giant faces that pass judgment on General Zod and his lieutenants at the beginning of 1978's Superman? What's behind the symbolism of all those mirrors in Black Swan? Cinema Symbolism: A Guide to Esoteric Imagery in Popular Movies answers these questions; it is about occult, numerological, astrological, mythological, alchemical, Tarot, and kabbalistic iconography and symbolism contained within popular movies. Films analyzed include The Exorcist, Back to the Future, Star Wars (Episodes I-VI), The Lord of the Rings, The Wizard of Oz, Black Swan, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, the James Bond movies, and The Matrix among many others.

I heard the author on a Coast to Coast replay one weekend and decided I had to buy this book. I need to confess I don't have a great track record with books I hear about on the radio and in pod casts, apparently my enthusiasm for the topic when presented on the radio overwhelms my general common sense. Don't get me wrong this is in no way a bad book; if you are into such things. I love Movies and am apparently easily influenced to think I like books that look for secrets in movies, but I really don't.
This book is absolutely chock full of source quotes. However these quotes relate to philosophy, which bores me to tears. I appreciate the thorough research but I don't need to read it. Because the books deals with many series films, Star Wars, the Matrix and Lord of the Rings there is a great deal of repetition of ideas.
If you are really into the hidden messages in movies this is a great book, but it is too dense for the average movie fan.
I heard the author on a podcast and some of the movie symbolism he spoke about was so interesting! Unfortunately, it didn't translate as well in written format. The chapter I found the most enlightening and engaging was the chapter on James Bond, a character I generally have little interest in and even less knowledge about. The cons: There seemed to be more typos than I'm used to in a published work and too many mentions of subjects that would be covered in the author's second book. The pros: I will definitely watch movies with a more keen eye!
I was fortunate enough to be able to interview Robert W. Sullivan about this publication. I found it fascinating because he pointed out somethings I had not considered before. I knew that "The Matrix" was dense with symbolism but did not delve into the deeper meaning of the book "Simulacra and Simulation" by Jean Baudrillard which is prominently shown in "The Matrix."
I did a side search on Jean Baudrillard's book to find the hidden meaning or why it so obviously placed in the movie. I won't spoil that for you but, mind blown! I also learned a great deal about Masonic and esoteric references of which I had no previous knowledge. The book made me think, and that is always time well spent.
