Calming the Enforcer

Rate this book
Book 4 - The Cloverleah Pack Series
Can be read as a stand-alone

Troy Peterson has been waiting three long months for his true mate to return from his deployment in the US Army. But when Anton doesn’t turn up as planned, Troy starts to second guess everything he knows about his mate - and that's before he has even met him.

Anton Sage fully intended on meeting Troy, the moment his ninety days service was up. But the Army had different ideas and now Anton is sitting in his wolf form, in a cage, wondering if he will ever get the chance to meet the man Fate intended for him.

Even after they meet, things do not go well. Between the Army, the mysterious Kylan, another wolf with the hots for Troy, an overbearing friend, and some old fashioned misunderstandings, Troy and Anton might never have the happily ever after they had dreamed of. Sometimes the mating gift can prove to be a curse.

Warning: This book is about two male wolf shifters. It includes fated mates, graphic gay sex, and references to BDSM, PTSD and cutting. Some foul language and violence.

I love Lisa Oliver's books, but this was not a favorite. All the components that make a book successful are here: fast pace, suspense, likable MCs, steam. What really got to me this time was the fact that lack of communication and misunderstandings between mates were used to enhance the plot and created unnecessary drama. Recently I started really disliking this way of plot twisting, so there. Otherwise, this was a good book.

Had to look up what "boffin" was. I find the british terms/slang strange for a story set in USA. The use of terms like HEA isn't common (to me anyway), and wasn't appreciated when it wasn't part of a character's speech and I couldn't dismiss it as slang I didn't know but could guess at.

It's now book four and I still have the same comments as the first few books: an editor is needed. Even someone who knows their grammar would be appreciated; the most glaring grammatical thing that always pops up for me is the lack of commas before the name of the person addressed. The current length of the books also isn't necessary, and an editor would probably cut down the word count.

I've been reading these books despite how lacking the editing is because I enjoy the characters and I heavily ignore/skim the parts that I do not feel are important or bore me. I'm still going to read the fifth book, but I just wish a second edition of the series is available. This could be a good series, but the length and editing issues makes it hard to recommend.

Book 4. Anton and Troy's story. Anton is a Special Ops, before his deployment he smells Troy, and send s a message asking him to wait that they are mates, with contact details. Anton announced to the General he was leaving, and this wasn't what the general wanted to hear. He has word sent to Troy that Anton has died, but Troy being a shifter knows that No Anton is not dead. This is the story of them finding each other and working out adjusts to their lives. Entertaining and Enjoyable.

I thought each of the previous books showed improvement. I enjoyed the really "over the top" plots of the 1st two despite the atrocious editing and multiple other issues. The 3rd story was not to my taste, and I found it boring; but the writing and editing seemed better. For me, this one went backwards in every sense. I was thrown out more times than I could count due to typos and editing. Some were piddling like know for now, but they build up. Others were confusing like when it was stated that Miles would just keep answering questions, but all be was doing was asking them. I had to stop reread multiple times to make sure I hadn't missed something.

There were so many plot holes that could have at least been addressed, including one at 13% that seriously had me thinking WTF. Really? An all powerful magic man and shifters can't find a man's scent even when they stay the night with his pack? Lots of parts felt like filler and contrived. Way too much time spent not trusting the mate bond like the previous book for Troy's twin, but it happened twice in this one with great detail. The action was practically ignored with one of the most anti climatic rising actions and "climaxes" I've ever experienced. Everyone goes missing. No real explanation to how they were taken & then is all over in like a page once they mount the rescue. I felt almost cheated. I love the characters. The world is interesting, but I feel this author is having to churn books out too quickly to do the stories any justice.

So while I thought this book was a really good addition to this series I am on the fence on what I feel about Anton's character.
Troy is Scott's twin brother and in Kane's pack. He has known about his mate Anton for awhile but Anton has been away because he was on a mission with special ops through the military.
Now when they finally get to meet one on one when Troy finds him after the military takes Anton there are instant sparks between these two.
I don't really know why but I have to be honest and say I was not a big fan of Anton's character like I was with the rest of the shifter characters from the previous books. For some reason his attitude just did not click with me and I did not get a lot of caring concern for Troy like the other shifters have had towards their mates. But I did really like Troy's character and the rest of this book I am still just undecided on how I feel about Anton and if I felt like they made a good mated couple.

