Don't bother with this novel - I was appalled to find out that book 2 hasn't been translated from French into English even though it was released in 2014. If I had realised this, I would NEVER have bothered with book 1. Argghhhh!
Librarian turned vampire assistant, Samantha Watkins’s, life has surely taken an unexpected turn.
Samantha gets caught up in a vampire attack and her savior just happens to have fangs himself, Phoenix.
Phoenix is part of a group of vampires that keeps other vampires from killing and keeping the vampire secret.
Since Samantha gets swept into this world of secrecy, her only choice is becoming Phoenix’s reluctant side kick in training or death. Faced with a foe imbedded deep in the vampire hierarchy, the stakes are high with the fate of the world and the secret of the vampires' existance balances on a razors edge.
The premise of this story was really great but I just feel something was lost in the translation keeping me from loving it. I say that because the narrative becomes stiff and impersonal at times when some of it is so utterly and completely enthralling. That leaves me to believe it was that transition into English that broke the marvelous rhythm of those scenes that just felt off and over the top. I kind of wished I was fluent in the original language this story was told, it just had that special spark that really caught me.
For the story itself, it was well conceived with wonderful world building.
I received this ARC copy of Samantha Watkins: Chronicles of an Extraordinary Ordinary Life from AmazonCrossing in exchange for a honest review. This book is set for publication Feb. 23, 2016.
„My name is Samantha Watkins...I'm a librarian at Griffith High School. .........Who are you, dammit?“ „I am a vampire.“
SAMANTHA
„I have been a vampire since the age of thirty.“ „How long ago was that?“ „Five hundred years, give or take...“
PHOENIX aka VELVET VOICE[image error]
I love Samantha very much and particular I love her inner monologs.
„If I had ever dreamed of a man lying on top of me and murmuring things in my ear, it was surely never this.“
Many of you will say: “In reality she wouldn’t accept that so well; in real life she couldn’t go from shy librarian to kick-ass vampire assistant in 8 weeks; in reality…..”
Well, let me tell you something…
Shocking, I know. Sorry, I must be the one to burst your bubble.
For you who still want to live in Lalaland, let's just say, if they are real then they definitely not like Phenix said: “…a group of big-hearted vegetarian vampires, shining like a diamonds in the sunlight. That does not resemble us at all.”
He is awesome. Sexy, dangerous gentlemen… Ahhhh
There are no sex, heck, there no romance at all (almost).
He didi give Her orgasm, in front of his best friend, former musketeer slash vampire. But that was accidental…., orgasm I mean. (Your have to see at for you self.)
He didn’t mind…Friend, I mean.
In presence of somebody who look like this (I wouldn't either…blush, blush, blush)
They never said what they feel for each other but, women must know that men feel something for her after this…
“That is for daring to kiss her! Phoenix shouted, holding up his enemy's bloody tongue. This is for daring to touch her! He tore off Huan's left arm…”
I know because there is the second book there is a cliffhanger and there is unsolved meter between them but …I don’t like that, and I don’t like the fact that if She didn’t catch him He would do THAT.
Because of that end…

I am not one to read about Vampires because I think the whole Fantasy is really silly because everyone is so amazingly beautiful. However I thought I would take a chance on Aurelie Venem because it sounded interesting. I love this book!! This vampire book Samantha Watkins had me laughing from beginning to end not to mention the fact I found myself emotional invested in Samantha and everything about her. Aurelie Venem created characters that will draw readers in until they are unable to think of anything else but Samantha and her amazing abilities to have you laughing.
The book has a wonderful blend of colorful characters who will capture the readers heart strings. The action is painted in such a way the reader will feel as if they are watching a movie. The dialogue moves quickly and the reader is never left scratching there head unless Samantha is.
I have only read one Vampire series and it was Anne Rice who created a world of fantasy and romance. Aurelie Venem Creates that same world but use humor to have the readers fall in love. With this book being translated from French to English I found something things funny and had to reread some part but I was simple amazed how easy everything flowed page after page until I was dying for more. The way the characters spoke mainly Samantha was a little too proper for me but knowing this book was translated from French to English it made a lot of since. I have read other book translated from Spanish to English and found it difficult but this translator did an amazing job bring this story to life in English. I can't wait to read book 2 and 3 when they arrive and I will recommended this book to everyone I know. ARC Netgalley For a Vampire book there was hardly any sexual reference and zero sex scenes.
Librarian Samantha Watkins is "saved" from her boring life by vampire Phoenix. Normally, humans that discover the secret of vampires are killed immediately, but he has need of a new assistant and gives Samantha the choice of filling the role or dying. During her training, she transforms from a character full of self-doubt and pity to a sassy and confident fighter. Phoenix is like a vampire police detective and his current case is tracking down who is responsible for a rash of human kidnappings.
I was out of audios for the month and picked this up not really knowing what to expect. It was great! I really liked both Samantha and Phoenix's characters and how they interacted with one another. The case that they were trying to solve was action-packed. There were so many times that I thought, "oh, this must be the end of the book", only to have the plot continue and another level of intrigue added. Oh, and the ending still made me crazy for more of these characters. My only regret is that I didn't pay attention that this book is a translated version and the other 3 books in the series have not been converted to English yet. Unfortunately, I don't speak French, so I am forced to wait until that occurs. I'll definitely be keeping my eye out as this was a great introduction to the series.
Well, that was interesting. I'm not sure how much of the story being a bit off was due to translation or being true to the story that had been written.
An interesting start to a PNR but the ending made me roll my eyes too much. A literal cliffhanger. =P
This was a absolutey amazing book!! It did start off a little slow but I am glad it did when reading further there was so much depth and background that you got to understand all the characters real well. I think this was a great new storyline paranormal romance. This author is one to look for. Bad side it I thought there were more books to read only to realize there are additional books but they were all originally wrote in French. Please complete the rest of the series in English I know more people would love to read her books in America if they were translated to English and whoever helped translate and print out the English version did a wonderful job. I will gladly wait for the other books to be translated as it's almost just like waiting for the next book in the series to come out!! I just hope they come out soon.
This book is hands down, one of the best books I've ever read. Which is saying A LOT! It had me captivated from the very beginning to the very last page. I'm sad that it's over and that the second book (the English version) isn't available yet.
Ending was very fast, didn't expect it. I couldn't stop reading this book even though I'm very stressed out right now with other things now. I have found this book a good distraction from my problems.
This book was great but I think it needs a new title. Even though we see the story mostly through Sam’s eyes, it is more a study of the who of Phoenix. Who is he? What is he? How has he lived so long? Why is he so standoffish?
This book reminded me of so many of my favorite vampire shows: Forever Knight and True Blood, plus the mentioning of other series like Stargate SG-1 wanted me to see if this author was taking friend requests because we thought along the same lines. Same interests.
I thought this book was amazing. It really gave me all the feels and I was engaged throughout the entire book. There were only a few of the townspeople who grabbed my interest: Angela and Danny but others seemed to melt into the background.
The thing that I was captivated by was Phoenix himself and the unusual way he responded to things. The abrupt way he was with Sam had me scratching my head but at the same time wanting to know more about him. That last scene of the book where the climax has happened and Sam is bringing Phoenix his phone stabbed me in the heart.
I got a brief glimpse into book two at the end but I see the next three books in the series have not yet been translated into English. I really need to read books 2-4. I wonder how long it would take me to learn French?
Awesome book. Worthy of a television series. Highly recommended.
I received this as an ARC (Advanced Reader Copy) in return for an honest review. I thank NetGalley, the publisher and the author for allowing me to read this title.
It was a fast-paced read which I thoroughly enjoyed. One night I woke about 1am and just had to pick it up and read some more! I finally put it down at 4am!
But why do I say don't bother reading this book?
Because, despite the fact that book 2 (of 5) was released 2014 (French version), the English translated version has never appeared.
I was so disappointed to find out that I could not continue reading the story of Samantha Watkins (unless I learned to read French of course!).
I even messaged the author Page on Facebook. I received a reply saying that Amazon had decided not to continue translating the series. Such a shame!
There, I said it. The best book I've ever read that I would NOT recommend you read!
Good book. I agree with other reviewers who are anxiously awaiting the translation of the rest of the series. Seriously contemplating how to get the next one and use Google Translate. . .
Samantha Watkins, Chronicles of an Extraordinary Ordinary Life, Aurélie Venem
Review from Jeannie Zelos book reviews
Genre: Sci-fi & fantasy
I really wasn’t sure about this book, it sounded one I’d like, but a new to me author and one where I couldn’t find much info about the story. Goodreads – my usual source had only a couple of English reviews and a few foreign ones ( Google translate gave me a rough, very rough idea of what they were) and I decided as its a lovely long read, and there are so few of them that I’d give it a whirl...
I’m so glad I did, the length allowed me to really get to know Samantha and Phoenix before plunging into the drama. I really enjoyed the way she transformed and grew in confidence with Phoenix’ help, and I loved his arrogant and sometimes cold conversations. It becomes clear as we go on that not only Sam is changing, that Phoenix is opening out, and when his long time friends visit that's even more obvious. Of course over time Sam has fallen for him, though she’s never had a relationship and kids herself this is nothing more than friendship. I felt Phoenix too was attracted, but they both steer firmly away from any recognition of it.
There's the big event, the main plot, where Phoenix, as the first line of local Vampire Law policing, gets given the task of finding out who is behind the recent kidnappings of so many locals. The main task of those who uphold Vampire Law is to protect them from being outed, to keep the Secret of vampires from humans. Punishment is execution, of both the vampires and those they’ve told, though as with Sam there are a few exceptions. Phoenix and the two vampires above him who run this area risk execution if they can’t track down the perpetrators soon. Where the first half seems to be letting us get to know the world of the vampires and how they work, and see Sam fitting in, and letting us get to know the main characters, the second half steps up the pace, with fights and dangers happening constantly. In the pursuit of the truth poor Sam comes very close to being killed, and Phoenix seems to have more than a little care about this, though he passes it off casually as friendship even though his stance on humans as inferior is well known. He’s been a loner for centuries with only a couple of vampire friends he sees every few decades so his regarding Sam that way is a huge step.