So all together I really like this book I am still just a little undecided on how I feel about Anton and Troy together.
I received this book free in exchange for an honest review from Inked Rainbow Reads.

First, I did enjoy this book. As with the others, it is a quick, easy read. I've been waiting a while now for Troy and his mate's book and was excited to read it. I did have some problems though with this story. The beginning started off strong. Troy's mate (Anton) goes missing. The military reports him dead, but Troy knows that is alive. He and his pack go in to save Anton.

I really liked this part of the story. It was exciting and interesting. You have the bad General and his cronies. Then all of a sudden that fades away (rather anticlimactically) and now the story is about the struggles Troy and Anton have connecting as mates. It's almost the same story as Scott's. Very disappointing. Don't get me wrong, the book and some good twists to it and ends with the pack facing a serious threat, but I think it could have been soo much better.

Will I read the next book in the series.....yes!

I absolutely hate giving bad reviews, especially when I love the author's work and is a great author but I also know that this book was written during a hard time in the author's life and as such I want to commend her for being able to write a love story during such a time, as not many would be able to.

Wasn't bad but definitely wasnt her best work, I liked the premise but so much had been missing from Troy and Anton's story that it felt incomplete. I loved Troy and Anton themselves though such great characters.

I would actually like to see this book rewritten as it has such great promise but as it stands it was a decent book and again I have to commend her for being able to write it in such a hard time for her, and as such I give her three stars for her ability to write under bad circumstances and for such a great premise.

Calming The Enforcer
By Lisa Oliver

When Anton smells his fated mate on another man's clothing he's thrilled, but he just agreed to go on a mission. He sends a letter to his fated telling him he'll come see him when he gets back and he tells the Army he's retiring and this is his last mission.

When Anton's letters stop and Troy doesn't hear any more from him all sorts of negative things start going through his head.

I loved both Anton and Troy separately and as a couple. The angst is low. The book is written in both Troy and Anton's POV. Though mostly Troy's. There is a lot of action.

*sigh* I’d been looking forward to this book since the first book in the series. It sounded so romantic in theory two shifters knowing they’re mates and separated longing for each other. I’d imagined a bit at the beginning about when Anton discovered the scent of his mate and pined over him throughout his military missions. All of that was alluded to eventually at some point but everything mostly concentrated on Troy’s feelings. Which may have worked if it was in first person I suppose but with the way it was written I just couldn’t feel any attachment to Anton. Sure I can empathize with him and his struggles with PTSD and how it affected his relationship with Troy but there seriously was no romance in this book. Sex is not romance especially when the fated mate thing makes them want it constantly regardless of what else is going on in their lives at that moment.

As with his twin in the previous book, Troy could have solved all of their problems by just talking or opening the damned mind link. While I understand this is all happening for the book’s sake to make things I interesting or whatever it just annoys me. I hate angst. It’s why I quit reading YA books. The first two books in the series were so promising. They faced their problems together and were romantic and sweet with each other. It’s almost like the author couldn’t think of anything else to write to make things interesting and so just made the couples struggle with each other.

Dean’s book is next. I adore Dean. If his fated mate treats him like shit I’m done with this series.

Good addition to great series

Troy gets the scent of his mate from a piece of paper. Anton scented Troy on a hunter in Tulsa but was getting ready to ship out (he is a special ops soldier in the army) and sends a note to Troy asking him to wait for him until his return in three months. They briefly connect by computer a few times and Anton promises he will be there at the end of the three months and then nothing. Anton is missing and then two army officers meet with Troy to tell him his husband Anton is dead and give him paperwork to get his pension and life insurance payouts. Troy insists that Anton is not dead and sets out to prove it. Anton is being kept in a cage by a General who doesn't want to lose Anton as his special weapon. It is pack vs, U.S. Army with lots of danger, capture, betrayal and violence. The pack wins but things don't go well with Troy and Anton. Anton has lost contact with his wolf, suffers from PTSD and just doesn't know how to communicate with Troy who leaves him and prepares to die of the separation. We get a hard fought HEA for Troy and Anton but the pack is facing unknown danger from the wolf that betrayed the pack to the army. So we have to continue on with this wonderful series.

This is another good-but-not-great novel in the Cloverleah Pack series. It contains the same types of technical flaws as the first three volumes. Most notably, all of the American characters use the British English instead of the American dialect. The author clearly has done little or no research about the US. For example, she has the American military using A4 paper, when it actually uses the North American sizes known as "letter" or "legal". There are too many grammatical errors and too many misused words.

Technical flaws aside, there are fun characters and the story is interesting. Troy's fated mate, Anton, is declared dead by the US Army (he's in the Special Forces), but Troy knows he is still alive because of their fated-mate magical connection. So, it is left to the Coverleah Pack to find Anton. When they finally do meet (they had previously known each other only email, Skype, and a piece of paper with Anton's scent) they struggle very hard to get along with each other. The novel ends with a cliffhanger.

I wasn’t too fond of the plot. To many strings and to much dithering back and forth.

Bad editing... if you can’t look past that this is not a book for you.

I enjoyed the book even if I sometimes got annoyed because the bad editing. It was light and entertaining read when I got past that issue.
I really like the characters in this series. I liked revisiting Cloverleah. This was Troy’s and Anton’s story. Troy turned out to be an even bigger drama queen than Scott. How was that even possible? And Anton was an ass for most of the book.

Still, looking forward to Dean’s story.

I think it was Scott who said it in the last book, can't anyone get a mating without problems on top of problems. And while there's a whole new set of problems Troy follows his twin brothers footsteps with a mate that's not emotionally savvy and ends up running from him. And Anton is a bit like Damien and unintentionally hurts his mate and they have some communication difficulties at first. But like all matings the fates have the right mate picked out and they get there eventually.

I really hope that Dean gets a really great mate without to much heartache.

Great Addition

This was another great addition to this series. It was interesting to see Troy with his mate, and to see how even though he and Scott were twins, how different they reacted with their mating issues . Poor Anton had so much to learn about being mate along with all his other mental and emotional issues too. But I loved how Damien stepped in to help and guide Anton. A truly good read.

Calming the Enforcer

This is book 4 of the series and I’m happy to read that there doesn’t seem to be any repetition in storylines from other books of Lisa Oliver, like a lot of other authors I’ve read. Lisa handles the situation of writing about PTSD well, mixed in with the loss of wolf due to not being able to shift while on missions for the army this means Anton struggles to understand and show actual love and affection to his mate, causing no end of trouble.

Excellent Story

This series just keeps on getting better and better. Troy and Anton were a delight to read about. Anton’s character in particular was wonderful to watch develop from an unemotional professional soldier into someone who could freely express his emotions to his mate. The storyline arc is gripping. It is well paced and developing into a real nail biter which each book. I can’t wait to read the next one.

Troy and Anton's story is unique as they become aware of each other from a distance. The only thing that has alerted Troy of his mate is Anton's scent on a note. Anton was supposed to arrive weeks ago and now Troy is told he is dead. It's up to Troy and the pack to find the truth and dispel the forces that could reveal shifters to the world. A thrilling continuation of the Cloverleah Pack series. The pack is growing and its strength is what is attracting the attention of dark forces.

Meh. The story starts off good but then once Anton gets saved the story goes downhill. Honesty it became a bit boring for me. There seemed to be a lot of just "saying" the story rather than "doing". I also don't care that much for the trope that was causing the trouble. It just didn't work for me. I am hoping this is a one off and I will like the next book more.

While Troy is fretting over Anton not coming home to him, he faces two military men telling him Anton is dead. Troy knows Anton is still alive so they put together a plan to search and rescue him at an Army facility. Suspenseful with a traitor causing the Pack major problems adds excitement to this read.

The next book in the Cloverleah series explores what happens when humans get wind of the shifter world... as we can expect nothing good ever comes from humans.

Fast paced and an easy read with some good action. Typical Cloverleah book.

Whilst I did enjoy this, I didn't like it quite as much as prior stories, but there's still a heap of action that keeps it moving so I was happy. My main issue was the lack of communication between MCs Troy and Anton annoying...

Narrated by John York. 4 stars.