Its a great read, one I really enjoyed though was cautious of, not least as I’ve struggled to connect with a couple of past translated novels. This though is perfect, one or two odd phrases, but no more, and the translator did a fantastic job. If I hadn’t read that it was originally written in another language I’d have no idea. Its written better than many English originals.... I’d be moaning here about that cliff-hanger, what a shock, from not just one point but two huge incidents. I never expected those! Thankfully though the author has given us the start of book two that at least gives us an idea of how things work out :-) I really wish book two ( and three and four) were out now.
Its a different pace to so many current Paranormal/fantasy reads and that worked really well for me. Some of them are beginning to feel almost formulaic so its been a treat to read something that's formatted so differently, that gives us the time to really get to know the characters and the plots. Sometimes at the end of a novel I’m still a bit unsure of who and why and what, especially when so many re less that 250 pages, but this is over 400 and that extra length is well worth it and a treat for quick readers like me, allowing us to spend hours engrossed in the world created.
Stars: Five, a book that really lets the reader get to know the story in depth
I read this story because it was a concept I'd never come across in years of reading urban fantasy, and trust me, that's not an easy accomplishment for an author (it's a HUGE genre). Samantha experiences tremendous growth as a character during this story, and I loved reading about her transformation from meek high school librarian to tough vampire/"angel" assistant. The only meager complaint (and it's not really a "complaint" so much as a minor issue) is that I feel like some of the dialogue was lost in translation a bit. If I'd read it in the original French, I think this would be a moot point.
Long-story-short, I really liked the story, and plan to read the next book in the series the second the translation is available!
I received an ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
I had a really hard time getting into this book. The story dragged a lot. I felt like the book went in circles, but never had a point made.
I got over halfway through though this book when I finally gave up. Sadly this book had good editing, but just not a very engaging story for me. You get to the where some happens, but then it just goes back to the same old routine every day in the book. This book was very repetitive, so I started to wonder if anything would ever really happen in the book. There just wasn't enough action in the book. I don't usually find books boring, but I have been trying to read the book for over a year, and it just doesn't pull my interest.
Another female meets vampire story. Except, the female is in her late twenties instead of a teenager and the book was first published in French. The second and third of this series are available only in french as of this date, but I would imagine the others will be translated into English eventually. I noticed an annoyingly frequent usage of the word "suddenly." I found the story enjoyable enough that I would read the translated version of book 2.
Perfectly executed from start to finish. The well developed characters had me feel every emotion right along with them. The story kept my full attention to the very last page. I wanted more right away and was very disappointed when I realized that the next book was not available yet! I'll just have to be patient to find out what the future holds for Samantha, Phoenix and their trusted friends. Please don't let the wait be too long....
I absolutely loved this book the concept of is great no sex at every turn of the page and several times the things Sam did and i was laughing so hard and it made it like Sam is real When are the next in series to be translated tried to get the second but don’t read French
Happy book birthday, Samantha Watkins! This was a solid 3.5. Unique premise, good world building, great character development for the heroine. The hero? He's still a bit of a question mark. Full review on the Knockin' Books blog: http://www.knockinbooks.com/reviews/s....
I been waiting for the second English installment of this series. And I want to know what happens after. This book got me hooked and I can't wait. When is the English version coming. Please I'm dying to know and its been years.
4.5 loved it. I was hanging on from beginning to end. Unfortunately, after looking for the other books, I learned they have not been translated from French to English so I'm annoyed.
I actually purchased “Samantha Watkins” a month ago but never sat down to read it. What a mistake because once I got started on my reading journey I couldn’t put it down. I have to admit that part of my hesitation was because I thought how could a book about a librarian be that interesting? However, I was wrong.
Samantha Watkins was a victim like so many us in high school of the mean girls. Instead of getting over it and finding her voice, she turned into a loner and ended up being the librarian at the very high school she had attended. After working late one night she was attacked by vampires but saved by another one.
When Samantha awakens at the home of her rescuer he explains that life as she once knew it was now over. She would be given a new identity and would be working as his personal assistant. What does that entail? She will be helping him track down the vamps who were responsible for so many human disappearances.
As Sam tries to grow accustom to her new boss and her new role, she is introduced to more of the vampire world than is safe. Soon she becomes at risk to new threats and if she cannot find a way to help her boss with this case both she and he might not survive.
There is plenty of action, subterfuge, and sexual tension in this little gem and I believe that this series could quickly become one of my favorites. I hope the translation of book two is coming soon because that cliffhanger ending left me wanting more!
